Pecos Hank (pronounce PAY-cos, by the way) is one of the absolute best tornado guys to watch. He knows what he is doing, he stays calm most of the time, and he takes gorgeous photos and videos of the storms. Oh, and he writes songs, so you are right, he's very poetic. I qualify Hank as a storm spotter, rather than a storm chaser. To me, chasers want to get as close as they can, either for the adrenaline, or for the science, while spotters stay more on the outskirts of the storm, in order to track and report it's size, location, and general movement to the authorities in order to warn the public as things are happening. But yeah, it's all fascinating to me. -- Storm ratings are based on the amount of damage done. So, a big storm may be rated an EF3 while what seems like a smaller storm might be rated an EF5. It is a combination of size, internal wind speeds, and the speed it travels across the ground, plus whether it is going over a developed area or open fields, that will determine it's rating on the EF scale. It would be nice if we could have a rating scale based just on internal wind speeds but that would require us to be able to consistently and reliably collect that data, which we cannot yet do.

The EF scale is a damage scale. It has nothing to do with it's size or windspeed. If a tornado doesn't produce any or little damage then it will have a low rating while if a tornado completely destroys strong and sturdy structures like a city or town then it will have a higher rating.
That's why El Reno was a EF3 because there was no signs of EF5 damage even though it had F5 winds.

My mom grew up in tornado country and there were never any ifs, ands, or buts about it. Tornados are unpredictable and most people who stop and observe are absolutely putting themselves in danger. The professional storm chasers are literally putting their lives on the line. Never stop and observe.

Have you checked out Dan Robinson’s footage of himself narrowly avoiding the 2013 El Reno tornado? It’s a crazy video.

Hey there! Great choice with this video! Storms are definitely fascinating.
I've had to run from a tornado or two, and if I were to ever come across another, I'd do no different. I couldn't bring myself to just stand there in front of one either.

Yeah of course, I put his name in the title of the video. But should I also put something else? Like in the description, what would you suggest? I definitely don’t wanna disrespect anyone
