@@KingWilliam The sheer number of PS3's that would be made, was always going to win it. Remember the PS3 was also heavily marketed as a Media Centre. It had Blu-Ray for games and movies, played the DivX codec, so could play nearly every pirate movie at the time, plug a USB in with your downloaded movies 🤣, damn could link it to the media on your PC on the same network, it had 3D when we had 3DTV's (I still do 🤣), could playing one of the CoD games in 3D I remember. And I had a 360 at launch 🤷, I went to PS3 after the 2nd RROD. Still knew BluRay would win. It couldn't fail and stop being made, it was tied into a 6/7yr console generation. And they owned a movie studio 🤷 HDDVD was DOA as soon as Sony announced it built into the PS3.
This was primarily designed for the original, first run large X360. That's why it looks so big as opposed to the Slim and E model. I have one as well, and painted it dark matte black to match the E finish on my console. Also I put both my Xbox360 E model and this with the flat edge vertical. Also I used the spare USB to hook it up to a gaming PC that doesn't have a drive. Works well for it in DVD mode and can play on PC in HD-DVD mode. You should have seen the frown on Bill Gates face when his darling "HD-DVD" standard not only lost, but lost due to the fact that HD-DVD is LESS copyright protected than its rival Blu Ray and holds 5Gb less per side (standard mode not UHD).
I thought it had a better chance to win since it had the backing of so many companies. I remember when they released this for the 360 and wondered why anyone would want one. DVD's seemed just fine...or course now who buys DVD or Bluray to watch movies. Games I can understand.Poor Bill...……..
@@KingWilliam I buy Blu-rays to watch movies. Much better quality than all of these streaming services. And I can watch it whenever I want without wondering if I hasn't been removed from service.
@@fil1329 Consider this a "Your mileage may vary" But yes, I did get mine to run on my PC. It is backwards DVD and HD-DVD if you have movies. It also is a player only, and I've only tried it with movies, so it may or may not work with DVD ROM or data CD's.
@@KingWilliam I know this is 3 years late, but here's the condensed story about Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD. During the PS3/XBOX360 era, Sony put ALL of its eggs on its new console with the bleeding edge BD ROM drive at the time. All of the major studios were in for the new format except TWO. 20th Century Fox and Paramount. They were originally in for the HD-DVD format and with a bit of "persuasion" and a huge backroom payout from Sony to these companies, FOX caved in and went with Sony and Paramount made a deal to actually for a while, allow it's movies to be on BOTH HD-DVD and BD ROM formats. That's why you see so many Paramount movies in HD-DVD. It was basically to appease XBOX HD-DVD purchasers and companies who created HD-DVD players and also keep Microsoft from losing so much for the rival format. I could have imagined the Class Action suits for having bought an HD-DVD player. Only to have nothing to play. It was a desperate, last ditch effort by Sony to save itself as the BD ROM drive was losing them huge money as it was the most expensive part of the PS3. It saved Sony as they slightly edged out Microsoft in sales. But the question I always had was "Why didn't Microsoft just offer HD-DVD games for it's gamers who chose to buy it"? It could have given them their own proprietary format for games going forward, improved the player over time, and still been a rival to Sony, as Paramount DID support HD-DVD movies. Seems they pulled the plug too early from panic.
Great review my man. I have the same player and I really like it, the only thing that stinks is it does not upscale DVDs. I do recommend a Toshiba A2, XA2 or A35 if you really want to get into HD-DVD collecting/usage. They also have excellent upscaling DVD capabilities, even compared to today's players.
It's a interesting piece of history. I wanted one when they came out but was waiting until they finalized a standard. Too bad HDDVD didn't win. I may check out the Toshiba but still like the Xbox drive. :)
@@KingWilliam I believe it did upscale DVD but only if hooked up via HDMI or VGA at least per wiki. It was also limited to 1080i when using component cables. You needed to use the HDMI or VGA to get 1080p movie playback.
@@KingWilliam It absolutely is. I absolutely relish the thinking I get when I use this product. It's a piece of history, and it deserves its place in that beautiful technology Museum.

HD DVD is the only format in which I have a copy of Animal House and Blues Brothers. I am not going to buy either in BluRay, so the HD DVD player stays. Just gotta go out to the garage and find the old Xbox 360 and then dig in the closet for the HD DVD player when I want to watch them which is not for awhile now.
I’m looking into getting a HD DVD Drive for my Xbox 360 Slim Console. I want to place the HD DVD Drive on the other side of my Entertainment Center. Would a USB Extension cable from my Xbox 360 into the USB Cable of the HD DVD Drive, allow it to work? I wonder if anyone has tried that.
@@KingWilliam it works well enough. I didn't even know that it existed until I saw it online for free. The lady who gave it to me was surprised that anyone even replied ot the advert.
As soon as the PS3 was announced with a BluRay drive, the format war was ended.
Millions of PS3's was far too much of a jump start to overcome
That surely killed HD-DVD. Couldn't beat the price of the PS3 compared to a bluray or hd-dvd drive alione.

does it give out full HD 1080p resolution?
