Police station just down the road is under staffed, because of the general state of affairs in South Africa and don’t send out any officers to assist in securing a safe parameter. Christmas holidays have more then usual amount of people at home in the suburb and on the streets in general, combined with people ignoring others telling them to get back, with the desire to capture everything on their phones to share on social media. All equals absolute disaster. Prayers to all involved, so sad.

There was enough time for everyone to clear the area. As soon as a leak was detected everyone was supposed to have been warned to get away and stay clear. Once the fire broke out, people should have been at a safe distance already, but if they weren't, they were supposed ensure there was safe distance (gas tanker plus fire = obvious disaster to strike!)
When emergency personnel say "get back", get back. If you still want to gawk at an accident after being told to get back, then I guess you get what's coming to you, right? Lapse of judgment and concentration of the driver not checking or noticing the height restrictions on the bridge probably taken off route by the GPS and not familiar with the area. thats why its called an accident. It wasn't deliberate. That's what insurance is for. The company is hardly to blame unless it turns out they gave him the wrong route to follow.

The driver took the route, there were no signs on the bridge (evident from videos) but regardless, he got stuck, did what he had to do to secure the area (although another driver refused and tried to drive through and then his car switched off) The driver reported to the police etc. Alas, it was bound to explode. Reminds me of an incident during the summer holidays in the Netherlands when the Spanish truck driver transporting petrol left the road went down an embankment into a camping site where families in summer wear were sunning & cooking meals. The truck overturned caught fire & exploded setting of a series of gas containers exploding killing countless amounts of families in the process.
Google maps is also to blame if he was using it. I have been given stupid alternatives off routes by Google maps that I ignored because I knew I had to stay on the highway!!!

Recovering from burns takes months to years. And how well that goes in the end depends a lot on the initial treatment. So what is this company doing to ensure that the victims receive the treatment they need till they have finally completed their investigation? Why was it more important to send specialist investigators (which the police correctly told to back off to maintain integrity of evidence), rather than ambulances? Why are they not at the very least offering private hospital care for victims in equipped burn units and why are they not paying for alternative accomodation for the people who have been displaced? Why is all of this left up to an already over-stretched government?
Gift of the Givers within an hour or two already stepped up to bat on behalf of the missing government to get all the available resources for treating burn victims.
All low bridges should have a "clatterboard" hanging at bridge clearance height 10 m before it to wake up the driver. if you hit the board, you will hit the bridge. we had them in Muizenberg.

The bridge is so low and the road is not used and normally used by small cars when they take short cut to the hospital, this is one of those old roads which were active before 1994 , with his experience he must have seen that it was not going pass even the small 8 ton truck can’t pass there.

What if load-shedding caused a traffic jam, causing the Truck's GPS to re-route. And then the driver found himself in total unfamiliar territory. Then the first cause was Eskom.

At fault - municipality for not having clear signage and bridge thingies that you hit when too low? Not sure what they are called. Low tech solution. All low bridges should have a "clatter-board" hanging at safe bridge clearance height 10m before the bridge to wake up the driver. Hit the board, you will hit the bridge. Recovering from burns takes months to years. And how well that goes in the end depends a lot on the initial treatment. So what is this company doing to ensure that the victims receive the treatment they need till they have finally completed their investigation? Why was it more important to send specialist investigators (which the police correctly told to back off to maintain integrity of evidence), rather than ambulances? Why are they not at the very least offering private hospital care for victims in equipped burn units and why are they not paying for alternative accomodation for the people who have been displaced? Why is all of this left up to an already over-stretched government?
Gift of the Givers within an hour or two already stepped up to bat on behalf of the missing government to get all the available resources for treating burn victims.
It was an accident. How he ended up there is anyone's guess. If following GPS it does not take into account the size of the vehicle.

All low bridges should have a "clatterboard" hanging at bridge clearance height 10 m before it to wake up the driver. if you hit the board, you will hit the bridge. we had them in Muizenberg.

Fire fighters were on the ground.The driver did the best he could...just some incidents are beyond his control.... waiting to hear from his side n after the investigations...prayers to the families involved...you can't imagine,you woke up to go for work,school n other programs of the day ..and you end up blowing up.Jesus help us

The bridge is so low and the road is not used and normally used by small cars when they take short cut to the hospital, this is one of those old roads which were active before 1994 , with his experience he must have seen that it was not going pass even the small 8 ton truck can’t pass there.

People underestimate that bridge , especially after rain
As much as everyone wants to blame the company and driver. Truth be told no sign had been in place that road was not limited to light moto vehicles but trucks also. It's also very evident that the fire department had completely failed at any safty protocols limited rage to fight a lp fire is 500 meters safe zone for public is 1 km it was clear that the fire department did not know that very unprofessional they also dump water all over the place that had probably caused the blast.

At fault - municipality for not having clear signage and bridge thingies that you hit when too low? Not sure what they are called. One should note that many of the bridge restriction signs have been removed or fallen apart in the last 28 years . The other thing is , if this is sat nav related , many low bridge accidents are caused worldwide because of the lack of perameters needed for this communication system we rely on , they dont take into account low bridges , large or heavy vehicle usage ect , sat nav works on the ideal that everyone drives a small hatchback and any road is paved if not updated to a unpaved road , in America , semi articulated trucks are directed down farm paths because sat nav calls it a major road , sat nav peramiters need to be drastically upgraded worldwide , let the world wake up and fix this glitch . Remember , sat nav was an evolution of what became air to land radar during world war 2 , the early system could pick up individual buildings with relative accuracy , the tech is there but its easy to be lazy with nav , cut out what you dont think is important and to hell with everyone else , sat nav needs to be redeveloped without corner cutting .

Low tech solution. All low bridges should have a "clatter-board" hanging at safe bridge clearance height 10m before the bridge to wake up the driver. Hit the board, you will hit the bridge. In this case, the board should be at the last place the driver can escape if he is too high. We have this in Muizenberg.
