See i have to dispute the whole "Guilty Gear is more mainstream than Blazblue." Strive is, but prior to that the Blazblue games historically sold a lot better than Guilty Gear. Prior to Strive, Guilty Gear was lucky to get to about 200K.
I remember when I was a teen when guilty gear was mostly niche compared to BlazBlue. Especially since the series was in some weird limbo due to licencing issues back then. I remember just watching gameplay back before xrd got released and got so hyped how good it looked. I remember people going crazy at arcs adding a 3 frame buffer and accusing it of becoming a casual game just that 😂. Times have definitely changed. Guilty gear I feel has better designed characters so I'm not exactly against this change.
Exactly, Guilty Gear probably *should've* been more mainstream, but the reality is people (especially outside of JP) kinda didn't know Guilty Gear existed until Xrd game out. Or, at least, you were most likely already *very* into fighting games if you were aware of GG before... probably 2010-ish? Compared to Blazblue which, for whatever reason, picked up a lot more people than GG ever did, at first anyway. Strive flipped that pattern obviously.
The fact that there was no VF at all is mind-blowing. The original and 4E are hugely important historically, or you could argue for the last one being best. But none of them? wtf
IGN felt a bit more catered to hard-core vs WatchMojo's. From the moment that they said they were doing a separate list for platform fighters. Not to say platform fighters aren't for the hard-core, but they definitely are deserving of their own list, and are their own thing.
I was looking ahead on the track to see the chapters while watching this video and I really loved the anticipation when I got to top #2 and you weren't even considering that it could be a platform fighter, so funny!
9:53 " If your going to put a game on from BlazBlue, it should be Central Fiction" Agreed, since "BlazBlue Central Fiction" is a game that is arguably just as complex as "Guilty Gear XRD Revelator," with the game like Revelator having legacy skill, meaning if you haven't stuck with the game since the original back in 2008 you have a MASSIVE hill to climb in learning frame data for each character's normals, gatlings, and overall mobility options that can be used on offense and neutral. Then there are the game's plentiful system mechanics, such as having a half a dozen options on defense that you need to master such as having four ways to block based on specific scenarios for example, and the game having a multitude of wake up options with each having a specific use, and that's not even going into the Drive mechanic, which is a unique action for each character, which there are OVER 35 of, which MOST of the cast plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other. Mainline BlazBlue games were HUGE in japan, with it being popular in many Japanese arcades, and as Majin Obama stated in a podcast with Blasted Salami that the series had at one point been up there even with the almighty Tekken in terms of popularity. With many veterans like Dogura ( who is one of the best players in Guilty Gear who uses Slayer) and Fenrich ( who is arguably the best BB player, and currently one the best in DBFZ) representing the series for a long time . Sadly, The series just never took off over here in the west. However, the lack of popularity nationwide doesn't equate to the game's quality. The fact that is arguably the most unique AND complex 2D fighter on the market, but isn't talked about hardly at all in the west was always baffling to me. Especially when I read comments, and watch videos of people in the FGC complaining about how boring fighting games have gotten recently, or how easy it has become and yet will REFUSE to give the game a try. Thankfully, that seems to be changing, for instance Lord Knight, a tournament player who plays a variety of different fighting games recently made a fighting game tier list and put "BlazBlue Central Fiction" near the top, as well as popular Guilty Gear content creators like Majin Obama saying on blasted salami's podcast that "BlazBlue Central Fiction" is HARDER than Guilty Gear Xrd. For those who want to see high level game play in order to get a grasp of how hype this game can potentially be for you, I'd recommend a video titled "BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Grand Finals - Evo 2014" on youtube, and while the game represented there is not Central Fiction, I think it works, since Central Fiction is more of an evolution of Chrono Phantasma any way. Other channel's include "Burst Recap" and "Jourdal" for more high level Japanese play. Finally, BB TAG and mainline BlazBlue games are two SEPARATE things all together, with BBTAG having it's own set of rules with the system mechanics, and SIMPLIFYING ALL of the characters. It's for these reasons that you can't approach "BlazBlue Central Fiction" in the same way that you would BBTAG.
My money is on that they are looking at BlazBlue and Guilty Gear as being the same series/game. That is the only way I could see the omission of GG with BB on the list. lol
I haven't played fighting games in ages but your content is awesome. You have such a passionate love for the genre and an engaging personality that gets me excited to pick one up again.
2:31 I think you meant to say the Tenkaichi games, the Budokai games were relatively straightforward 3D fighters, like a less technical Tekken, Virtua Fighter, or Dead or Alive.
