They have been, they just don't focus on the off-road part, as they don't want to take any hype away from the 4Runner/Tacoma side of things. Meaning, they lave the off-roading to the aftermarket community.
Ill bet expedition overland had a BIG hand in this development. Clay, Kurt and the gang build quality stuff. I bet Lexus will get a lot of love for this rig.
The touchscreen is actually better because of it's simplicity. That's why the 2020 RX went back to a touchscreen and the rest of the model will soon follow. Now the graphics do need serious updating though.
I really like the look of this thing, even the standard one, I think the Lexus version of this looks a lot sharper than the original Toyota version, we only get this as the Land Cruiser Prado in South Africa. This is as you show it here basically just the Land Cruiser Prado with a Lexus badge and a bunch of extra off-road parts... We’ve had said Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with similar upgraded off-road parts offered in South Africa for years, nothing new, except ours are offered in either Turbo Diesel or V6 Petrol options.
Hey Tommy, I'm pretty sure they didn't remove the air springs from that 2019. It's probably a base model they started with (no crawl control or height adjustable suspension just standard steel springs). My dad has a 2018 GX and his switch covers look the same, they're just space holders for where the crawl control and suspension buttons would go if equipped.
This rig is a brute. The OEM looking additions finish it off well, no doubt. Hopefully Lexus makes this GX OR available to the daily overland enthusiast sooner than later.
@@Mike-cz2yw: but, yet, Toyota offers a Sequioa TRD Pro, which is bigger than the LX. Your argument makes zero sense. Why not a diesel powerplant in the LX, too.
That was pretty cool. I do wish they would have “finished it”. Unless they were going to use a highlift jack on the rock sliders......no good place to elevate for tire change. I do think they should have added on a metal bumper in the back for lights, tow points and lift points. Overall.....what a cool concept though!!!!
Good on Lexus for realizing the potential of their own vehicle. And, love that the guy watches your videos and knew about the LC! Either a true enthusiast, or they do extensive background checks on their press attendees. lol
This is awesome but true Toyota fans were already buying and building these things as we knew it was a Jdm prado with a v8. I really hope the Normies don’t drive up the prices on the used gx market.
So true dude. LX's were out of my reach cause of all the soccer moms who want a full size SUV to get to starbucks so I bought the GX. With this kind of press I'm worried the same will happen to the GX. 4 runners, Tacoma's and Tundra's are already pricey as it is even used.
Tommy, you almost slipped up what channel you were on at the end there. We would have all been so confused if you said classics, or truck, or car, or off road, instead of “now.” Thank you for not messing up. (Please note sarcasm).
It is a Toyota Prado under the skin, so not surprising. I've seen quite a few of the earlier GX470s built for off road use, the later 460s always seemed to me not good for any real off roading off the showroom floor because of that massive grill and front bumper and the running boards, they all cut into ground clearance, approach and break over.
Remmeber that the air suspension in the lexus Gx is just in the rear axle the front uses standard coil springs.... the lx570 do have air suspension in all 4 corners
Yeah, and a rear air suspension is probably better suited for the NA overlanding/off-road market anyway, given you can't really get that far from civilization in the US, and it has automatic load-leveling capabilities. Plus I'd trust Lexus air springs, especially new from the factory
I believe the LC uses hydraulic suspension to lift all 4 corners. I have the Sequoia Platinum with rear air bags and it is amazing for trailer towing. It's dead flat when towing!
Tommy there are versions of the GX in the US one with air suspension and one without. Hence the blocked center console switches. If they would have used the GX with the extra goodies the interior would also had additional features.
2:51 Not a delete and not all RX460's come with the adjustable air suspension. It depends on the trim package: "Base" and "Premium - Comfort" are the two models without the air suspension and that is a factory delete which is standard on all of these models. I mean its a start. Lexus could actually go back to the pre facelift with the smaller bumpers for offroad cred. Lexus needs to differentiate the 4x4s styling from the city slickers styling. Everyone wants awesome looking macho truck styling, not a Lexus ES stretched over a big box. Bring back tidier bumpers, easy to remove side steps, locking diffs, boxier aggressive design. The Mercedes G class is unapologetically macho and it sells extremely well. Take a look at 4runners and you'll see a ton of people buy it for being butch. The GX is an offroad weapon so design it to look the part.
CACressida I agree. Whenever I see a GX on a road, I always see a suburban middle age man or woman behind the wheel. I say, I know that thing never seen a dirt in its life.
The 4.6 is what matters to me. Besides, city slickers will buy the off-road version for looks anyways. Either way, I'm in the positive for off-road looks 👍
Land Rovers have big off-road creds, and don’t tell me them British mall crawlers are macho. Clearly Lexus did something right because their current design is the reason why their sales jumped back in 2014. On top of that, like they’ve said, even with the design it really doesn’t affect off-road capabilities to the extent that the majority of owners need. At the end of the day, it’s what’s the actual owners of those GXs want is what matters.

I'd like more information on the build; particularly on the solar panel and the radio setup. I don't expect to see it, but it would be nice to see a build spec sheet or something. I love how cleanly this rig was put together.
They can’t do everything everyone wants. The cost would be even more prohibitive than it is already. Nothing says you, me, whoever can’t put their own light switches there. Now you shared your secret with everyone!! Way to go! Hahaha
It's not a delete, that's just how the base model comes. Premium and luxury build have the extra toggles. But yes, would be nice to see a matching rear locker toggle or light toggles.
