- “My movie is sort of a letter to myself to kind of encourage myself to be more unapologetically my authentic self, without shame.” Writer and director of the new film “Babygirl,” Halina Reijn sits down with Desi Lydic to discuss the questions she set out to explore through the film about shame, sexuality, and authenticity, subverting the tropes of the erotic thriller genre, and how her background as an actress informs her directing. #DailyShow #HalinaReijn #Babygirl

I encounterd Halina Reijn at a hamburger stand in Amsterdam once. Although I was already waiting in line when she arrived, the hamburger guy wanted to give her priority, but she refused and gently waited her turn. So, I think she has a great personality and I love to see that's she is so succesful. Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@grovervansesamstraat Is she that famous that a Hamburger guy would recognise her?
in the Netherlands, yes
@rouschkavanderplank2396 I thought she mostly did arty stuff like acting in Ibsen plays and so on. You must have cultured hamburger guys. 😭
@@sandorx4haha she is also on a lot of Dutch talkshows, or she used to be. She also had roles in a couple of major Dutch movies 🤗
@elnouk I thought those Dutch films were quite arty as well, like Warmerdam's Grimm.
Love Desi's relaxed style. Would love to see her doing more of these interviews. It's obvious Desi's not trying too hard, and I'm here for it. This is what we call a conversation. Nothing forced or awkward about it.
I think it helps that she's actually into the subject. Clearly she saw the film, talked to Halina and had stuff to ask. So often these interviews don't go anywhere because the interviewer is not truly interested, but just needs to fill time.
Halina Reijn is such a inspiring woman! Changing careers to being a director and being unapologetically herself. Even daring to discover the themes of sexuality and male and female dynamics. ❤ WOW!!
In the off-chance that Americans will read this comment I'll reply in english but yeah, this movie is very much a callback to 70's and 80's Dutch cinema where eroticism was par for the course. We steered away from it, no idea why but you can see the movie industry, even the American industry being more ready for it now. So here's hoping we will make this genre our own again!
Ik vond het zo surreal en geweldig dat een nummer van (ook) natte visstick in een film is geëindigd die de golden globes heeft gehaald. Natte visstick. Meme techno core. Echt geweldig hahaha
@@gerbrandlubI haven’t seen it yet but Paul Verhoeven is the first thing that pops up in my mind 😂 Us Dutchies are just eh…well very direct, let’s put it that way 😂
@@gerbrandlubThere's a translation button under a comment in a foreign language so everybody can read it
I almost never watch the interviews (not a regular viewer), but suddenly I see Halina on a big show outside the Netherlands, how nice! I did not watch the movie, but here on television she has been on many shows already. I am happy for her that she has this big succes. I always like when people from our little country are getting big abroad.
On a side note. I really like Desi as a presenter in the Daily Show. I like all the presenters, but she has something special next to Jon. For me it fits her like a glove and she is expressive with her face. And I must say that now I am seeing her from the side, it still looks very expressive. I think that is impressive ;). Now I want to pay more attention to people that are filmed sideways, see if someone else has that.
Ssme here, 'discovered' her when I started to follow the elections in the USA, she is hilarious!
Hey so MORE OF THIS PLEASE. Educated, sophisticated convos between women ✅ Give us this at least!
I love the Dutch hierarchy-averse way of working Halina mentioned! 😂
It's very much a staple of our culture. Hierarchy is only there for mandate, and responsibility. But socially, any CEO is at the same level as any employee. If an administrative clerk wants to talk to the CEO, that person better listen and be prepared for a conversation :D.
@@gerbrandlub Heerlijk hè 😊
is this a dutch thing or a halina thing, though? with the news of ivo van hove and matthijs van nieuwkerk... she explicitly says in this interview that she wanted to direct in a different way than she had experienced herself as an actor.
Ivo van Hove is not Dutch. When i worked as a secretary, long ago, there was hierarchy. I would not expect it in the actors world. It is for a reason that how Van Nieuwkerk worked was such a big scandal. Live television was sometimes used as an excuse though .@@marisophi
@@marisophi There are exceptions of course but it is definitely a Dutch thing (read the section "power distance" on the comparison tool of The Culture Factor)
Halina is a big name as an actress and artist in the Netherlans. As big as Nicole Kidman is in Hollywood. What she did in Hollywood is incredible, but also very on brand, diving in the deep and making it succeed thru hard work. Incredible woman! Great interview!
Ja psies ❤
That last question--and the response!--were absolutely awesome!
Fun fact: she and Carice Van Houten (Melisandre from Game of Thrones) are best friends and run a podcast together.
what fun? A toenail runs a podcast. Ad
More importantly, they have a production company together called Man Up! That was the major producer of Reijn's first film, Instinct, with Carice in the main role. That is still her best film. More daring than Babygirl even though Man Up co-produced the film.
@sandorx4 that production company is out of business I remembered
@@lidewijvos They were one of the co-producers of Babygirl so they are still in business.
@sandorx4 but without Carice van Houten. She stepped out.
Love Desi's interviewing skills!!! So engaging, funny, and researched!
Superb interview! Great stuff from both host and guest, wow.
Zo goed om te zien dat de pre order voor deze film in nederland through the roof gaan .
Super verdiend !!!!!!!!!
Ze is mijn held, ik houd van haar filmkeuzes!
excellent film, all the actors were fantastic, and, as alluded to here, the film does not go where so many have gone before. refreshing.
alluded to? Mayhaps the rest of your comment would indicate allude
Halina Reijn Is one brilliant woman! I plan to see her movie---haven't been in a theater in more than 5 years.
so like 5 years 4 months?
You'll love the movie. The cinematographer is also Dutch and amazing in this movie
ugh proud Dutchie here!! great interview! Wished it would have premiered at Berlinale actually but oh well.. GO GO GO HALINAAAAA!!! MORE MORE MORE!!
She seems fantastic. I'm also trying to learn how to unapologetically be my authentic self as a middle aged man. Cheers!
Me too! It's not an easy task.

