The rain barrels are much thicker than a garbage can. I ended up using plastic welding with great success, here's the video: ruclips.net/video/IECD0dVc0aA/видео.html

Could I use the drill method instead of the hacksaw?

I really would love to know how to replace those 8 wheeled suitcase wheels.. this seems easier than the diy I have on my hands. Though our wheels look just as worn out, I just want to replace them with inline wheels as well. Since the Amazon replacement wheels are just as plastic as the ones they came with. 😢 do you think it could be replaced with inline skate wheels?

koya5001, a couple thoughts, there are cheap wheels and better wheels and replacement parts available on Amazon. The ones used in this video were inline skate quality wheels. I dont have an 8 wheel suitcase so haven't replaced any of those although comment makes me think about buying one and seeing what it would be like to fix them. Not all suitcases are the same quality so that is also a factor. Thanks for your comment.

Trying to figure this out on a bag where the wheels were attached to an assembly that was then riveted onto the bag. That means that the inside axle piece is still "outside" the bag and I haven't figured out a good way to access it.

What if the liner of your bag doesn’t have a zipper or opening

All the luggage I have like this has zippers. I guess you could split the seam, make the repair, then sew it back up again.

For anyone watching this and thinking that a sawzall would be a faster way to cut the old axles, DON'T! I did it and it heats the metal axle up enough to melt the plastic around it. I almost ruined my suitcase.

2 wheel, soft sided gang here FTW. I don't need new wheels, just watching for nothing.
