  • I remember in my interview with Brent Smith of Shinedown that he was close friends of Sully from Godsmack, and I should give them a listen. And I didn't listen. A lot of time has passed, and I finally decided to take the plunge and hear what I was missing out on. And I was missing out on A LOT!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Godsmack for the first time, performing "I Stand Alone”.

if you're gonna do Godsmack from a vocal perspective, you really oughta listen to "Voodoo".

1998, I was sixteen and in a weird mood, I ripped Voodoo off my CD, extracted the intro part up to "...don't remember why I came" until juuust before the *ting* with whatever software we used like Audacity before Audacity. it's like 17 seconds. I dropped that file in Winamp and listened to it on repeat for four hours while playing through Quake (with the music off and the sound effects low). I thought for sure I would never be able to hear that song again afterwards, but nah, still like it to this day. and had a very memorable gaming experience into the bargain.

My favorite Godsmack song! This was also the theme song to the game Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. It was used pretty frequently and the game conditioned you very early on to run like hell any time you heard this riff, because it meant this monster that pursued you would instantly kill you if you weren't fast enough to escape.

    • @the_kruzdawg

Hi Elizabeth, a huuuge Godsmack fan here. I highly recommend checking out Sully Erna's work outside of the band, it's a lot more diverse and intricate. His performance of 7 Years off the Avalon album would be an amazing place to start and would be a great way for you to not only analize Sully's vocals but also get an introduction into Lisa Guyer who is a phenomenal and a criminally underappreciated singer.
Guys, if anyone wants that, too, please upvote so Elizabeth sees this 😄

I think Voodoo by God Smack is probably the best thematically accurate song I have ever heard. Some music tries to convey some kind of theme with the sound and Voodoo just absolutely nails it. Fun story: my mother in her 50s back 20 years ago wasn't a big fan of my rock taste in music, but Voodoo? She was all about that song.

I know you’re a huge advocate for mental well-being...Godsmack has a song called “ Under your scars” to remind everyone they’re perfectly imperfect. They (Godsmack) and Sully Erna started the “ Scars Foundation” for mental health. That song seems to have a lot of aspects you love as well....piano, orchestra etc...and shows a different side of his vocals. A lot of others are recommending “ Voodoo”...which is also great. I personally would do “ My Light” written about his daughter. It’s his Solo stuff, but showcases a lot of his diversity.

I find Sully often has an almost monotone style, he does accent it, but anytime you hear his voice it is instantly recognizeable as Sully, yet he has an ability to make it so no songs sound alike. If you want to hear more of his singing voice with less grit I would recommend "under your scars by Godsmack" or "7 Years, from Sully Erna's solo album Avalon which also features excellent vocals by Lisa Guyer"

Sully plays several instruments. Guitar, piano, drums. They had a literal 10-minute drum duel on stage at the last show I went to. This song was the encore, and even with only 5000 people in the house we were screaming that chorus louder than they were playing. Fantastic band, fantastic song, and they put on a hell of a show. See them if you get the opportunity.

Finally! Their first 3 albums were the soundtrack of my teen years. I've seen them live 3 times and each show was amazing! Sully is an amazing musician and vocalist. In concert, he comes rolling out on a drum set of his own and will perform with/battle drummer Shannon Larkin(ex drummer Tommy is seen in the I Stand Alone video). This has been named Batalla de los Tambores and is a staple in their live performances. The band does a lot of community work and have also opened a charity called The Scars Foundation to help raise awareness for mental health issues.
To hear a different side of Sully, I highly recommend checking out his solo Avalon album. He brings in Lisa Guyer on vocals as well. The video for the song '7 Years' can be found on his channel. Their voices harmonize perfectly and it is a must listen imo haha!!

8:03 Multi-instrumentalist, yes. If I'm not mistaken, his first big professional step was as the drummer for Meliah Rage. The first Godsmack album was written and performed mostly by him alone. He has musical talent, but that is completely eclipsed by his drive. Godsmack is known for simple melodies and basic aggressive riffs, delivered with that big 90s wall of sound production.
