I treasure your conversations with these dear older folks who experienced things some of us could never know firsthand! I remember some of these superstitions and some I'm hearing for the first time. I wish they could be here forever to carry on this tradition. So glad you are educating us and carrying on the tradition of handing down our rich history by making these videos! Now they will be recorded for posterity.
Especially if you're throwing it away at night. You have to show manners to the "unseen"...........Also if a woman is on her "monthly" she shouldn't hold babies because it will "mek them belly hurt them". Lawd have mercy!!!
@melanin7977 I just think that was hilarious saying, "Family uno move." One night, I was throwing water outside, but the bathpan was about half with water. I couldn't lift the pan, so I had to use the chimmy to throw the water out. So you know I had to do it a few times. My dear, you should hear me, " Family uno move, family uno move, family uno move." I almost died laughing.
I really enjoy your videos. I once lived and taught in Jamaica and I loved the country and its people. This video is so interesting and certainly helps me understand the older Jamaican generation that passed down these superstitions. Many of these superstitions are similar in other cultures.
Mom you are such an inspiration love all your ideas and all your knowledge God bless you hope the younger generation learn something from your knowledge and experience we no longer communicate with each other every one is just focused on the phone and modern technology thank you.
Really enjoy this. How about turning the broom upside down and sprinkling salt on it if smady at u house and u want dem to leave so u can tell off u pot and share out your food to your family.
More! Please talk about rolling calf, passing babies over a coffin, turning your clothes on the wrong side, wearing one foot of shoes, stepping on a comb, flushing your hair down the toilet, dropping coins when you furn from duppy, Jack Mandorah, eating pepper to avoid duppy, Black Heart man, etc.
The water and sweeping could be based on practical reasons. Sweeping at night could have coins and other valuables could be swept away due to the eyes lessened ability to see at night. So waiting till daylight could reveal ones "luck". Throwing out water at night could also douse the unwitting passerby.
I truly enjoyed this episode. It took me back some years as a young boy growing up in Sandy Point St. Kitts. All I could do is laugh! The old people knew or proclaimed many things that we still don’t have any empirical evidence for; however there are some realities to their sayings. How about wearing one’s clothes on the wrong side? What about walking backwards in the house. Putting the matchstick in the form of a cross on the top of the baby’s head. When your eyelid jumping. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Nice video. I remember there was a song from Lt. Stitchie, back in the day. I think it was named old time teaching. He spoke of a lot of these things. I always taught it was funny.
Yes! I was reminded how we used to make and eat Asham as a child in Jamaica over 50 years ago. And the choking part wasn't any fun. I was longing for Asham, but didn't know where to get corn to be parched, living here in America, and now a (senior citizen) 😂. So I went to an Asian grocery store where I frequently shopped and remembered that they sell roast corn. I bought it and made Asham during COVID. I made it in my blender. I still have some. Delicious!. No choking 😅. I just now saw a recipe with, corn/ peanuts. I've never had that before so I might try it. And being that I stay away from sugar... I'm going to also try it with date sugar. And I guess you can buy Asham on the internet but I would rather make my own. Thank you to the host. Great conversation great information on this video. Years ago my parents and I went to England to visit my uncle whose wife had died. And as a Christian person of which my uncle was as well. My heard mother said to him. Are you still doing that? She asked my uncle why he had all these red clothes and other articles in red, after his wife died. Unfortunately after my mother passed. I did the same thing to Dad. Because my dad would spend the winters with us and return home in the summer, I helped him pack. I saw my father wearing a lot of red garments red pajamas and so on. I too accused.... 😭 Because I was onder the understanding that when you come to Jesus Christ, you no longer believe in all that stuff. My poor dad didn't even think of any of those things. He just liked what he liked. He died in 2017 close to 96 years old. Interestingly enough, I also understand why my mother used to throw salt over her shoulder.🤔 Throughout the years I have watched a lot of wonderful videos from Jamaica. Keep it up. Information is power and with power we gain wisdom. God bless. No judgment.❤
Another great video Kareem, Thank you Teacher Grant! I swear, I dreamt about some Japanese Choy swimming in a little pond when my sister was pregnant. Gone up, Tek een, In the family way, expecting....Does the pumpkin bearing alot has to do with the "How water walk go a pumpkin belly? " What does that mean?, pease explain.
This is Miss GBs response "Thanks for your kind words. "How water walk go a punkin belly" does not refer to pregnancy. The saying refers to a mystery of life, the unknown. Oftentimes used to drive fearing an individual who us about to make a grave mistake or be guilty of some kind of misconduct."
if I dream fish, I can guarantee someone close to me is pregnant. Its also really nice to hear the other superstitions, we need to go back to hearing all these sayings. Give thanks for this show.
And you guys just remind me of Paradise plum. I love those pieces of candy. A family friend used to supply me with icy mint in church when I was a child.
That’s true could be the other way round my mother sent me to worked at a tender age At work I dream about fish I told the helper she said to me mind you know nursery I wonder what why she said it when I go home in my weekend it was my mother I didn’t even knew a man at that time

I hear all about these superstitions when I was a little girl . When you go to the river you make jango bite you on your Brest and it will get big . 😅 I try it but it didn’t work .
Wedding means somebody is going to die. Dreams can be interpreted in number in Drop Hand- a gambling that you buy a number. If you dream see a black man is number 23. I bought 23 and won, but I never won anything again.
If yuh buck yuh toe when yuh going out you will be disappointed. If you forget something at home and turn back to get it, it means bad luck. Dreaming about silver coins and green fruits it means disappointment.

Mum used to say a bag of things she could of wrote a book of sayings, Knife on back edge think it was your moving, the fish thing and baby , if you dream long time dead people think was new death, one that used to scare me was if you see a tape measure hanging on the back of the door was to run duppy and then I see one on our door loool, another one was never you measure measure a person or put new shoes on a bed sign of death and bad luck , anything she dreamt had to have a meaning and I still don’t do do these things or take note lol I don’t know if a day goes by where I don’t think about her and miss her saying these things to me even as a grown man 😢
I never heard of the left hand. And that the belief was that it put strain on your heart. My favorite candy was mint balls. My second favorites candies were Bustamante Jawbone and Paradise Plumb. When i dream about weddings it scares me. Because I know that someone is going to die. Euther a family member or someone that I know. When I dream about funeral, someone is going to get married. This no joke. Some of these old time Jamaican proverbs make sense. And some of the superstition are true 👍. I left yard 51 years ago. This September will make 52 years. I am a patriot. I love, love my island 🏝. However. I missed the jamaica 🇯🇲 of yesteryear. I grew up in a different era. I am Old School 😂🏫. Things and time changes. Still. There is no place like home. My great grand mother told me that when I had to throw out her bath water, I must say, "Family uno move." That is funny.
