The greatest defensive performance ever that didn't result in a win. To not even crack 6 points is an abomination.
Well the Rams played pretty good defense too.
@@stevespud2707 Yeah, but the Bucs offense was horrible. So I guess there's that. They scored just 270 points during the year, almost half of what the Rams scored.
The early 2000's Dolphins defense with Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor used to routinely put up good games but ya kno, Jay Fielder.
@@stevespud2707 Stopping Shawn King was a bit easier than stopping Warner, Faulk and Bruce in a dome.
umm they did crack 6 points dummy
Man if that '99 Bucs team had an offense (or maybe just a top QB from that season), they'd be champions. Holding THAT Rams offense to just 9 points was a mightily impressive feat
Shouldn’t have even been there. Redskins should have beat them a week earlier if they didn’t muff the snap on the game winning field goal
@@jasonmckinney9938too bad
@@jasonmckinney9938the Redskins would've gotten smoked lmao
@@jasonmckinney9938it was over 50 yards with over 1buck 30 left and would have put them up by 2. I hear ya though. Harder 2 go up n down the field back then. Especially with King as the QB.
I say this as an unbiased Steelers fan who had no rooting interest in this game, Pittsburgh was terrible during this season. The Bucs defense was so great in 1999 that they really didn’t need a top flight quarterback or an elite offense, just a run of the mill competent offense would have done the job. The Bucs defense played as close to a perfect game as possible, forced three turnovers and held one of the best offenses in NFL history to 11 points, with the Tampa Bay offense gifting the Rams a safety, so essentially they only conceded 9 points. Everyone remembers the Bert Emanuel play but if you dig a little deeper, the true story is revealed. In this game, FOUR TIMES the Bucs offense got to start a drive in the Rams side of the field because of how their defense was able to force turnovers and shut down the Greatest Show on Turf. And the results of those four drives? Field goal, punt, punt, interception. To not be able to punch it into the end zone one time is shameful with that kind of advantage in field position. Shaun King was dreadful. One of the most anemic offensive performances ever in a conference championship game. If I’m a Bucs defensive player at the end of that game, I’m absolutely livid at the offense.
Hall of Famers:
Rams: Dick Vermeil (Head Coach), Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Orlando Pace
Buccaneers: Tony Dungy (Head Coach), Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, John Lynch, Ronde Barber
Though Tampa lost that was one of the greatest defensive performances I have watched
The league has been changing what a catch is for almost 25 years. Unbelievable. That WAS a catch!

It's crazy how good the Bucs D was. If only they had an offense, they most likely win the Super bowl.
You'll never see defenses like this again the bucks today wouldn't even be this good cuz they wouldn't be allowed to tackle like that.....
Ya I think they had dilfer dimes on the bench
True because their defense was ranked 3rd and their offense 27th.
They wasn't beating the Titans in that superbowl
Well they won it in 2002
What a defensive battle this was. If Bucs just had a competent offense, they coulda been a dominant force in the league.

Here's the thing: At the time the rules were that if the ball hits the ground, it's automatically incomplete. Thats why they changed the rules in the off-season. If the ruling by the official was wrong, then there would be no need to change the rule. Madden (RIP) probably made it more controversial then it should have been made by incorrectly saying it was a completion (which the next year it would be).
NFL would later admit that the officials got it wrong.
Im not sure the ball even touched the ground it was so close. Did they have to follow the rule of indisputable video evidence back then or was it more up to the officials discretion?

Also that Bert Emanuel rule catch isn't talked about enough smh

Almost as bad as the Calvin Johnson catch that time vs the bears a few years ago ...
Dez and Bert Emmanuel are the 2 worst non catch calls in history
Yea but that Bert Emanuel call resulted in the nfl officially changing the rule about the ball touching the floor. I mean, obviously as a Bucs fan I’d have rather had the catch. But it’s not like it wasn’t addressed.
That interception at 8:32 was absolutely horrendous. Shaun King was just not at the level of an NFL starting quarterback. With that brilliant defense along with Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott running the ball, if Tampa Bay had at least a serviceable quarterback who could come in and manage the game (Mark Brunell, Brian Griese, Vinny Testaverde, etc.) then they win the Super Bowl that year.
It’s insane how dominant this Tampa Bay defense was. The Bucs made it all the way to the NFC Championship with Shaun fucking King as their quarterback
Thanks for posting. This is a really underrated NFC title game.
Ricky Proehl was such an unsung hero on those Rams teams. He caught everything that was thrown his way, and most of the time he had a defender draped over him.