Vandaag de film gezien in Amsterdam. Ik vond het n fantastische film. Het was doodstil in de zaal. Ik heb als een vd weinigen ook echt moeten lachen. Halina, ik ben echt trots op jouw geweldige prestatie. ❤
Well Halina says she is from Amsterdam because the audiance know Amsterdam (where she lived when she started acting.) But she came from Wildervank (part of Veendam), where I lived half my life. So I have seen her several times, when she still was unknown. I'have never talked to her (she was about 10 years younger) Maybe I said hello when cycling by. And now look at her shining! Yes I'm proud of her, coming from the same village.
Great interview with a fantastic woman by another fascinating woman. Thank you ladies.
what? your comment is oddly sexist. Bot
Desi, you are a breath of fresh air.
I love Desi and I also had to laugh when Halina correctly states that the milk caused her to be "nauseated" and Desi seems to diplomatically correct her to the wrong word "nauseous", which Halina then repeats...
It low key reminds of a Simpsons episode when a Dutch man with a thick accent says something in English that causes Marge to giggle and say, " that means something funny in my language", and he (very seriously) says, "Yes, I know. I'm speaking your language to you right now". hahahaah
yes!! thank you! Halina did say it correctly! Nauseated is the feeling of nausea, so feeling sick.. Nauseous is what caused it.. BUT people ( MOSTLY AMERICANS ) always used Nauseous instead of Nauseated, so much that Merriam-Webster Dictionary has updated their definition of nauseous!!! So it's both correct now.. in the Netherlands we get taught British English. This is why Americans correct this probably.. ( but there are several versions of the English language not just American English ;-) )
@@folkgirrl Yep, I was coming here to say the same. 'Nauseous' is an adjective which describes something, while 'nauseated' is a verb, ie: what our early grammar lessons (in Australia) described as 'a doing word'. Although the root word 'nausea' is the same, 'nauseous' and 'nauseated' are not used the same way. 'Nauseous' is an adjective, so it describes a characteristic or attribute of something, so "The bad smell made me feel nauseous", while 'nauseated' is a verb, which describes an action or instance/example of something. So, if you feel sick to your stomach (say, after drinking a glass of milk) you feel nauseated.
Halina said it correctly. Sadly Americans have had it wrong for so long that it ends up becoming a variant that's accepted even though it's wrong. Not accepted by me however. Sorry America 😂
@folkgirrl thank you! I'm Canadian, but one of the things that drives me mad is when people say nauseous when they mean nauseated! I try not to correct people, but it really irritates me! 😅
Not unusual to see the Dutch speaking better English than native speakers.
@@maitooscents ah my bad I did read that wrong!! I will edit it and crawl away now!! :/
Hearing her accent I was like what weird country is she from? She's from my country lol 😂
She has an accent I didn't, couldn't, identify. Dutch.
Lol, I know the feeling, I often have it as well.
I loved to hear her making the same mistakes as most of us Dutch do. Like "love" with a Dutch "oh". Or the struggle with "unapologetic" 😅 unapologetic herself ❤
Je kende Halina Reijn nog niet ??
I saw her as ophelia when she was 17 years old she was fantastic even then, fearless!!! I met her on the street days later and told her!
Another great interview with Halina. Is it her? Is it the interviewers? I guess it’s the collaboration.
a great interview from both sides.. bedankt!
5:43 the flat hierarchy (even) in the professional environment is very Dutch in general.
Great interview!
Desi is excellent all the time. Halina Reijn gives an interesting and professional interview.
Halina was a regular co-host on a Dutch tv-show, so she has some experience from “the other side of the table”.
I didn't know her, now I love her though.
Great! I believe people from the Netherlands have a beautiful accent and more understanding of languages, as they usually speak several languages.
True. Most of us speak English and many speak a bit of German and French as well
Dutch is the closest language compared to English (spoken by at least a million people). That being said, there are many other countries within the Europe where more people speak more than one language (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark). Worldwide, the most multilingual countries are India, Singapore, Luxembourg and South Africa.
Really? My native language is Dutch because I’m Belgian (Flemish), and I really don’t like the ‘Dutch Dutch’ accent in English. Some Flemish people also have a strong accent, but many have a way more neutral or hardly noticeable accent when they speak English, especially the younger generations.
@@naylas3908belgians always dislike Dutch accents from the Netherlands that is if they like us Dutchies at all
We just ignore it like you would a whining child
@@naylas3908that’s just what you think because you’re Flemish. I have the other way around with Flemish accents because I’m Dutch.
Born in Amsterdam in 76 in andijk parents are from small towns in Noord-Holland en Gelderland. A new Amsterdammer… lovely Dutch accent her English has :)
Nice to see she went for her passion directing. Go Halina ❤
"We need more directors like you here in Hollywood".... But she's not american. It's a problem of mentality. In the US, if there's for example a car unfortunately misplaced in the frame of the camera, the movie director is gonna start shouting on his first assistant, himself gonna shout on the second assistant, etc... everybody trying to affirm his autority in the hierachy while , at the same time, trying to escape it's responsabilities. Like Poelvoorde ( famous belgian actor) explained very well, here we don't do that. We do a very different way : if there is a car misplaced in the frame of the camera, we .... move the car.
Quick sidenote: in the US they are not permitted to move the car. Only the one person that has been designated to perform that job can do it. Union rules.

