  • This video will show you how to use Politeness Levels in the Korean language.
Korean society is hierarchical. In Korea, when talking with other people, you need to consider their age and social status.
Depending on how much your interlocutor is younger or older than you, and how much lower or higher his position in society is, you need to use different politeness level (sentence ending variant).

Thank you for the lesson 선생님 . I have a question about the neutral form. Is it use a lot in lyrics ? For example I hear often 보고 싶다 where the -다 form is used, but here it's on a verb and -ㄴ/는 is not present. Does that mean that there is another level of speech or is it just a particular style ?

    • @KOREANFULLCOURSE

      Hello Tiffanie^^
      That's really interesting question.
싶다 is 'to want'. In many languages 'to want' considered as a 'verb', and even in Korean it is used as a 'verb',
BUT actually according to the Korean grammar, 싶다 falls into 'adjective' category. It's an auxilary adjective, same as 싫다 and 않다.
That is why you need to conjugate it as an adjective. 싶다 not 싶는다.
      ---
Also, there is an intereting thing about the verb 않다. It can be an adjective or a verb, depending on what comes before it - verb or adjective.
If a preceding part of speech is a verb, then 않다 need to be treated as a verb as well,
and if the preceding part of speech is an adjective, then 않다 is adjective.
Take a look at these examples (neutral speech level),
      'I don't go'
가지 않는다. (O) 가지 않다 (X)
You need to attach 는 to 않다, because 가다 is a verb, so 않다 is also a verb in this case.
      BUT
      'I don't want to go.'
가고 싶지 않는다 (X) 가고 싶지 않다 (O)
Here we don't use '는' because the preceding part of speech is an adjective 싶다.
So, here 않다 is also an adjective.
These rules are important to know. It will help you with reported speech in the future.
      --
      It was very interesting question^^