Emanuel did have control of the ball, but the rules at the time stated that if the ball scrapes or touches the turf, it's ruled a no-catch. It was pretty close. Even if said player appears to maintain possession. They did eventually alter the rule after the season.
It's crazy how time flies..I was just 5 years old when this game was played & Marshall Faulk was my favorite player in the league..but this game looks like it was played a whole lifetime ago.

The 1999 Rams came out nowhere. They had no winning seasons since 1989. Acquired a new quarterback in the 99 offseason who gets hurt in the preseason. Then comes Kurt Warner, an undrafted castoff, leads them to the most team wins in a season with 13. And wins league and Super Bowl MVP.
Truly remarkable season.
not only that but they dominated everyone. Wasnt like some other surprise teams like 01 patriots and others who grinded to close wins. Which is usually the case. Rams were a machine. They put this roster togethor though kind of quietly. Obviously warner but you add faulk and draft holt in one offseason. Bruce and hakim were there . Defense was solid
Yeah... the Rams' success did come out of nowhere. Home of the Arch--- my favorite team since I followed sports . Wonder how they got good outta nowhere
The Rich Brooks Rams D was getting pretty good 96'-98'. Drafting Orlando Pace and getting Faulk set them up. Warner is was what came out of nowhere, but I knew they were going to be pretty good.

I wish this channel published the entire game. This street fight is top three greatest NFL games of all time.
Game would look so different in the modern NFL. Rams attempt a FG on a 4th and 1 from the 27; Bucs punt from the Rams 35. Rams clearly call a timeout with 1 second left in the first half but the Bucs run off the field (lol). And obviously the Emanuel catch.
Those old Rams uniforms were so good looking.

I will always say that the 99 bucs defense is the best defense I've ever seen..
They were better than the 2002 for sure. The 2002 Defense just had a much better offense to help them and not let them Back. The bad offense of the 1999 wore off the defense a lot. Before Gruden got down there the offense was basicaly just Alstott and the kicker

i remember being 5 years old saying daddy didnt he caught the ball.. that bucs team made me fall in love with the game. we deserved 3 rings for that defense
This was one of the best defensive performances I ever saw. When Derrick Brooks hit Torry Holt so hard early in the game (I think it resulted in Holt coughing up blood), it was not going to be a normal game for the Rams. The speed on the Bucs' D made it tough for the GSOT during this game and in a game 2001.
Maybe so, but the Rams defense absolutely SLAMMED King on so many sacks. I bet King was coughing up a lot more than blood after them.
I seriously hope you are not equating 2 time league MVP Kurt Warner with freakin Shaun King. Holding the GSOT to 9 points is a hall of fame achievement where as the Bucs offense was liability in this era.
Finally this was uploaded 🙌🏾
It's interesting how much the officials have been a part of the story for some of the more epic games of the last 20+ years. I wouldn't exactly call that a good thing and sadly the Emanuel rule opened the door to some of the confusion of what is and isn't a catch in the NFL nowadays.
That said, it's always nice to see this game highlighted again. The Bucs defense was OUTSTANDING that day.
1999-2001 Rams defense was incredibly underrated
@Devin Curtis exactly , 1999 and 2001 defenses were good. 2000 was terrible. Rams cleaned house after 2000, only 3 defensive starters were retained.

