The "Detached tower" is often referred to as the Donjon and it is the word the term Dungeon is derived from, where prisoners were kept in a tower away from the castle. Which explains why prisoners like Rapunzel (and other stories) was in a tower. Love the castle Wels!!! It is beautiful!
As far as I know, the Donjon was usually the main building of the castle, frequently not connected to the wall, like a fortification inside the fortification. And even then that's not aways true, some of them had one wall that was part of the exterior wall. The part of it sometimes being used as a prison is true.

I am sure some sources vary on this, but when most of them call it the "Tower" it's not a main building. I'm really glad wels has come back to consistent Hermitcraft episodes. He is quickly becoming a regular hermit on my watch list this season! I'm loving the light beef with Hypno, and the build is really cool! His thought process is very easy to follow and apply to my own Minecraft building.
Ditto. I was really skeptical of him because he seemed to flake out last few seasons, but he's already uploaded more episodes than last season. In addition, I'm a big fan of Minecraft castles, so his build fits one of my preferences. Also, I'm loving the occasional dog barks in the background. 🐕
@@grondheroimo he was doing vault hunters stuff which i really enjoyed can't say i am unhappy with hermit craft either , the first hermit i consistently watched all the way back in season 5 , before that it was on and off so it's really nostalgic for me
@@linkedlord343 I started watching in Season 6 and he didn't keep up after that. While many Hermits did Vault Hunters, I could never get in to it. I prefer a more vanilla Minecraft (even the hats are starting to get to me here).

Glow lichen is also great for subtle light! toss it on the gray blocks and it'll either fade into the block texture or just turn into cracks from a distance
I love how layfolk-friendly Welsknight's projects are. They don't intimidate us casual builders in our building approaches. Bdubs and Gem and Pearl are Awesome builders, but their builds kind of intimidate me. Welsknight's are simple, and in that regard, shines uniquely. It seems to be the best Building style for vanilla minecraft. Blocky, medieval, smaller scale. Plus his music taste is just evangelizing.
Does anyone else just love how unhinged the Hermits are this season? 😂 Grian's fisherman personality, Mumbo's uh...llama base, Joel just being himself honestly, Iskall being a menace, Beef's payback (fairly so because of all the pranks being done to him), and now Wells putting a whole tunnel into someone else's storage room xD. I love how much more authentic all of the Hermits' interactions feel this go around!
Castles is looking amazing! For lighting don't forget about glow lichen. It doesn't have the largest light area but it also adds another layer of texture, so it's nice to put around different areas.
The way Wels was lurking at the end of the tunnel from Hypno's perspective had me laughing earlier. It was like a toddler proudly waiting for praise after 'surprise redecorating' the wall for their parent. 🤣
If there is one person on the server that deserves an explosion in popularity its Wels. Seems to be a casualty of being around a long time that you don't get the 'new guy boost' that others have benefited from
For the windows, you can use glass panes on the back and the waxed orange copper or aged orange copper grates on the front. Especially since a lot of old Tudor style castles and churches had a lot of Ironwork windows. Fun fact, most of the Iron was forcibly taken by King George ((?) might be wrong on the king's name.)) In order to "Refill the kingdom's coffers" after the hundred years war.

@@procrastinator547 Not only did they not make him, just asked and collaborated with him and he chose to downsize upon conversing. But also that build was right in the middle of MANY of the other's full-time bases and may have interfered with them a bit hence the suggestions. Docs build is in the shopping district! Not only is pretty much nothing else major built there yet, so its not interfering as anything can be built around it, and the shopping districts are usually quite eclectic, but its also the LOGS shop - which is a major shop usually. Think about the Log shop last season Gigalogs, it was MASSIVE. :)
I think a small chapel in that half tower out front would be a great choice. As would small houses near the detached tower. That way the central area remains the gathering point, but some folks can live inside the walls without being residents of the castle itself.

The lanterns on the banners are genious. From a bit of a distance they look like that golden orb you can sometimes find on flagpoles and I think that is awesome.
I can't describe it, but there's just something about Wel's videos that is just so good. Also, it's fun to see that we're not the only ones using HC episodes to track how long a grind took.
I have to say the tunnel into the storage room is one of the funniest bits I have seen on the server this season. I don’t have any idea what the behind the scenes conversations are like but the ambiguity of not knowing somehow makes it funnier to me.
A good idea, if you wont have nothung to bulid cause your land is small, you could build a ship, for refrence, i think the Immperial ship from Skyrim will look dope. Love ypur vids Wels
a little idea here: when texturing you should add some erosion to that main front bit nearer to where the wall meets the water also why not try make the window design you added in place of stained glass a sort of emblem to place on banners as whatever kingdom's flag this

Maybe you could build some weapons like cannons and trebuchets (not much practical use but it´s fantasy style anyway) to give a little more movement and the sense that the build is actually being used. It looks pretty nice but it feels empty. Maybe some strays/skeletons as archers manning the walls.
Hypno's non-response to the asymmetry dig brought me back to his season 2 tower build, his modded pyramid, and all those times we use to razz him about how stuff was a block off all the time.

I was not expecting the sudden full castle. Was amazing. The build is great, definitely my number one Hermit this season.

You can illuminate the roof with glowlichen. They are not visible from below and from above it looks like moss and lichen. or bird poop ;-)

If you need to texture the roof more, we know from Iskall, Beef, and Cleo that red terracotta works surprisingly well with Netherrack XD
