Building Evelyn: Lining off planks below magic line, EP15

- With the magic line drawn in and the line off for the topside planking calculated, it's time to take on the tricky area from the magic line down to the keel rebate (Uk) or rabbet (US). Lou Sauzedde and Ken Boyle figure out how they want the planks to run, how wide they are at the sternpost rabbet and how how many stealers are necessary to make up the greater distance below the tuck at the stern.
Phew! A lot of words. It's much easier to watch how it's done. We'll also show a simple trick with a string to get a fair, pleasing curve in these lower planks.

First, unbelievable how fair that hull looks. Second, Lou can visualize planking in three dimensions in a manner that, even after his description of the thought process, is about as mysterious as anything I've ever encountered. And I'm not young.
Looking forward from the stern is an absolute joy. That is such a beautiful shape to the underbody of Evelyn. Lou and Ken are masters at this. Thank you gentlemen for the beauty of your work and the explanation of how you do it.
You explained this methoid very well !
I love the way the planks fan out beautifully.
Herreshoff lines Sausedde STYLE!
“Multiply accuracy” Great principle. Really enjoy seeing the interplay between the precision of strings and battens, and then adjusting by eye as you see a fair curve. It’s the art of craftsmanship.
Lou is certainly the master of lining off.
This is amazing.. The differences between planking and fiberglass......... Two different Worlds.. Thanks for the info..................
Man that a beautiful looking hull. Looking forward to the upper half layout.
So enjoy listening to someone who is a master of his craft. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience Lou.

The long camera shot showing the curvature of the hull is beautiful.
Tom is a tremendous videographer and he has practically no space to work in. I'll make sure he sees the comment. Thanks.
Another wonderful episode Lou. Keep them coming for me mate, you are a true craftsman in the boat building industry!! STATE LAW! as Donny Baker say's 👍
Thanks for showing us the plan and explaining the thought process behind it. I can see where you're headed with it and understand, I believe.
Great art of craftmanship! To mark all the lower lines is wonderful, because we can imagine and see how the planks could run! THANKS!
Lou you are quite a craftsman! Beautiful job.
Hey Lou! Looking great my friend!
the hull is so beautiful
Did anyone notice the absence of a computer or cad, or 3D imaging?
This is how verbalise it Lou style.
Who the heck would ‘downvote’ something like this?
Great stuff lads. Very intriguing and the end result should look superb.
Great, informative video. Evelyn is looking beautiful!
A beautiful build.
Great work captain love your videos
Informative as always. Great work.
That is one beautiful boat!
That is such a gorgeous vessel from this angle ! Thank you!
You sure make it look easy.
If anyone can do it it'll be you. Really interesting and as usual a fantastic video.
What a woman!!
What a wonderful job you guys are doing. I'm still looking for Evelyn's lines; is she or a sister in one of Chapelle's books or in the Alden book? Some of us might want to build a model of Evelyn.
I understand planking is basically magic.
Occurs to me: In all of the Building Evelyn videos I've never seen mention of a ballast keel.
Gents, I have some silicon bronze screws and bolts in various sizes, some new some used but in good shape that I’d like to donate if you’re in need. Can easily drop them off at Ken’s
Are you guys , glassing the hull??
Magic line part 2 or part 3 ??
It's gonna leak through all those nail holes.
Woo wee, you lost me on this one. But looks great.
Good morning....where is your young apprentice today.....?
Hey Lou, can you explain why this boat is getting a second layer of planking?
Silly me.. but why plank a boat that is all ready planked?
Your logo is misleading: there's no BS here! LOL
Yep looking good. And yep very informative. Very informative. But just wondering Lou, do you still repair boats or just build new? These types of videos seem to drone on. Even the new builds seem to skip a lot of the building time. Maybe its just me.
What happened to your female shipwright?
Yes, where's Melissa?
Unfortunately, Melissa can't be here for every shoot, but she'll be back in future videos.
Good morning I trust that you are well.
Do you have an email address that I can contact you on.
Kind regards
Francois
