Every van lifer video or minimalistic lifestyle I’ve seen they have one thing in common . They are all happy compared to people that work or consume products.
Of course they are all happy, theyre making a video. Happy on video but we have no idea what their day to day life is like.
I got stuck in the desert sand in slab city. This nomad came along and dug me out. I forgot his name...but there is a road turn left at the little hut entrance..he lived in a bus along the water canal. Good guy.
As a former California prison doctor--my observations: These folks seem very nice and warm-hearted; unfortunately, these attracts those who are cold-hearted. The lack of police & justice system is an attractant for the 1% of society who prey upon good & kind people. Enjoy life & freedom, but be careful.

I really needed to see this today. Listening to Builder Bob talk about his life having a purpose and the work he does for the community making a difference, I couldn't help but cry. I'm at a point where I feel stuck in a rut I can't get out of. What an amazing community with an even more amazing story. There's still a lot of beautiful people and places in the world. Thank you for making this film and reminding me of that. I've been missing it lately ❤️

I went to slab city a few year ago. I was so amazed at the folks that lived there. No snobs around and sweet humble people. One person said you are part of my family. I was so honored.
living off grid (I'm in Canada) looks easy but it's much like "tending a small farm". For me I have a constant routine day and night. I lived in a van for 7 years. I got into my first motorhome in 2014 and had to learn a few things the hard way. when I upgraded to a slightly bigger RV, I was a few years into some ongoing issues around city bylaws and sewage waste management. I kept searching online for a better alternative to using the RV's flush toilet and black water tank. But this was getting me into trouble year after year. One day police and bylaw officers showed up in response to phone call complaints. A nearby business owner would walk passed my RV while talking to bylaw or police on the phone. The minute he saw a bucket under my RV or caught the sewage stink, sure enough I would find cops at my door! The cop said "discontinue using the toilet in the RV". I literally threw that flush toilet in the garbage and switched to a waterless composting toilet. A few years back, I installed a small wood stove. I started burning all my paper (toilet paper). from my searches for a better method of managing the sewage waste, I found out about incinerator toilets. But the cost to purchase an incinerator toilet was way out of my reach! I simply set up a small bucket. Since I use a wood stove and I have to do most of the wood cutting inside the RV during the winter. I keep an endless amount of ash and sawdust. I also discontinued using store bought kitty litter for my cat! One winter, both me and my cat were sharing the same toilet. After I once lost my cat during a short travel, when I got him back, he peed on the floor one morning. All I did was cleaned up his mess with a scoop of sawdust and he made his mark on his home!I don't pile up buckets of composting sewage. It's a single use setup, after I use it, I cover the smell with the sawdust/ash mixture and it gets scooped out (hands free) and toss it in the wood stove. I've also used the wood stove to incinerate all my single use plastics and paper waste gets burned for heating the RV. I don't pollute the water system. I am unemployed and destitute where I live. But I'm richer than everybody else who's caught in the high costs of living where I live
We all can learn from everyone living there in slab city. Sounds very peaceful and everyone looks out for each other unlike the rest of the world

Slab City is a very interesting place. I’ve seen your other video! Also watched others, still want to visit there! What they have done and how they “run” their world is just incredible! Yep, I’d love to visit them! Maybe one day.

I'd like to go out there with a small crew of guys and if the residents are willing to put in the work and effort , give them at least a rudimentary well-fed water system so they wouldn't have to be dependent on having their water shipped in they can just put ground .
Nothing wrong with a clean glass water to drink , a bit of a shower and the means to at irrigate at least a modest Garden for their own food !

Idk where the water would come from. They're on a salt slab. The lake water is 100% toxic. The wind from the lake causes cancer. That's why it's abandoned. You'd have to have some sort of serious filtration system.
You could possibly do some sort of rain barrel or evaporation system though

Oh, I stayed there for a week at the Hot Springs. It was very nice but pepper spray save my ass from a wild pitbull.🥳

I saw a google story/documentary on slab city today, I’ve been watching RUclips over the last 10 years on slab city. It’s been around since the military picked up sticks and left 1950 or there about ot. Old folks would go out there with there travel trailers and somewhat vacation out there, (1960s). then a guy built salvation mountain and as old folks were unable to afford apartments on social security more moved out there to live. Now many homeless and some social outcasts began living out there . They seem to keep it simple and have rules. My opinion is and hope I’m wrong. Society wants to bring attention to the slab and have a corporation or conglomerate purchase the land to boot em’ out. Without realizing this place works well for those that need it. And the preying on small or weak individuals by creeps are booted out/not tolerated. I hope this place stays as it is. And those tiny home villages by corporations are not allowed to buy it. If the government wanted to put rent free tiny homes with running water and shelter to offer a better quality of life for these people, I wonder if they would want that? If they did. Hope it stays.

I wish that people would stop marketing slab city. People are going to catch on and ruin this forgotten city. There is a reason why it is free, the more people exploit slab city, then more people will flock and eventually it won’t be free. The only advertisement this place should get is word of mouth. For travelers only. This is a place where people with nothing can make a life for them selves. Once it’s gone then what.

