    Replacing your defense minister with a civilian who basically has no prior military experience, right after opening a new front in Kharkiv?

    • @mrbad3036

      To be fair, I don't think even a civilian can do worse than Shoigu.

    • @MetallicReg
      @MetallicReg 24 дня назад +80

      1. They are both civilians. This position needs much more economic handling and less military experience that is handled by his advisors. Russia clearly sees it as a long term conflict.
      2. This is the best possible moment to sort the personnel. They waited for a new election period + full initiative of the military. You never want to change such when your moral is low - like Ukraine did.

  • @DrGrove
    @DrGrove 24 дня назад +92

    The role of Defense Minister of Russia is more of a Logistics manager role than anything else, Shoigu spent the past 2+ years visiting arms factories and rarely if ever visited the front, so it makes sense to replace him with someone with a massive economic background if you want your country to enter into a war economy phase.

    • @catdogmousecheese
      @catdogmousecheese 24 дня назад +2

      Yeah, but shouldn't the defense minister's focus be on, I don't know, winning the war instead of worrying about the financial bottom line?

    • @DrGrove
      @DrGrove 24 дня назад +4

      @@catdogmousecheese It's good for someone in such a position to have enough economic awareness to not bankrupt the nation by a series of wrong decisions. It has become kind of a meme at this point to see Shoigu only visiting arms factories throughout Russia rather than seeing him on the front and this is because his tenure has prioritized an increase in production of upgrades for tanks such as T-72s and T-90s while also prioritizing production on more experimental but now proven platforms such as the Lancet and Geran-2 which has helped Russia put down many Leopard 2's and recently Abrams. When you compare the cost of a Lancet drone to a tank like the M1A1 Abrams, it is a no-brainer to see who is winning thus far in the war of attrition.

    • @Kardia_of_Rhodes
      @Kardia_of_Rhodes 24 дня назад

      @@DrGrove At the same time though, a person with no military experience will apply the right mindset to the wrong lessons. Upgrading tanks is all well and good, but tanks don't win wars. Air power wins wars, and judging by the recent "modifications" Russia has been making to their tanks, I'd say they're in dire need of a defense minister that understands the critical need for air supremacy on a modern battlefield.
      Also a war of attrition is the last thing Russia needs right now given its population demographic crisis.

  • @giantWario
    @giantWario 24 дня назад +38

    People in the comments have no idea what a defense minister is huh? Defense ministers are in charge of logistics, they have nothing to do with battle plans or leading the troops. In most countries the defense ministers are civilians, it's only a tradition to have military officers be the defense minister in the US and UK for some reason.
    Having said that, Shoigu was incompetent either way even if he didn't actually need a military background. That's exactly why this is scary for Ukraine, it's hard to see how someone else could do worse than he did.

He was the second most powerful after Putin, and now the paranoid baby man in charge is getting rid of even his close allies. Hope the others see what's happening and realize that he'll come for them sooner or later...

      Well Patrushev's son got promoted so it evens it out. Patrushev is older than Putin so it makes sense. Doesn't mean he won't benefit from it as his son clearly did.

      @kindlingking 24 дня назад

      @@manana1444 my point still stands. Wars are profitable. And if you manage to minimise or completely avoid collateral damage, they're just the best for economic growth. After all USA managed to greatly benefit from both WW1 and WW2.

    • @manana1444
      @manana1444 23 дня назад

      @@kindlingking Again, wars are only profitable when you are the one supplying the warring states and at most fighting in a limited manner yourself. Britain and France went almost bankrupt after the two world wars which sped up their empires being dismantled. Russia might not be in that bad of a situation as Ukraine, but there are still Russian citizens being killed and industry bombed. This really just points to how lucky the US is with their geography.

    • @kindlingking
      @kindlingking 23 дня назад

      @@manana1444 exactly - when you can minimise the damage and maximise the benefit. But you don't have to be a bystander for that. All russian losses and economic damage from ukrainian attacks are rather negligent, especially in comparison to all the benefits fully running MIC can provide. From factories, to new job vacancies, to rejuvenated money flow in key economic sectors - there's a reason why US is so fond of it.
      Either way we're getting pretty far from the original point, which honestly doesn't warrant any serious conversations we're currently giving it.

      The defence minister oversees logistics, he isn’t the one doing the battle plans those are the generals.

  • @gideonhorwitz9434
    @gideonhorwitz9434 24 дня назад

    Shoigu was a fake dress toy solder
    I did some research into his background Shoigu was a civilian contractor before entering putins inner circle no prior military experience never did time in the red army no officer training which Gerasimov at least has no of his medals or decorations are from the soviet era they are all contemporary which Putin has lavished in him.
    Yet somehow he was placed as minister of defense and made general of the army only one rank way from marshal of the Russian federation is baffling when you still had the last generation of soviet era officers who were trained had combat experience in say Afghanistan or Chechnya who were passed up.
    Why it’s simple and complex question Putins Russia is a security state unlike in the USSR the political elite do not stem from the military or the party apparatus but rather in a close cliché of the remaining Oligarchs from the 90s Former KGB officers (like Putin) in charge of the FSB and Putin allies bureaucrats/politicians from St Petersburg he took to Moscow when Putin became president.
    The only institution of the state that could pose a challenge was the military since 2000 Putin has been gutting the Russian MOD by putting his political allies as minister of defense where always a civilians instead of a military men. As part of the military “modernization” of the mid 2000s the amount of officer courses were cut down the handling of army logistics was contracted out to a civilian company which resulted in the Modern Russian army that has invaded lacking adequate numbers of trained officers or NcOs resulting in poor leadership or whole battalions just surrendering when their officers get killed cause is no one left to take charge.
    All of this was done under Shoigus watch