Hey JM, love your videos! Especiallylove your 3S content :) You've inspired me to pick up Tekken 7 after not really FGs since Tekken 3 (life got in the way...). I bought a USB adaptor to use my old Namco Arcade stick, but I'm am finding I often miss the LK button because it's so much lower than RK. I keep dropping my index and middle fingers from LP/RP to find LK/KR, but basically only find RK :( Keeping my hand at an angle to hit LK more consistently hurts after a few mins. :( So I have two questions: 1) Which sticks (or layout) is best to avoid this? So far I'm looking at those with the lower row more in line with the top, VS LP/square and LK/X being shifted down... And 2) What stick do YOU use?? Could you please do a 'My Gear/Rig' video?? I'm sure we'd all love to see that!! :) Thanks heaps and keep up the good work! PS Azazel suuuuuuuuucks! >_
Persona over Guilty Gear! I believe in Persona 4 Arena Supremacy! I like this list more because it actually includes most of my favorites, P4AU, Darkstalkers, DOA, FFNY, etc but no +R is crazy
How is Power Stone 2 not a fighting game? It’s just Ehrgeiz with better graphics. JM disrespecting Power Stone…damn. And War of the Monsters is just a 3D version of SNK’s King of the Monsters. Which is basically a wrestling game, but with Kaiju. Glad mvc2 made the list over 3.
As the King of Fighters Fan I have played each game of it and I'm good at it. KOF XIII is good in visual side but even with KOF XIII I didn't stop Playing KOF '98, KOF '98UM, KOF '02 and KOF '02UM. The same thing I did with KOF XI and KOF IX but when KOF X released I never comeback to older KOF games.
bro I love your content! I have a suggestion and I hope someone reads this: I think it would be awesome if you did a 'Fighting Games University', like Zizaran did for Path of Exile. FGs are just as complex as PoE and I think it would make a real contribution to the FGC to make this knowledge more accessible. I'd love to invest more time in fighting games, specially with SF6 on the horizon, but I don't even know what I don't know lol. I think YT lacks good videos about actual FG techniques, from beginner to pro.
JM- I don't know if Power Stone's a fighting game Me- I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE A FIGHTING GAME!! Lol I'm a traditional fighter and smash bros player... I also have a sweet spot for Power Stone. Lol Thinking about it, it may not have really been a fighting game... But in my 10 year old heart who could never afford a Dreamcast, it was THE fighting game 😂
I absolutely loved Power Stone 2, but I definitely never considered it a real fighting game. "Party game with fighting" was pretty much my go-to description just like in this video. The first game I did consider a fighter though, albeit an unorthodox one. But I'm also someone that took a long time to consider the Smash games actual fighting games haha. They're definitely party game-y, but I've come around to the depth of their mechanics.
@@sadowolf Yeah, I feel that. I was more so referring to the first Power Stone. The second one got a bit wild lol And I get it with Smash. It's definitely designed as a party game centered around fighting. Lol But within the community, the way we play it is definitely as a fighting game and not as a party game lol Trying to put my boy that I used to play everything from Tekken to SF to Marvel with on to Melee for the first time after it got a spot at Evo was hilarious. He wasn't having it! Lol
@@Braillionaire Ah okay, yeah then we're on the same page with the first one haha. Loved the 2nd one but I wished it was more like the first. Being exposed to the Smash community more is what brought me more on board with the idea that it's a legit fighting game. I was like oh snap so this game is deceptively deep haha. I never stayed interested in it long enough to really try and get the mechanics down, so anytime I play a good Smash player I get bodied 😂
@@sadowolf hahaha yeah bro. Smash is hard. Lol As a party game it's fun, but as a fighting game, the learning curve is steep. Lol It's truly a game where you have to hit the lab before you can really do anything against any competent player...not even a good player, just a competent player lol Especially Melee, but the rest are difficult in different ways.
I dont know...what if im watching this entire video...waiting for that GG rep to appear, and well...Thats their video problem, not yours, you did great, very enjoyable to watch your reactions 😄.
no guilty gear in a list with whatever war of the monsters and project justice are is so insane to me kind of surprised to not see 3rd strike on here but i guess sf2 is more important

And you said that WatchMojo was shady about the Capcom comment, LOL...
I knew the moment I didnt see a Smash Bros. title anywhere before SF2 that it was going to be #1 lmao. The actual top 3 should have been Strive/Xrd REV2, MvC2 and 3rd Strike imo.
Watch MOJO is generally a casual perspective. I am happy for the project justice mention. I loved rival schools and project justice. Soul caliber 1 and 2 are my favorites. Battle arena toshibden series is fun. No cvs2 or svc chaos is odd. I don't consider smashBros a fighting game. I love it. But not really a fighting game
Good shout out to the WatchMojo lady, her voice is so soothing that you probably wouldn't be able to pause the vid to comment on it :( Great stuff, jm!
