This version of friend- blew my mind open in high school. My friends and I called this song ‘slow friend’ and would play it at the peaks of our lsd trips.
Every note of Keith’s piano solo is burned into my brain like splashing rainbow colored water.

My first Dead show was at The Uptown Theatre in Chicago. I was a senior in high school 78-79.
When the band started into FOTD I didn't recognize it and my friend turned to me and shouted, "This is Friend of the Devil!" I couldn't believe it and I was floored by the ballad. It was a great moment.

I remember that era, Jerry going grey, shows opening with pure white stage lights. War's Low Rider playing over the P.A.during intermission. Heady times indeed.

Wasn't there, but it sounds good. Kinda steady and slow.
To my personal liking this version is the best among all possible, the one which I heard the first time. It is from "pure Jerry" series. It sounds amazing, almost studio-like.

Tell me again how much sleep I'm getting tonight. But yes its a family trait on both sides of my family to be insomniacs apparently. My dad was always lurking when I went to use the only toilet in the house, in his chair next to the TV, half asleep- then my Mom has also taken it up too in her old age. So they gave me and my brother a double dose of alcoholism as wells as insomnia. Great.
