A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inner lining of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It is performed using a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope, which has a light and a camera at its tip to transmit images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to visually inspect the area. This procedure is commonly used to investigate gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss. It is also a critical screening tool for colorectal cancer and can detect polyps, which are growths that may develop into cancer over time. During a colonoscopy, the doctor can also perform biopsies and remove polyps if necessary. Preparation for the procedure typically involves dietary restrictions and bowel-cleansing medications to ensure the colon is empty, providing clear visibility for the examination. Colonoscopies are generally safe, though they carry some risks like bleeding or perforation of the colon, which are rare.
During the colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist inserts a flexible, tube-like instrument called a colonoscope through the rectum into the colon. The colonoscope, equipped with a light and camera, transmits images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to visually inspect the colon's lining. If necessary, small tools can be passed through the colonoscope to remove polyps or take biopsies for further analysis. The procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and patients are monitored as the sedation wears off before they can go home. Recovery is generally quick, with most individuals resuming normal activities within a day, though they may experience mild bloating or cramping.