@@Riles31521999 Defense was more than good enough they were literally the 4 ranked defense. The last two playoff games shows that
It is funny as a Rams fan I wouldn't have put the - symbol. 1999 was a great defense and 2001 was a great defense. 2000 defense was horrible and the offense put up crazy numbers just to win the games until Warner got hurt.
As a lifelong Bucs fan, this still hurts to watch. I was devastated when I watched this game as a kid. That Bucs D was incredible though.
Hate them for beating my Titans that year, but unbelievable performance by Kurt and the Greatest Show on Turf in a Cinderella year. Much respect!!
These playoff games are awesome NFL Throwback
The thing about the Bert Emanuel play I never understand is, even if he catches it, it is still 3rd and 11 and it's not like the Bucs had some high powered offense. The idea that they would've converted that against that very underrated Rams defense is suspect.
I do agree to an extent, whether the Bucs scored a touchdown or not is a completely different argument, however by that point, the Rams defense was completely exhausted and were on their heels, so if Tampa Bay could’ve gotten the ball into a 1st and goal situation, they maybe could’ve punched it in with Alstott. I had no faith in Shaun King being able to throw a touchdown pass in this situation, I believe he had thrown a grand total of 7 all season.
How about the 4th and 3 delay of game play that was milliseconds bad? At minimum there inside the 20 with a good chance of 3 pts and up 4. Took some serious home cooking to give the 1 hit wonder greatest show on turf there only ring.
@@AshleySmith19912 That's because Shaun King played 5 1/2 games that season. with 7 TD's, in 5 1/2 games, that's not a fair point to judge. lol (not arguing your other points.)

This Bucs defense put forth one of the greatest team defensive performances in NFL playoff history, holding one of the greatest offensive teams in NFL history to 11 points on there home field and greatest element to perform there juggernaut offense (Turf). A shame that there offense couldn't even spot them a TD.
On a sidenote, Marshall Faulk had one of the greatest but rather forgotten RB seasons in NFL history in 99, becoming the 2nd player in NFL history to rush and receive for over 1,000 yards (Only 3 RB's have ever done this, Roger Craig, Faulk and Mccaffrey). I would put Faulk's Ram 3 year stretch (99-01) up against any all-time RB's greatest 3 year stretch. He was IMO the best overall player in the NFL during this 3 year run.
Possibly the best D ever against possibly the most under appreciated D ever. The greatest show on turf was a complete team.
Brooks cracked Holts ribs on one of those hits. He was spitting up blood. Props to him tho he came back and played. One thing i see watching this game is not only the rule change for the Bert catch but also the delay of game. You get a full second almost two now a days to snap it after the clock hits zero.

That being said this is still my 2nd favorite Bucs game of all time, my 1st being the whooping they put on the Eagles to advance to the Super Bowl; the Super Bowl is my 3rd favorite game. This one was just insane, #1 Defense vs. the #1 Offense... The Greatest Show on Turf slowed down to 11 points.... Just a brilliant game...As far as that Emanuel catch, it was good.... The powers that be didn't want two defensive power houses in the Super Bowl, a 6 point Super Bowl would have messed up the ratings for sure.

I was in my 20s when this game was played and rooted for Shaun King because he was a Black QB. I realize now that Shaun King single handily cost the Bucs this game.
Emmanual clearly caught it but Bucs fans act like they were going to score…. Not a fan of either team and the Bucs offense was putrid, were gifted great field position and created turnovers and the offense couldn’t do 💩…. My rule of thumb is this: If you have a top 5 offense or defense, then the other side of the ball just has to be average. Your Special Teams have to be good regardless. In the case of the Bucs under Dungy, if our offense was at least average, we would’ve gotten past the Rams and could’ve beat the Titans in the Super Bowl. But that was always Dungy’s Achilles heal when he was coaching our team: he didn’t hold the offense to the same standard as he held the Defense. Warren Sapp even said he felt like it was a disservice to the Defense due to the ridiculously high standard Dungy held them to. John Lynch said that there was tension because of the double standard, and Derrick Brooks said that the team wasn’t really investing much to improve the offense. As a lifelong diehard Bucs fan, I respect Dungy for turning our team around and making us competitive and respected, at the same time his philosophy was what forced the issue for the Glazers to fire him, and to make the drastic move they made to bring in Gruden. It had to be done, or else while we would’ve had more playoff appearances under Dungy, it’s hard to believe that we would’ve won a Super Bowl if Dungy was never fired. After all, in the last 2 Playoff games we had with Dungy, the Eagles handled us well and made it look easy (21-3 in 2000, 31-9 in 2001)
I think u could argue this was the best offense (99 Rams) and best defense (99 Buccaneers) of all time.

The thing I loved about this game was during the week, EEVVVEEVVVERRRYONE didn't think the bucs stood a chance.
