But equally, i'll never understand people that glamorise miliatry enlistment - the guys had no choice at all, even if they end up enjoying their time and making good memories. My country also has mandatory enlistment and it's literally a prison sentence, because for 2 (or more) years you're under direct supervision and commands of others. We have to put our lives on pause for this shit.
I know that this will most likely be an unpopular opinion, but...I actually think their military time was good for the members. I think it gave them an opportunity to extend themselves beyond their comfort zones and to see that their capabilities reached far beyond just music and entertainment. I've felt that the few years prior to entering the military, the members had lost some of their closeness due to such differing schedules and projects, and this gave them a chance to discover just how Precious being a BTS member has been. I understand how difficult this has been for ARMY, but I truly believe it came at the right time and was beneficial to each member. 💜💜💜
In a way, I agree, but nothing can make up for the amount of stress they felt before the deployment. They had no idea if Army would still be there when they came back not because they doubted army, but because nothing like this had ever happened before where such a big group had to take a break right at their peak. Maybe Elvis back in the day when he had to go to the army, but that was in the US and the K-pop industry is much more fickle than the pop industry was back then. The uncertainty of having to go away for 18 months and not knowing if when you came back, you’d still be able to do what you love is heartbreaking. I think we’ll see part of that in rm’s doc.
I agree with you. I'm trying to see positive things about the enlistment. A structured environment, tasks with a purpose, learn new skills, meet new people, pride in their service. And as you said, the chance to push themselves individually in their artistic endeavors. We are the benefiaries of brilliant new music and videos and they will come back to us healthy and happy!!! I understand the sentiment but I think they could've had all of that without being forced to fight in a war, without being turned into the face of political discourse of South Korean laws, without having to stay away from ARMY for 18 months. I think, like everything in life, there are positives and negatives, but IMO the negatives FAR outweigh the positives, and I don't think any of them would willingly enlist in the military if they weren't forced to, if korea was united and there was no need for it, I doubt they would ever chose that for themselves. I don't think most ppl understand just how brutal war is. Training for war is. Soldiers can get PTSD from just going through the first weeks of basic training.

Jurnalist. V is actually one of the members who was looking forward to joining the special duty team. He spoke about it when producer na and park seo joon surprised him for his birthday just before he was enlisting (they did a RUclips video of the surprise birthday if you want to check it out). From what we’ve seen of him, he’s enjoying himself. I do think they were sad in that this is the first time they are not together for that long but in the last vlive v did say that being away from each other will show how much they all mean to each other.

But from all the times since he has been saying he was excited to join and one thing about V is that he stays true to himself and tells you what he thinks. I do think that they would be concerned about being used as political pawns while serving for sure. They just wanted us to trust them, and we do. I remember I was a mess thinking they were unhappy with everything. But they were actually afraid of how ARMY would take the news about them doing solo activities. It's true that military service sucks, but they wanted the solo era. They needed the break and time for themselves. They ran for 10 years without a proper break. Just look at how different their music is from each other; they really needed it. It is not your fault that US schools teach a very patriotic US centric history of the 2nd World War. You need to check out some key facts. Every single decent special forces in the world is based on the British Special Forces. Check out Navy Seals fan boying over our special forces. Secondly Britain fought on for over a year blockaded by german subs torpedoing supply ships from our commonwealth countrys for over a year after Europe had fallen. Before the US sauntered in right at the end bringing materials and resources we had long used up. The equipement we used we had to pay for. Thats why rationing continued long after the war was over. London was bombed relentlessly, at one point for 11 days straight. Bombs that exploded, bombs that errupted in shrapnel, bombs that set everything and everbody on fire. Britains had to have gas masks. Even babies. No visable lights at night. When the sirens went off people would sleep in dugouts in the garden, or cages they hoped would keep them alive till they were dug out. If they were lucky they sheltered underground in tube stations. Plus all the major cities docks and industrial centres were bombed heavily. 50% of the city of Coventrys houses were flattened. Every adult from old men( National guard who were tasked with fire spotting manning anti aircraft guns etc, often helping as volunteer fire service and digging out people and corpses from bombed buildings). To women as land girls growing crops or in factories making bombs and bullets, or as ambulances drivers. Queen Elizabeth at the time a princess was in the army as a truck driver. Whilst Americans who only joined the war after we had fought for years, and after Pearl Harbour. Your people lived in comfort during the war whilst ours lived on rations, our children playing in the rubble occassionally finding parts of unexploded munitions and body parts.
