- Dan Cruickshank reaches the Westminster Clock Tower containing the bell called Big Ben. Apart from being part of one of Britains iconic monuments, Dan explains what a Victorian achievement they really are. This is the final part.
gobsmackingly fantastic,totaly priceless,truly wonderful
£2.5 million in the 1850s would be the equivalent of £220 million (adjusting for inflation) today.
Went to see it last year for Remembrance Sunday.

Wonderful, aside televised events there. I had never put the entire building into perspective. Thank you for uploading. In this day and time, such beauty could not be reproduced. Not simply at the original cost of adjusted for inflation. Many of the skilled tradesmen are not available to do this type of work now.

What a wonderful feature! I believe the actual tower was named St. Stephens tower although there's debate that it was known by other names; but it was officially renamed Elizabeth tower to mark the Queens Diamond jubilee.

Now in August 2018 the clock tower is being dismantled and the whole clock tower is being refurbished and renovated. Only one face of the clock tower is available now for the remaining time of refurbishment until 2021.

The price tag for planned refurbishment of the Houses of Parliament, which has been estimated to cost at least £3 billion.
Reports in the Sunday Times reveal the House of Commons commission, chaired by the Speaker John Bercow, is currently investigating the options for the refurbishment, which could begin in 2015.

That is the mechanical part of the clock, the actual chiming bells are further up, when you watch Dan further on in the clip, when he is standing next to Big Ben, the four chiming quarter bells are around it.
These chiming sounds, marks the hour and the 30 example: 12 : 30 am/pm
It may also involve evacuating the Houses of Commons and Lords, and building a replica chamber while the overhaul takes place. One supporter of the plan suggests that if the MPs do not move out the bill could rise to as much as £10 billion.