I get down to some WatchMojo videos now and then, but I think a more valid video title could be Does "WatchMojo Know ANYTHING??" Their lists are pretty consistently full of headscratchers 😂 Also I thought Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter (and Capcom vs SNK for me personally) were some pretty major snubs. Smash is nowhere near my personal #1 but it's hugely popular and just a huge game so I get it.
I remember watching a couple Watchmojo lists about my favorite music genre and realizing pretty quickly that their lists are just popularity contests and safe, zero controversy takes. Their takes are so safe and mainstream they almost always backfire and people rag on them for being so predictable. Which is still interaction on their channel, so I guess they'll laugh all the way to the bank.
@@LordBaktor Exactly, they try to give the safest takes, which will always earn the ire of purists. But they know what they are, and it gets them a lot of engagement, which ultimately is what matters to them haha
Everybody gets so excited when KI shows up on one of these lists it almost feels like it should place higher just from that. It's my personal nr 2, but that's just subjective taste.
Ik there's not much hype around it to warrant content rn but I'd love some P4U videos. The rollback update was the first time I picked up the game and of all the stuff out atm it's my favorite to mess around in. It's simplified without going as far as Strive, for example, in the streamlining.
As a casual, KOF 13 was my favorite to watch. Yes cuz it looks awesome, but also because hype stuff happened in it. That speed up mechanic that let you perform super combos was niiice. To me it looked like the "just right" middle ground between the slow methodical footsies of SF4 and the crazyness of whatever guilty gear was out at the time
i woule been pretty shocked if they didn't include smash games since they had powerstone and war of the monsters. ultimate above melee? no melee at all? TRASH list
Since you're on this kick of big media channels talking about fighting games, you should check out the Polygon video on getting into fighting games (Hope I didn't miss it if you did, I tried to check for it)
It's stupid crazy that they don't have any of the guilty gears series or bloody roar but has something like power stone and that monster something on the 20th
I remembered when whatmojo did a Dead By Daylight top 10 killers, from the best to the worst on the tier list, and it was disgusting to watch. Not only because it was wrong (for example putting low tier killers on top 4 or 3), mostly for the reasons of the order of the list. Basically if you watch the gameplay of the video, they said: Alright imma play every single killer once or twice for the video. If I do good, that means the character is good, if I do bad, that means the character is bad. That's not how tier lists work... It's likes saying Happy Chaos is low tier bc you couldn't win your first games and Potemkin is high tier bc you won more times on towers.
you should try war of the monsters, It's fun, a nice party game. Ther's a new game, similar to war of the monsters, I think it's called gigabash, I don't know if it's good, but the idea is there
It is good. Gigabash is a cross between War of the Monsters and King of the Monsters but with the 3D Brawler arena similar to Power Stone. The game did heavily improve by adding more single-player modes such as arcade mode, onslaught (survival mode but with the option to go co-op with a friend), mini-games that can now be played both offline and online, and 4 guest fighters: Godzilla, Gigan, Mecha Godzilla, and Destoryah. The game's mechanics feel smooth and the roster while small for now is diverse the following monsters have unique playstyles that work for some players. Luckily they confirm that there will be more future content.

Ciompletely agree. Goddamn BB is awesome!!!
BBCF is absolutely beautiful and a ton of fun, just a shame that we never got an official dub like the previous games.
Surprised Virtua Fighter didnt make the list
My money is on that they are looking at BlazBlue and Guilty Gear as being the same series/game. That is the only way I could see the omission of GG with BB on the list. lol
Watch Mojo is the first RUclips channel I ever unsubscribed from. Glad to see I'm not missing anything.
People watch WatchMojo still???? Shame on you.
Persona over Guilty Gear! I believe in Persona 4 Arena Supremacy!
I like this list more because it actually includes most of my favorites, P4AU, Darkstalkers, DOA, FFNY, etc but no +R is crazy
great content but i disagree with your take on power stone 2 not being a fighting game.
No Capcom Vs SNK 2 is absolutely insane.
Between you, Maximilian Dude, and Justin I've never felt more hyped about a fighting game as I do about SF6 coming
It's just a random list, there is no reason why this one is #7 and this one #4. That's WatchMojo, they take good things and do a random ranking.
bro I love your content!
That list was all over the place, it felt like they googled “best fighting games” and then pulled a bunch of names at random
JM- I don't know if Power Stone's a fighting game
Me- I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE A FIGHTING GAME!!
