Divine! I had the great joy of meeting this great singer and his lovely wife in a masterclass ( I was only an attendee) in Melbourne some 10? years ago. I will never forget that day!
I love Winterreise and Mr.Hampson's interpretation. The metaphor of the winter and the freezing cold, makes this a symbolic journey. The wayfarer symbolizes all of us, ploughing through the emotions and trouble of our life. We can listen to this Schubertian song cycle with a great pleasure, but we can also meditate on it. Thank you for this valuable video.
Love the Winterreise this is coming from. And love Thomas Hampson since he sang here at San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. Also love his Christmas Album and an opera film Village Romeo and Juliette of Delius.
Quite a lot of portamenti, to my taste. But - typical for Hampson, as I think - it's delivered with such a natural self-confidence that I just - "buy" it! I'm convinced. The greatest baritone I know in present times, I think. And apparently a very intelligent, decent man. I just love him.
At LAST an accompanist worthy of performing this great work with an artist of Mr. Hampson's great sensitivity and refinement. Reminiscent of Fischer-Dieskaus magnificent partnership with the irreplaceable Gerald Moore. Brendel, Perahia, Pollini and Horowitz all missed the mark in the highly specialized field of lieder accompaniment. This was lovely.
too slow, to heavy, its a song about walking and wandering and being away from home by walking and wandering not about lying lacy in front of the tv, eating chips and thinking about how nice it was at home in the country side. More movement, more dynamics would be good. too many chips in here

I love very much Thomas Hampson. He is a beautiful artist and opera singer. And his accompanist - Wolfram Reiger - unsurpassed!!!
His interpretation of music is the best!
Wow.... Is this guy really a baritone??? He is awesome, but sounds like a tenor!
