My LGS does legacy once a month and they allow 20 proxies to be more inclusive and draw more people in. It has been a godsend, and a complete joy to participate in legacy events at an affordable cost.
@@myanrueller91 exactly! And it has always been a very positive experience and the people there with established decks and no proxies are always excited to play against newer players using all 20. Honestly it has made legacy more affordable than modern at my LGS
I'm getting into Pauper now. The shuffle up and play video got me interested and it turns out some of my friend at the LGS also started playing it. I just ordered my first deck today :D
Welcome to the format Im sure you will enjoy yourself. Rn I think meta is very healthy and diverse you cam play multiple of decks really. For example I play jund midrange cascade, which technically isnt a tier 1 meta deck, but I have consistent results with it, many 1st places on fnms, I almost always qualify for top 8 on the bigger ones. If you are less of a competitive player then pauper is also for you. The amount of brewing you can do is enormous and you can find some really niche and powerful cards that dont see much play. Also the fact you can relatively easily afford multiple different decks and have fun with variety is also great both for casual players and comprtitve ones Welcome to pauper!
The main roadblocks to getting into older formats are multicoloured lands. They're all way too expensive. You have common alternatives in lands that enter tapped, but those make your deck significantly slower.
@@ozmond If they're spending that kind of money on "stupid commander decks" then they probably enjoy playing those decks. Yes, I could butcher several of my commander decks and piece together something mostly playable in Modern, but like, I play those decks, those cards are already spoken for.

Good point about the card rental services on MTGO! Seems like that'd be a good way to try out a bunch of decks rather than spending a fortune on one and getting bored with it after a few months. If only the client wasn't so abysmally clunky and looking like something out of the 90s!
Yes, it *would* be nice if they updated the interface... for the 5th time now ? (So, not *quite* the 90s, more like the 2010s at this point ?) Also, while Arena is better in some aspects, it's way worse in others... (Historic Brawl deckbuilding... X(

@@danacoleman4007 We try to always buy the cards so we aren't using proxies but obviously we can still proxy. But if I don't have to ability to buy a certain card then I won't proxy it, such as the black lotus. It's to expensive for me.
Love goin to my LGS to jam some games. I don't really hang out with many people i met there outside of the store but there is one dude there who shares my first name and we typically wind up getting to top 8 against eachother in most events we play. Whenever we get to top 8 together we have our battle of "Who is the superior of our name?" I still haven't beaten him but it's fun every time. Good video Prof, lookin forward to the next one.
Only ever play standard, because its what is on arena. With the rotation coming up soon been thinking of dipping into Modern. Great timing on the video!

