    I vaguely know precisely one linux user, and it was honestly kinda funny to see their utter disbelief at the concept that one of my reasons for not using linux is I know I simply wouldn't be capable of getting it to run.
    Because my sibling who's actually pretty decent with computers has tried several times and never been able to get any part of any version to work, meanwhile I can barely operate windows.
    Between that and the occasional posts or comments I see about that kinda stuff, it seems pretty clear to me that a lot of dedicated Linux users are in that space opposite to the Dunning-Kruger effect of being so good at something they don't realise there's anything in it to be good at.

      Any operating system 'rots' if you don't understand exactly how everything works, so when you don't know how an operating system works, it seems to break itself too easily. I will admit though that the command line syntax for fixing most Linux problems isn't anywhere near as intuitive as the equivalent in Windows, since with Windows it feels like executing commands whereas on Linux it's usually adding and removing entries from files in obscure folders, which is what both is doing but Windows is just better at.

    Yes, I’m sure your super tuned up baby that you’ve put quite a lot of work into performs a lot better than my totally stock Toyota. Yes I’m sure you’re right that a stick shift can give you better efficiency and control. Unfortunately I just want something to get me to the grocery store with me having to think about it as little as humanly possible. Luckily OP seems to be way on board with that!

      @null5766  Месяц назад +9

      Linux used to be a hobby for me back when I had more free time. I would tinker with more advanced distros like Gentoo that allow for fine-grain control.
      It's a fine distro, but you waste so much time compiling the programs you would normally use; like Firefox. And even then, the speed-up is barely noticeable; if it even exists.
      And in the end, I ended up using it for the same shit I used Windows for.
      Not to say I went back to Windows. I love ease of use, don't get me wrong, but I also love not having a corporation shove shit down my throat without my consent.
      So I installed an easy distro like Pop OS, and now I have the ease of use of Windows with the speed and control of Linux. The most advanced thing I do nowadays is just update my system with the terminal. Otherwise, I'm surfing the internet, gaming, writing; you know, normal shit.

      Totally second the thought about distros. I use Linux both at work and at home and don't plan on ever switching back because it has basically all the functionality I ever needed from Windows without being Windows. I started with Ubuntu and transitioned to PopOS when my partner built me a desktop intended for gaming. The support from Valve recently for running Windows games under Linux has been remarkable. So if you play games I would still encourage you to try Linux.

    With modern high end systems there’s really no point worrying about bloat any more. We aren’t storing our operating system on floppy disks any more (unless you use minuet OS)

      thing is some bloat does take up system resources or affects boot time so those who want to for example game on a pc that aint that good they will want to remove the bloat that runs in the background or is unnecesary if they are low on disk space

    • @FennecTECH
      @FennecTECH 23 дня назад

      @ with modern hardware we have so much resources that we’re getting to the point where bloat doesn’t matter. We have enough CPU and memory that a few extra services doesn’t really make a dent anymore. And disk space is cheap and abundant these days.

      not really. Its a huge business expense to shill out for the extra ram needed to run windows 10/11 when your talking dozens of computers. Used to be that you could basically install a kiosk mode of windows xp that just ran a web browser and that was great, very cheap solution. Now you basically need a full pc for everything.

      well some nerds think that some programs that come preinstalled with distros like ubuntu(canonical spyware) popos(self breaking desktop) and arch are unnecessary and should be deleted. PopOS and Ubuntu come with a shit ton of preinstalled apps that one may not need, because of gnome and the ubuntu debs, PopOS also will have that and Arch is pretty minimal but some neckbeards think systemd is slow af when their thinkpad starts up in 5 seconds compared to the 50 that windows would take

      sudo is the command in linux used to run a command as an administrator. You are a pseudo admin. having it is about a whole extra mb to your install.
