Huge to see The Daily Show reaching the masses with this - educating on the whitewashing and appropriation. Honor & celebrate the roots! Also, Do or Die for life :p
To the contemporary DJs in the underground electronic music culture of the US, this hasn’t been forgotten at all. These scenes continue in new forms, and carry this legacy forward. I know Roy only meditates and eats spinach in front of his therapist nowadays, but come enjoy with us anytime, Roy!
I try to explain this exact history to younger folk when I speak about house music. Not gonna lie, I'm extremely evangelistic about people knowing the precise history of house and techno and its disco roots. Thank you for putting this together!
@@wemadeitpodcast l don't know there are so many. We need to include Detroit in the history of House music. We have had clubs and DJ's since the early 80s playing this music. We still have festivals for House and Electro or Techno music now
It's amazing how, we ,as South Africans hopped into the disco genre and moved to house gracefully as also an escape from Apartheid in the 80's and 90's. It was revolutionary
The segment of beyond the scenes is excellent. I enjoyed it immensely. Craig and Derek did an excellent job on the history of House music. Kudos to them. It brought me way back. ❤️👍👏
House music did not get its name from the Warehouse in Chicago, although that is where it started. It comes from the kids there who would request the music and EQ acrobatics that certain DJs were coming up with. "Play the house music!" meant the same as requesting a restaurant's "house wine" or "house dressing". Fun Fact #2: The Warehouse wasn't even called that until later. It was called U.S. Studios. I know, I was there.
WBMX and WGCI propelled House music as a legitimate new form of music, and delighted Chicago with its stream of talent! The genre has morphed into sub categories but if you want the authentic House music then listen to the 80’s mixes of WBMX and WGCI. Much love to Derrick Carter who always helped me with my record purchases. A true gentleman and a tremendous talent!
Again, amazing conversation. The only thing that I would add in Craig Seymour's comments on Europe. Is that Europe is often imaged as a white race neutral space in the American imagination. European racial politics led to the erasure of Black and Brown European folks involved in making House music and it also impacts the white washing of the genre as it originated in the US.

This is really true. We have disco to thank for not only EDM but Hip Hop and Rap today. We all need to thank Disco for creating these types of music. Until people had easy access to music production it all became about using old records and the simplest way to do it was using that 4 beat count. That’s why it became so prevalent at the time. After that we started to get breaks, drum n bass, etc.
