    I have this model and got it back in 2021 when it was $2200. I originally was trying to get a SC Tallboy but the waiting time was like a year out at the time. I settled on the lower end Stumpy because I was like I’ll get a Tallboy once they are in stock and then sell the Stumpy off. But to be honest, I actually have ended really liking the stumpy and love specialized customer service even more. My rear wheel kept giving out and they covered it and upgraded it an MTB I30 e bike wheel. Nothing fancy but it’s just the fact that they did something to correct an issue which I really appreciated. A year later and the bike has been great. I ride the bike pretty hard and it’s been holding up great. The only thing that I would upgrade at this point on mine would be the rear suspension and the brakes. Love the bike other than that!! I’m still getting an SC though lol. I’ll keep this bike still and rather than get a Tallboy, I’ll get a Hightower instead only because I really like the frame geo on the SCs. But all in all, because of this bike, I’m not ruling out the higher end Stumpys either.

    I bought this exact model on sale for 2,200 bucks and immediately upgraded the suspension to a Fox 36 Grip X and a Factory Float X. The point is, it's a great way to get started and still have room to upgrade as your skills improve. I highly recommend it for that reason alone-the important thing is that it gets you out on the trails!

    I purchased this bike 2 weeks ago, and I am glad you guys finally did a review on it. I gotta say as my first full suspension bike I am not disappointed with my purchase at all. For me, the bike is more than I need right now, which is great in that it allows room for improvement in my skill level. Tires have been great, I haven't noticed any issues with shifting or the brakes (but like I said this is my first FS bike), and the geometry feels great. The only bad things I have to say about the bike are: 1) the rear shock seems pretty lousy. It is an X-Fusion 02 Pro RL and honestly it is hard to tell the difference between the locked out and open position. and 2) the overall weight of the bike is significant. I don't notice it much on climbs but mostly just moving it around in the garage - its a beast.

      I loved the bike and kept it for 15 yrs riding it all over the USA, especially down Colorado and California mountains.
      I eventually upgraded all of the components with Deore XRT and other awesome goodies because the frame was amazing, very rigid and super lightweight and was handmade in California .. After riding this bike, I couldn’t get over a few key things like 1) the suspension and 2) the overall spec. I knew that I’d be looking to get rid of the suspension and the brakes asap. Plus it felt like to limiting if a bike given that my skill level isn’t beginner, I had been riding a hardtail for a while. I really wanted the version above this but didn’t have the money. I bought a 2021 YT Jeffsy and waited four months. I made my choice due to the more playful nature of the YT and the spec on YT is basically the same as the carbon Stumpy and I was able to get a 27.5” version, although it is heavier than carbon. But I’m so happy with my choice! Experienced riders should not look at this alloy stumpy, but it would serve as a great beginner for someone who’s needing that first while of riding to really learn how to ride in the first place

    Bought this bike summer 2020 for 2K the month it came out and I’ve spent a lot of time on it. I ended up upping the travel on the suspension to 150 on the original fork and this year I bought a fox 36 and Marzocchi coil for it. Brakes, dropper, and rims hold up well to long days of abuse (I’ve used this bike at a small DH park 4 times). Biggest drawbacks are definitely the suspension and the groupset (crank broke off the bottom bracket after a year) if you want to start pushing the bike at higher speeds and doing features. Back then it was a good deal but with it costing over $2,700 and the bike not getting any better parts since a while now, I’m not sure it’s the best deal anymore.
    *This is only my opinion

    I definitely recommend spending the extra grand on the Comp level SJ. I owned one for a few months while I waited for my Carbon Expert SJ and it was a very solid rig. The basic Rhythm 34 is a great fork and I actually prefer the simpler adjustments vs my new bike's 34 Performance Elite (which is a better performing fork, but too I like the sweep adjust compression adjuster on the Rhythm).
    I do like the snappier feel of my carbon flex stays, but the horst link rear end is a bit better on technical, loose climbs. The rear wheel tracks the ground better.

      This is true- I bought one in 2019 for the frame. At the time didn't have the extra $1k for the next model up. I was able to upgrade and swap components over time. I was able to end up with a really nice build with the cost spread out over a couple years. I would recommend that route to anyone with the patience for it.
      Not to mention, now I have a deep appreciation for the difference between good suspension, brakes, etc vs. bad.

    • @TeddyParker
      @TeddyParker 2 года назад +3

      @@davidr5572 Totally. It's a respectable path especially since the upcharge model is only NX, so you can more precisely pick and choose what your upgrades are, even if it ends up being the same prices or even a touch more. Maybe a GX derailleur instead of NX. You can also even throw on a Deore 12sp mech and it works, saving a bunch of money compared to a GX upgrade.
      There are many ways to go about it, but I just feel bad for people spending this kind of cheddar and thinking "this is what 2500+$ of brakes, suspension, and shifting feels like... And that's just such a bad precedent. And to those people I casually outstretch my arm in the direction of Giant and Polygon lol

    Would assume it's far easier to tune the rear shock on the aluminum horst link. Also, 130mm on a 45mm stroke shock is just "off." There's a 60mm stroke Spot Mayhem at 130mm of travel that might seem "off" as well. But, that said, the geo is pretty good from what I'm hearing and seeing. Not sure about bottom bracket height. But, should be a good long-term value based on the geo alone.

    I have a 2021 stumpy alloy, my complaints with it are right where they said. Brakes and suspension. Brakes are very under powered and with me being a 250Lbs+, I could really have a more power setup on the Brakes. Suspension is rather soft for me but that's probably because of my weight. The SX drivetrain I do find sloppy at times. On the street it's fine but once on the trail and trying to down shift on a climb, it just becomes very clunky. I would like to upgrade everything to something like you would see on the Evo but then I may as well just sell mine and buy the carbon Evo. But at the same time, I'd rather not have a carbon bike.

    Even though this claim is unfounded and I may be a fool for thinking this, I worry about the long term reliability of a flex stay with the carbon possibly accumulating fatigue over time. The horst link pivot may not feel as snappy, but it gives me better peace of mind

    • @rolux4853
      @rolux4853 2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately that piece of mind is false..
      Carbon has a much better longterm elasticity than aluminum.
      Aluminium looses it’s elasticity pretty fast compared to Carbon if you bend it again and again.
      A good proof for this are 90s aluminum mtb frames.
      Lots of them have developed cracks at the points where they get stressed the most, ie headtube and chainstays.
      Steel bike do not have this problem since they are much more elastic/flexible.
      Of course the resin used in carbon can and will harden out over time too, but aluminum is much worse when it comes to its limit in elasticity.
      Apply a tad too much and it’s damaged forever.
      The boarder between an elastic and a permanent bends is very very small on aluminum.

NX Sram parts are still pretty low tier (which are much better than what this has), but GX (mid tier level) or higher will not work on this frame. Might as well buy a new bike.
