- Michelle Roach bought a used ice-cream van in order to bring cheap, affordable food to Liverpool's struggling communities.

She wanted a vehicle with freezers built in for frozen food, and also something cheerful that was able to break down stigmas around food poverty. Using a '10 items for £5' model, Michelle sources discount food from supermarket surplus and donations. The Guardian's Christopher Cherry follows Michelle and the van on its rounds, with the service struggling to meet overwhelming demand as the cost of living crisis deepens, and the UK's general election fast approaches.

@@QuantumoonI agree with you but that a GoFundMe page requires somebody who can keep an eye on it and monitor it and put the money in and it's not always that easy. A patreon page might work better.
Frankly if a blessing would work, and then I would bless her with winning the UK lotto. Or maybe if someone has already won maybe they would be kind enough to give some of their money to this worthy cause. This will say that I edited it I didn't I use voice to text to correct things and it actually did it for once it doesn't generally work very well I am incomplete quadriplegic whose hands do not know the digits don't work properly.

All MPs could give money and fund 20 of these. Even refuse a payrise. These foodbanks have come in under a conservative govt. Rishis a millionaire and he doesn’t care so is Kier Starmer Labour.
What an absolute angel that woman is. It really gives you some hope and warms your heart that people like these exist, but at the same time makes me so angry that in such a rich country this kind of help is even needed.
Meanwhile supermarkets putting prices up weekly,why don't officers of fair trading fine these thieving bbbs robbing poor folk.
There are two reasons:
1. The cost of pretrial continues to rise. This directly increases the cost of food on every level, tractors cost more to run, making fertilizers cost more, and transporting the food at every level costs more.
2. We are still feeling the effects of global inflation caused by the pandemic. For some reason, all of the world leaders like to lie about this, but you can't increase the global money supplies by between 30-50% over 2 years and not expect to have increased inflation over the next ten years. This is why the central banks or minting institutions are working to enact deflationary pressure hoping to slow the rate of inflation. The problem is deflationary measures tend to hurt the middle and lower-income classes.

So alot of people who are overweight are also "starving" for nutrition.

I left the UK ten years ago. I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be this bad now.
I just looked up profitable companies, in 2023. Both sainabury’s and tesco’s are top 10. So are their CEOs struggling? Clearly making hefty profits and charging the everyday people to make up for the different and rise of prices. It’s terrible. This service is amazing and it needs to be shared

Nah. They are work shy. Liverpool is one of the cheapest cities in the UK for housing, yet benefit from having the same minimum wage as everywhere else more expensive to live. Anybody working full time can get by without food banks in Liverpool.

Great team work, well done! In Torbay, Devon there is a YUM (you + us = more) social supermarket bus that does a very similar thing. This area has very high levels of poverty and it breaks my heart that people are going hungry.
If the politicians had a lot less money, they wouldn't be so far removed.😅
Impossible for a poor worker to sit in parliment (they have to go to work) this is by design.
How much of their vast wealth has the 'ROYAL FAMILY' contributed to the poor? Nothing. Yet you all applaud when they parade by.
They have supported amazing charity efforts of every kind, including providing job and life training for impoverished youth for decades.

This shouldn't have to exist - But thank you, you help people like me every day, it's a shambles that food banks and things like this need to be done in this country, but I'm so thankful for people like you, I'm going to be volunteering to support our own community kitchen in my town - The work that these people do has helped me countless times, and I may not be able to give what little money I have, but in spite of my conditions, I can volunteer to sort boxes and help with donations that those who can and are kind enough to give do - We've all been for lack of a better term, royally shafted by this Tory government - We may not have money, but what a lot of us do have to give back is time to help support the communities that help support us - If you don't have the means to donate money or food, donate some time, even if it's just to chat with your neighbour and ask how they are, chat with people on the street outside, or in your garden, heaven knows we could all do with that little gab from time to time, check in on your neighbours, ask if they need anything, help your elderly neighbour with her garden, we get through best when we get through together.

Poverty in the UK is different from the rest of Europe. Even in the poorest European countries, the situation many find themselves in the UK is rare. Shocking!

This people are brilliant! Nobody really wants charity per se. Providing cheap food, like 10 items for £5 … that is helping people in more than one way, since it maintains dignity. And there’s kind of a fun, happy feeling with those vans too.

welcome to the uk. Most managers are rude & unapproachable. Ours is so out of touch we dont even have a box of cereal in the staff room. Can garentee atleast 50% of us are struggling but management dont care. No extra wages on bank holidays either

This is a great idea, well done to everyone involved. However, we should all start growing some of our own food. Economic conditions are unlikely to improve for many years, and with the further threat of conflict on the continent, we are entering challenging times.

Bravo to Ms. Michelle for providing this needed service. Pray for her continued success and service to the communities in need, as many don't have transport to go and buy groceries or visit food banks. She and others like her are doing better than the multi-million pound official charities who are supposed to be doing this work with peoples monetary donations.
Why are people living in poverty? Because they keep voting for the uniparty. That's why.
You can get food the same day from these people . Liverpool citizen support scheme you have to wait 5 days to find out if you're accepted for an award .

The country was founded by the ruling classes ruling over the lower class - this includes extreme exploitation and it can still be felt today. There needs to be a more fair distribution of wealth a better standard of living for all across the board. It's only because of London that the UK is richer than it seems. The gap in the UK between the top richest city and the 2nd richest is one of the largest in Europe, it does a lot of the heavy lifting.
