When he said that the banana was for scale, I was expecting him to show us a massive radioactive banana.

Sadly, this amusement park was never used. The explosion was some days before the opening of the park ...
That's sad
It was opened for a few hours in 27.04.1986.
I like to stare at strangers on public transport and whisper "I'm radiating on you"
XD
Gingeabred Guy “so am I”
Technically on more ways than one...
I sit in public places and when someone says "hiI i looked absolutely shocked and say "you can see me?!!"
My interesting (ish) fact about pretty much the exact spot where this video was filmed is that it's still one of the most radioactive parts of Pripyat, as the empty amusement park (which was due to open in a few days time) was the best available place for helicopters to land and pick up water and fuel whilst attempting to contain the reactor and each time they landed they carried more radioactive material back with them.
I got an ad for Fallout 4 while watching this video, nice.
I got an ad by a supermarket advertising Banana's. Targeted advertising if you ask me
Ironic a banana can cause a nuclear explosion we’ll a *lot of bananas*
Tom: I can't put any of my stuff on to the ground because it may get some radioactive dust.

20-30 bananas: not great, not terrible
So if i would live in another continent i could eat 20-30 bananas more every year.
THANKS SCIENCE!!
Fullsteel Ish Mate, you can eat as many as you want in a year, you just can't eat over 300 in one day, as that's a lethal dose, so your "science," is just plainly wrong.
Michael Whitehorn (pssst Michael.... Michael psst. It's a joke)
Fullsteel Ish Because it was far too tragic to be a joke I assumed you were just delusional, as hinted by your poor spelling mate.
Michael Whitehorn Dude why are you going on the offence it's just a joke? Also i would greatly appreciate if you can say what i spelled wrong because English is not my first language and i am dyslexic so i would like to learn.
Fullsteel Ish You wrote Sience instead of Science
"I brought a banana... for scale."
Funny, i did not know that the 'banana-scale' was something widely 'used'. I saw it first in veritasiums vid and thought he just used it for his video to make it interresting. Nice to find out that it is a 'real thing'.
6 years and this video now has a different vibe :/
...And no, if you live in Europe, you should *not* cut 20 or 30 bananas from your diet every year. ;D
Nillie Eyyep.
Anston, Musician bananas making you sick? THAT'S BANANAS?!!! xd
-_-
But still, just in case, I don't eat bananas
I love how Tom is just standing in one of the most radioactive places on earth in a just a shirt and jeans
Perhaps its not a coincidence. But this video, its locations, its use of bananas, and content are pretty much exactly the same a a recent Veritasium video.
Andrew Morton Ah, that was always going to happen sooner or later! I don't have time to watch everything that other folks are doing, and ultimately there are only so many easily-accessible facts about radiation. So it's a coincidence; hopefully the styles are different enough that it's clear!
***** Also, not all of your fans follow Veritasium.
I assumed it was sheer coincidence :) He was with a film crew making a documentary about Uranium, so all his videos recently have been about radiation, atomic bombs and other related subjects.
Andrew Morton To be fair, Veritasium has an entire series of videos and Documentary on radioactivity.

I remember the day after it happened, I was at school and we had to travel to another school that was annexed to ours (one was Catholic, the other Protestant). I remember looking up at the sky, and it was a horrible rainy day, thinking 'is all that fallout coming onto us?'. Yes it was.
Cody's lab showed his bananas had radiation while extracting the potassium out of them. Great video!

Super fucking cool videos, this one and the last. Radioactive bananas are such a weird thing, man. I always love explanations of relative danger between things that feel safe and things that feel scary.
Who remembers planting claymores up front and putting MacMillan on those hilly sides right behind that ferris-wheel, his leg broken, he's sniping and bunch of enemies come at you. At the very last the heli arrives and after some time they declare they're low on fuel and gives you 30 seconds.

Bananas can also sometimes mess with airport security. Aka if you travel with one in your carry on you might just cause the folks at the security check to get very, very nervous.
I find it hilarious that he went to Chernobyl to make the point that Banana's are radioactive.
smart use of "banana for scale", referring throughout to its radioactivity.
This was very appeeling!
That drone footage is fantastic.
I went to Chernobyl in April so it was great to nice video footage of all the sites I saw.
Did you do 1 day or 2? I did 2 and I was glad I did because you get to see so much more and you're not rushed to see all the sites. You even got time to climb up a part of the DUGA-3 if you wanted and we got to go into the still contaminated water cooling tower. Was that safe? Probably not, but man what an experience.
Fun fact, if you lived in a rural area of Chernobyl and were evacuated to a city like Kiev, the air pollution there would likely be worse health effect wise than if you just stayed there. As far as carcinogens go, radiation is pretty ordinary actually, spare being at ground zero. I talk about this in my latest video, check it out if you want to see the studies on the effects of radiation and how dangerous it can be.
That is great, both in terms of fun and information.
4 weeks ago ny teacher told us that if you ate 10.000 bananas in 10 minuets you would die of radioactive poisoning, and i just stud up and said "AHH YES, THE RADIATION WOULD KILL YOU!"
1000 bananas eaten is equivalent to +1 Micromort
Does that mean if you get bit by a banana you'll get super banana powers?
So if you're poor an can't afford bananas, you should move there!
I will never look at my banana the same way.
fr "ive got a banana for scale" killed me
One banana, two banana, three banana, four. Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more...
I can't believe they made Pripyat from COD into a real thing!!!!!1

Great video once again =) Still on my wishlist to go there! Greatings, a friend from the Netherlands ;)
tomickescape Mate, didn't realise you could be friends with someone you never met, but then again I'm an old pensioner so what do I know.
Michael Whitehorn Fair point, but in that same comment you addressed me as 'mate', which I don't mind. I like to think of everyone as a friend. Maybe 'friend' is a odd choice of words, but hey I value his words and information and wanted to consider him a friend for that.
tomickescape Mate is used ironically most of the time mate. And I wouldn't consider everyone as a friend, since then you're friends with rapisits mate.
I’m gonna petition to have all radioactive material Measured in bananas.
You know it's a serious subject when someone's holding a banana in a pistol-grip.
Anyone else here cuz of those Russians soldiers that have been hospitalised after digging tunnels all over the red Forrest?
Is there any reliable source that has proof that the russian soldiers are being hospitalized for radiation-related issues?

Oh thats clever map at the end
Suddenly someone yelling cheeki breeki in the background
You would have to eat 40,000 bananas in ten minutes to die of radiation poisoning
Power plants do not really explode but often times leak or melt. But there can be a small steam explosion, but *NOWHERE* near the size of an atomic bomb, just the size of an exploding pressurized vault.
wow.. the big ferry wheel thing looks like you can climb it up and stand on top of it ;)
Wish it all still looked like it does in this video... tourists etc have really messed the place up, not to mention the war...