I recently created two Pioneer decks that were a nice low price and fun to play. Problem is finding a LGS that supports it. Most seem to only be doing draft or commander.
Locally we've got a decent commander community, i'd love a bit more competetive but i scratch that itch online. We've had many more people turning up for pioneer than standard which isn't a huge surprise, i really feel that there are a lot of players at least locally who would really benefit from playing more limited. Love prerelease weekend and sitting down to a draft pod is a unique experience every time. Edit: best experience i had recently was playing pioneer rakdos cat oven against a new player, i apologised before the game and promised to take it slow and explain the effects and triggers. At the end when there were mayhem devils and copies and multiple ovens and treasures reducing the opponent from 14 to 0 at instant speed they were in love, i suspect i have a mirror match next time.
Every time I think I finally want to try Magic, I watch one of these videos and change my mind. I will never have the money to play seriously and there's no way I'm "renting" cards.
You can play mtga, a free online version where it's very much possible to play one of the best decks if you are willing to put in the time. Drafting once per day/ two days for free is very much possible ( deppenig in your skill ofcourse) If you are purely interested in paper: Pauper is format that has some very affordable very competitive decks.
Recently I started getting into Pioneer, after seeing that there's a UB control list using Lutri as companion. You're playing singleton built around a legendary creature, it's basically commander but 1v1 - and UB control is my favorite archetype in any format, anyways. Can only reccommend, it's actually really interesting and refreshing, where commander games tend to take way too long.
Ive had an idea for a new format! It’d be called Limited Constructed. It’s the basic 1v1 play using only cards from a single set to make a 40 card deck with the usual 4 card maximum for any one card.
It reminds me of Block Constructed, when 3 consecutive sets where on the same plane. I've actually played games like that with a friend with only one set (60 cards though), sadly, it gets boring quite quickly... :(
Love this video as a Commander player looking into Pauper. After watching the Shuffle up with Spice8Rack I immediately wanted the goblin deck. Goblins are my Nostalgia tribe, can't wait to play a 1v1 game with them again.
I went to pauper at my lgs yesterday w a borrowed deck and it was a blast! I got rolled haha but had a blast. I even played against the deck I want to build and got some good exp watching their play
I think the hardest obstacle I’ve run into is trying to gauge or accrue interest in starting a format. Most of the people at my lgs are content with commander only, and any time I mention something like Pioneer or Canlander I get blank stares or subject changes. I may just proxy up a few decks and bring them, see if anyone is willing to try out a game or two. That’s what I had to do when I built my commander cube at least.
Tectonic (IE changing the 'landscape' up): 100 card commander legal deck or 60card singleton w/ leader: Variation: - Every time somebody plays a fetchland (dual fetch, basic evolv wilds style) they exile top card of library: when they crack the fetch to get one from deck, they exile the fetch and after the library shuffle (from fetching the new land) they again exile top card again. Cards exiled this way are permanently exiled. - Cards with cascade/dredge/ETB can be used but ---Cascade: They always have summoning sickness (can't have haste), and when they go into grave, they get a grave counter (+1). they can't be reanimated/etc until that counter is removed: they can remove the counter at your next turn's End Step. -- Dredge: same as Cascade. -- ETB: If the permanent has an ETB effect AND would receive haste, you have to choose one or the other. -- Legends Rule still applies: no copies of legendary cards of any sort (no, the 2nd doesn't come in as 'nonlegendary'). Also, only 1 of each named planeswalkers (1 copy of a 'Jace', no Mind Sculptor and Memory Adept at same time). For planeswakers no choosing which lives/dies, the one on BF stays until it dies, then new Jace can come out. -- No cards referencing cards 'outside the game' (that oldschool cycle that did that) and the newer ones. Sideboard is only for sideboarding between matches. -- 'Universal' banlist: Basically a Commander, Historic, Standard, Vintage/Legacy list: plus the most OP stuff from modern. (The point of the format is to 'mix things up' while still making it fun).

Owning currently 33 EDH decks, move to pauper was slow. Currently have one deck, which while managing to have perfect mana, perfect curve, still dies to my friend's mono-b zombie deck where he literally just cycles some god damn dude who deals damage equal to the number of zombies in play.
Silly me, I thought this was going to be tips on creating a new format. I was thinking of trying to do a sort of jumpstart-commander hybrid because commander is my favourite format.

Despite all its flaws, Arena, with all those multiplayer queues automatically matchmaked to one form of (in)competence or another (MTGO might have *some* of that too ?), is pretty amazing to just go in blind to discover a format ! (Except maybe for the non-"quick" drafts, because of the short time limit to pick cards, so it's better to train on "quick" draft first.)
For me, everybody seems like a professional and speaks about different cards, combos and formats in such a way that I feel like I’m too far behind to catch up. There are just too many cards and too much information for me to take in to “catch up” to those players. I’m still trying though.

D&T? Stoneforge, Solitude, Karakas, and Wasteland can easily be the proxies.

The pauper goblin combo (as it's called by pauper players moggwarts) can also pull off a turn 3 win, that's not restricted to just modern goblins!

I misunderstood the title and assumed this was going to be a video about how to invent your own format.
Step one: come up with a catchy name.
Step twp: figure out what rules would make sense with that name.

At least your lgs will do draft outside of a prerelease. None of our players like draft or sealed so i don't get to very often.

Highly recommend using TableTop Simulator to test decks and formats with friends. Cheap upfront cost to be able to play whatever MTG cards you want.

Playing the game your own way is also an option. You and a friend can come up with your own formats ^^ rules, deck building restrictions, etc

Despite all its flaws, Arena, with all those multiplayer queues automatically matchmaked to one form of (in)competence or another (MTGO might have *some* of that too ?), is pretty amazing to just go in blind to discover a format ! (Except maybe for the non-"quick" drafts, because of the short time limit to pick cards, so it's better to train on "quick" draft first.)

I might rename the video to "Getting Into a New Format" since I clicked curious about why you were creating a new format.
For me, everybody seems like a professional and speaks about different cards, combos and formats in such a way that I feel like I’m too far behind to catch up. There are just too many cards and too much information for me to take in to “catch up” to those players. I’m still trying though.