Where I live, nearby is an eco village called Findhorn Foundation. It’s lovely and they also have an interesting wee library, meditation gardens and hall for events, talks and courses. Over the years though, the people who can live there-has become quite exclusive and for those with money to live the lifestyle.
@@Looshfarmer kind of like living in a vehicle? I first heard about Findhorn decades ago and have always wanted to go. It seems like what starts out as a way to have a better life ends up becoming exclusive and filters out the people who need it the most. I'm sorry to hear that this happened to Findhorn as well. Of course this isn't completely true about vehicle dwelling, but much of social media would have you believing it has. Social media is a two-edged sword; it alerts many people who wouldn't have otherwise had the idea that they could move into a vehicle when they can no longer afford traditional housing, but it also has become trendy and thus popular for people who definitely can (and often still do) have homes. The mental health benefits alone make vehicle living a godsend for anyone who can boondock. I just hope the popularity of vanlife isn't its downfall.
The insufferable California bureaucrats will eventually come down on them if it gets too much attention. If it appears in the net work or cable news and it is portrayed negatively, it will then be cracked down upon by the insufferable bureaucrats.

People have been snowbirding there since the 1930s.. I've seen films from as far back as the 70s...it was really cool back then..before people started leaving all there trash there..they had dances, pot luck suppers, and huge swap meets.
Only in winter....it was like Poor man's Palm Springs... it's a shame that people use it as a dumping ground now.

Very nicely done. Great interviews! I can't handle heat like that. But it was fun to see. For folks who can handle the heat it would be a good alternative location for full or part time living.

Builder Bob looks like Santa Claus. Wouldn't be a life at Slab City I could ever embrace but for those who don't fit into the regular way of living, why not let them be as they as they don't dump their waste and trash like the homeless do on the streets.

I'm from the UK and lived out in Utah in the early 2000's for 3 years. ! I was lucky enough to get to see the majority of the States out West, I am however pissed that I never made it out to the Slabs. ! This is my kind of place and I need to see it before I leave this world. ! Great video, thanks ..✌

Builder Bob's story really resonated with me and brought more than one tear to my eye. But I can say I'm very happy to see that he found his purpose in life and found a happiness and freedom that really very few will experience in their life. As an older guy myself (51) I feel a lot of the things Bob has gone through in his life. I swear if I was to for whatever reason be separated from my wife and our children and had to live on my own I would pack up and go spend whatever life I had left there in slab city and leave something behind that would benefit those who came after me. I've had the opportunity to experience community living kinda like slab city I had a friend who was a musician and his parents were very successful wealthy artists and they had a 100 acre chunk of land that they built off grid tiny homes on and they would bring in artists of all kinds to stay for as long as they wanted as long as they were helping out around the place and creating their art whatever it may be. And I stayed there awhile while making music with him and his wife and it was great. Never felt more free and alive than I did then. My dad always told me something that to this day still sticks with me but the older I get the more it makes sense and it was "we've become too civilized for our own good". He wasn't talking about us becoming wild people and living in the stone age what he meant or at least my interpretation of it is that we've allowed our freedom and liberty to live our lives on our own accord to be taken from us and centralized through government and dictated from it just how we all should be living and functioning under the "laws" and edicts they set forth. And in the majority of times we're only as free as we are able to buy the permits for said freedom and it always comes with an expiration date. True freedom is dangerous and it comes with many unseen unexpected events that in most cases are life changing or life ending and because of that many people foolishly will give up that essential freedom for a little "promised" security from the government. And that never ends well for them or anyone else. I personally don't have a problem with whatever dangers or unforseen mishaps that may come from living completely free and on my own. I believe more people should be the same way. I'm a true anarchist at heart and those who know the real definition of anarchy knows that it doesn't mean chaos and disorder but simply without a ruler. And we don't need rulers or those to govern over us. Free people don't need to be governed and governed people are not free. To me it's completely insane and sick to know that we're making a handful of people stupidly rich from our laboring energies and in return they take more of our freedom and liberty and make up all the rules that never benefit us in any good way. We need more slab cities and more people willing to live their lives on their own accord and refuse to be governed in any way. Become ungovernable.. That is my advice for everyone..

I have to comment on the darker side of this place....I went there... just wanted to let people know..yes, it can be fun and artsy if you hang with the right people. Just take note: there is hardly clean water. Even the residents dont use clean water when they cook, you can get giardia very easily, I know many people that left there with stomach illness and parasites. Also, there is alot of talk of the hot springs but it just a good way to pick up these parasites even though the residents will tell you that its so nice, the water kills the bacteria blah blah. People literally take baths in there and no the water is not hot enough. I saw dogs running around with feces on them, my friend literally had to give some strangers dog a bath because he kept wiping up against people and getting feces on them and the owner just laughed. There was also a girl there walking around with menstrual blood running down her leg because she believed in just being 'natural' and not wearing pads. My point is- go and have fun. Stay a night at the range, bob, Stay alert. Be cautious. Take sanitary precautions and dont let others influence you to use the stuff there that looks cool or dont even eat the food. lol Bring your own food and water. :) The people there are so nice and they will offer water and food etc alchohol but dont accept. Just politely decline. Theres alot of cool people Im just being real.
Kinda figured this after watching another vid about this place...just had a lot of questions..especially when this one Artsy guy was talking about all the trash ...one quick sign for me not to go anywhere near it..filth breeds disease.

Nice job Jeepsy , so many videos of slab city rarely show the people as you have . There is a sadness in Bob's story and happiness in the fact that he lives for music .Many of the residents are getting old and weathered the desert takes it's toll ...for many a place to hide .

I would like to thank you for your long interview with Builder Bob it did definitely did tell some of Slab City’s history and it did tell a very human side of the story. I wish everyone well because so far the Fall of 2023 is colder than normal. I wish Builder Bob well.
