- One of the first skills you’re introduced to when studying Quantity Surveying, is how to perform a construction takeoff. But what is a takeoff? What purpose does it serve? And, does it still have a place in modern day quantity surveying with the introduction of new 3D rendering technologies such as BIM? In this video we will aim to address all of these questions giving you a basic understanding of this possibly ancient practice.

Would you guys be interested in a ‘how to’ series on takeoffs?
Thanks for your question Metroun!
I do takeoffs using scale drawings on adobe acrobat for highway refurbishments.
I would be interested in these types of takeoffs.
It does the job quite well as long as the designer uses colours and clarity. Some designers make QS life strenuous due to over complicating unnecessarily xx
Yes please
Yes please please please do a video! Good quality ones are rare to find on RUclips! Please fill the demand
yes please and also how to use BIM for take off
Yes please.
Hi, this video was hugely helpful! little thing but I think it's a common and irritating misconception, especially if you work in this field. BIM is not 'a software', it's a methodology. BIM encompasses the whole of the project lifecycle and is a way of facilitating information between departments, subcontractors, clients... any party involved. Certain software is more BIM Inclined, for example Revit has much more collaborative features than AutoCAD. But there's no 'BIM Software'. Apologies as it may seem like pedantry but these type of approaches can cause a lot of havoc.
Hi Joseph, we’re glad you found the video useful. Thank you for the clarification surrounding BIM!
Thank you! Love this channel.
I remember you did a video on road construction. The Highways industry is getting huge investments, it would be nice to have an insight of what QS’s do working in that sector.
Hi Real Videos, that’s a great idea! This is certainly a video we can make, thank you for recommending.
Are you currently working within the highways sector yourself?
@@Metroun yes 🙈
Enjoyed❤
We’re glad! Thank you for commenting.
Are there limitations of being able to work as a QS in a different Country from the one you actually got your degree from? if so what are they?
Many employers prefer the degree to be accredited by a recognised body like RICS. Studying in a country other than the one you plan on working in, means your degree may not have the preferred accreditation. We recommend you do your own research into the accreditations your degree has and what the requirements are for the country you plan to work in.
The video was knowledgeable. thanks. could you please give examples while explaining?
Hi Junior Tapi, we actually plan on releasing a more in-depth takeoff series in the future where we’ll be able to give specific real world examples. This video is more of a brief overview.
Thanks for watching!
@@Metroun sounds great! looking forward to it.
So are you doing a take off series?
We’re planing to have a takeoff series on this channel by early next year
Hi there, would it be much harder for a graduate to gain employment with only doing 3 years in college as opposed to 4?
Hi Damo, would you mind expanding on this a little further? Are you referring to a 4 year course with a years placement? Where is it you’re looking to study? I.e, what country? And what course is it you’re planing on studying?
@@Metroun Thank you for getting back to me, I am currently doing my bachelor's in Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics, in Ireland. Which is a 3 year-long degree with the possibility of doing a one-year add-on later. The course in which I am now includes 9 months of work placement. I am just wondering, would it be difficult to gain employment in the UK with only doing the 3 years in college as opposed to doing the 4. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.
Hi Damo, apologies as we’re UK based it’s hard to comment on your specific degree. In the UK you usually either enrol onto a 3-year full time bachelors degree or a 5-year part time bachelors degree.
What extra qualification does this additional year add-on provide?
I wish I could partner with someone to create a machine that makes a hologram of the building then project the total cost it will take to do the project, any altercations made will adjust the cost in relation to that days price of goods. But only a licensed QS can use this machine. It will be patented strictly.
That would be great!
cubit estimating comes close
You obviously don't know the first thing about value engineering if you use a BoQ to carry it out.
In the video we emphasise that a BoQ is used to establish a project price. This price is often broken down by labour, equipment, and materials. Having a project price broken down this way, and linked to a BoQ, is helpful in establishing the value of each activity.
What's your definition of value engineering and when should it be carried out?@@Metroun
RICS states, both VM and VE encourage the project team to reconsider the assumptions that are made during design and construction in search of more cost-effective ways of achieving the desired outcomes. There are opportunities to apply VM and VE throughout the design and construction process... In the UK, it is generally accepted that VM takes place during the earlier stages of a project and that, once designs and specifications have been developed, the same process becomes VE.