Well this is a Luxury Prado. And the Prado share platform with the 4Runner so it always had a lot of Off road capacity. basically the difference is that outside US we can get the Prado with a 4,7 V8, a 4.0 V6 or a 3,0 Turbo Intercooled Diesel and rear and center lockers 😁
David F The barn door hinges on the passenger side to open to the side. The rear window hinges at the top and flips up like a hatch. Perfect for smaller items. Or if you need to you can open the whole door for larger items.
V.C. With a full tank, I have a 400 mile range. If that’s not far enough you could put an auxiliary fuel tank where the spare goes. Or just carry a gas can.
Very nice indeed! A new one is beyond my budget but I can come pretty close by building an earlier one! It’s a nice mild build that would break the bank and I’d have a sweet tow vehicle for my small Airstream.
Regardless of the build, the GX 460 is, even bone stock, a bonafide off road vehicle. Beefed up as the OR is makes it a trail specific vehicle and in my opinion takes away from the OEM'S hidden greatness. Regardless, the GX460 is quite possibly the FJ90 of the 80's
Toyota4Life Ford150 raptor is a pick up truck and it doesn’t compete against the SUVs. It’s rather competitor to the trd pro tundra, ram rebel etc. Also, Toyota philosophy isn’t to thrill you with power and acceleration but rather to be a reliable, long lasting rig with sufficient power delivery for your off road adventures.
Andrew Draxlar I said TOYOTA / Lexus... did you miss where I said Toyota which means the TUNDRA. The next gen TRD PRO trucks need to also be competitive in the Horse Power department that’s the only thing the current trucks are missing. They have everything else down packed
Andrew Draxlar excuse me do you see my user name ? You do not need to tell me anything about Toyota philosophy I am a Toyota enthusiast. There’s was numerous times through Toyota and Lexus history where they thrilled with power and acceleration. LFA. TwinTurbo Supra. V8 ISF. 1999 GS400. 2006 IS350. Even the turbo MR2 was the fastest car in Japan at one point. The LFA held the nur ring track time. The Tundra 5.7 was available with a TRD supercharger that’s gave the tundra 550hp. Please don’t tell me what Toyota. Toyota/Lexus is a jack of all trades
Toyota4Life bro, why aggressive and defensive? Not meant to insult your intelligence but was responding to your comment. You comment was about Toyota/ Lexus SUVs and nothing about a Tundra or Toyotas in general so how would i know what you “meant”. Lastly, picking an anomaly models ain’t enough to prove my statement wrong. If Toyota’s main philosophy is to thrill you with power and speed, they would be the leaders of it. Therefore dudes like you won’t be complaining how underpowered most of their vehicles are compared to the competition.
Man that is my dream car but I do not earn near enough to actually own it, especially with the Patriot Camper , what a great set-up. I am planning on purchasing a solid 2014 to 2016 GX460 soon so I can get that great Lexus brand but unfortunately it will be bone stock !
I am curious as to why Toyota/Lexus didn't keep crawl control to the OR version. Or did the Icon Suspension conversion from bags delete the factor crawl control?
Fix the barn door and i'd buy it, you can't open it when someone parks too close to you from behind, which happens all the time in parking lot, i like to back in.
Sometimes we call them Lazy but when Toyota/Lexus makes up their minds they actually really go all out...Great Job Lexus.

Not as impressed as you with the button delete panels. They could have added buttons for front and rear lights.
Daniel Nelson agreed. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Here they come standard with the V8 and center locker.
I like the concept, but I agree: put in a rear/hatch window in the back, then it’s perfect!
David F The barn door hinges on the passenger side to open to the side. The rear window hinges at the top and flips up like a hatch. Perfect for smaller items. Or if you need to you can open the whole door for larger items.
Where can I buy the OR black and blue logo?
looks sweet, but where can you go with the car given the gas mileage of the 4.6 v8?
Is this body on frame?
Regardless of the build, the GX 460 is, even bone stock, a bonafide off road vehicle. Beefed up as the OR is makes it a trail specific vehicle and in my opinion takes away from the OEM'S hidden greatness. Regardless, the GX460 is quite possibly the FJ90 of the 80's
Toyota / Lexus makes the best SUV.
They just need to make a high powered model to go up against the Ford Raptor.
Imagine if it had the Rc-F engine 🙏🏼
Are you guys going to be able to make a review on the 2020 gx
Man that is my dream car but I do not earn near enough to actually own it, especially with the Patriot Camper , what a great set-up. I am planning on purchasing a solid 2014 to 2016 GX460 soon so I can get that great Lexus brand but unfortunately it will be bone stock !
I think your TFL Pro Land Cruiser had a impact on Lexus lol!! Way to go you guy's!!!! 👍👊
I am curious as to why Toyota/Lexus didn't keep crawl control to the OR version. Or did the Icon Suspension conversion from bags delete the factor crawl control?
I'll take the stock 2020, thank you.
People have been using GXs for off roading for a long time. It's about time Toyota/Lexus payed attention.
Fix the barn door and i'd buy it, you can't open it when someone parks too close to you from behind, which happens all the time in parking lot, i like to back in.
That's what the pop window is for. If you're avoiding a machine like this because of a rear door inconvenience, trucks not for you.
@@Mike-cz2yw you're right, it is not for me, i bought a Land Cruiser instead.
The base model Gx does not come with air suspension so the button blanks are factory not made just for this vehicle.