Authenticity is the height of living, iI'm glad she's embracing that and give that gift to the world
Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten are both Dutch = The Netherlands ❤ and we support them 💪🏼
She is very articulate. She didn't say 'uh' or hesitate once.

Jéééé, go Halina! Je verdient alle succes! 😘
You rock Desi 👍😎✊
Strong Dutch woman !!!
O , dat is ze zeker !!
So proud of Halina ❤
The pronunciation of Halina of the word 'love' is somewhat weird/interesting... I blame Robert ten Brink... 😆😄😁😉
How did she say it ?
It's always the Dutch being most critical about the way other Dutch speak English. Halina was awesome, articulate and eloquent!
LOL
Kan je even meelopen naar de bus?
Go Halina!! You're such an inspiration ❤

💚Halina Reijn reminds me of a joke my German friends tell:
Q: What do you call someone who speaks multiple languages?
A: Multilingual
Q: What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
A: Bilingual
Q: What do you call someone who speaks one language?
A: American
Or English, or Australian…
1 language is French.
0 languages is American.
Halina Reijn is amazing ❣️🙏🏻✨
I love how she always seems to glow. Love her. Great actress and director (no doubt, have yet to watch any of her movies). I'm glad that we finally have a female feminist Dutch director making waves in the US/abroad after the great but blatantly malegazey Paul Verhoevens and Jan De Bonts of yore.
I loved Bodies, Bodies, Bodies but Babygirl was a miss for me. But I’m still looking forward to what Halina does next
Halina! Stoer, respect! 💪🎉
Desi is a fantastic interviewer because she is a fantastic human being.
Whow, what a great person Halina is///...
She'll do better ❤ than all of the before mentioned.

What was the call out of Bret Ratner?
Why? i just haven’t seen it
Yes, I heard that, about Brett. So he's not very level with actors? Being bossy on the set, perhaps? It's probably insecurity. I too wonder what caused Desi to tell on him...

Dutch television once had a interview with this lady in her own home and they wanted to check her fridge for what she eats on a daily base when they pulled open the freezer they found a frozen bananna in there that's where i know her from 😊

So cool. It's nice to see that Melisandre can direct as well.
Ehm different actress. You are thinking about Carice van Houten.
Don’t worry they kinda look like each other and are best friends in real life as well
Oopsie, but also Carice (Melisandre) is a multitalent. I know she writes and produces next to her acting and I would not be surprised if she also starts directing soon. But this is all Halina.
Does Desi think that milk makes everyone sick?
Most likely yes. It is a little weird bot that we drink lactose from another resident on Sol III. We ferment cow baby milk into cheese. That's a little unique to humans. Bot
I think just the thought of drinking milk after alcohol or sodas is nauseating, but maybe I’m the outlier here.