The second one got a bit wild lol
And I get it with Smash. It's definitely designed as a party game centered around fighting. Lol But within the community, the way we play it is definitely as a fighting game and not as a party game lol
Trying to put my boy that I used to play everything from Tekken to SF to Marvel with on to Melee for the first time after it got a spot at Evo was hilarious.
Lol
It's truly a game where you have to hit the lab before you can really do anything against any competent player...not even a good player, just a competent player lol Especially Melee, but the rest are difficult in different ways.
@@Braillionaire I gained mad respect for it when I got clapped in BRAWL by a friend who apparently isn't even all that good among Smash players haha.
I dont know...what if im watching this entire video...waiting for that GG rep to appear, and well...Thats their video problem, not yours, you did great, very enjoyable to watch your reactions 😄.
Why does the B-Roll only contain coomer characters?
no guilty gear in a list with whatever war of the monsters and project justice are is so insane to me
kind of surprised to not see 3rd strike on here but i guess sf2 is more important
Haha, I remember when Max covered this . The pain was real.
EDIT: Maybe that was an older list...now I'm confused...
Like someone said earlier. We need your top 20 now 👍🤣
Dang the shade thrown at rival schools 8:18
my jaw dropped when i saw what they chose for #1
5:55 Jim: "I think if you asked a bunch of people on the street, like, 'Hey, like what do you think is the best King of Fighters game?...,' I think most of them will say, 'I don't know what King of Fighters is...' but those who know will probably say XIII."
And you said that WatchMojo was shady about the Capcom comment, LOL...
Capcom Vs Snk NEEDS to be there
I knew the moment I didnt see a Smash Bros. title anywhere before SF2 that it was going to be #1 lmao. The actual top 3 should have been Strive/Xrd REV2, MvC2 and 3rd Strike imo.
Why do you feel Def Jam counts more than Power Stone as a fighting game?
They really put "War of the monsters" over cvs2 , granblue , the last blade etc
Watch MOJO is generally a casual perspective. I am happy for the project justice mention. I loved rival schools and project justice. Soul caliber 1 and 2 are my favorites. Battle arena toshibden series is fun. No cvs2 or svc chaos is odd. I don't consider smashBros a fighting game. I love it. But not really a fighting game
Good shout out to the WatchMojo lady, her voice is so soothing that you probably wouldn't be able to pause the vid to comment on it :( Great stuff, jm!
Def Jam: Fight for NY is honestly a banger of a game
I get down to some WatchMojo videos now and then, but I think a more valid video title could be Does "WatchMojo Know ANYTHING??"
Their lists are pretty consistently full of headscratchers 😂
Also I thought Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter (and Capcom vs SNK for me personally) were some pretty major snubs.
Does WatchMojo know ANYTHING?
Nope 😐
Indeed, I thought I was subscribed. You caught that one jm
Also what's with these lists never including Garou?
3rd strike, sf alpha 2 and alpha 3..???
Everybody gets so excited when KI shows up on one of these lists it almost feels like it should place higher just from that. It's my personal nr 2, but that's just subjective taste.
Imma go out on a limb and say...no. I use to write for them fools. And the ASRM lady's name is Rebecca and she's BAE tier.
Ik there's not much hype around it to warrant content rn but I'd love some P4U videos. The rollback update was the first time I picked up the game and of all the stuff out atm it's my favorite to mess around in. It's simplified without going as far as Strive, for example, in the streamlining.
I also love KOF 13 because the sprite work is the absolute top of the game. It's just gorgeous.
Cool to hear someone else rep SC5
As a casual, KOF 13 was my favorite to watch. Yes cuz it looks awesome, but also because hype stuff happened in it. That speed up mechanic that let you perform super combos was niiice. To me it looked like the "just right" middle ground between the slow methodical footsies of SF4 and the crazyness of whatever guilty gear was out at the time
It's crazy cause I used to watch Watchmojo like crazy, now I can barely sit through a video of theirs without rolling my eyes 😂
i woule been pretty shocked if they didn't include smash games since they had powerstone and war of the monsters.
ultimate above melee? no melee at all? TRASH list
Almost feels like they just googled fighting games
I'm disappointed that CvS2 got snubbed
"Does WatchMojo Know ANYTHING about Fighting Games??"
Doesn't recognize Project Justice lol
Yo John, maybe you could consider making a personal top 10 or 20 fighting games?
Guilty gear for gb ds was lit. Bouncing from screen to screen with air combos was sick
You should make you own watchmojo style list video xD
Both of these lists missed Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire, the most fun fighting game around.
you should try war of the monsters, It's fun, a nice party game.
When is JMcrofts personal top 10 list?
soulcalibur vi is still a really good one. we just not getting new content, but it saved the series
The WatchMojo host name called Rebecca. I love her voice too
