      I agree, and it takes courage to take on a project like this. My uncle had one of these when I was a kid (I am 57 now), no idea of the year but it was blue, like the blue reply button to the right here where I am writing. I am so curious about when pieces will be welded in and so forth. To see van getting back to its own self again. :) Excellent videos by the way.

    Buy a lot of big cardboard sheets. Bend, shape and cut them to match the shape of the bus. Duplicate them in sheet metal. Lather, rinse, repeat. Then weld your new custom fabricated VW Bus replica parts together, until you have a complete bus. Then you can remove the VIN number plate on the original bus, and swap it over. I say all this with huge respect for your passion and your tenacity. But there is precious little metal on that original VW Bus that can be saved, from what I see. If you prove me wrong, I shall admit it publicly and salute you sir. I salute you either way for your efforts and determination thusfar! That motor...amazing you bought it back!

      You need to check out the D3Sshooter channel. He is restoring an extremely rusted WWII vintage Citroen 4 ton truck he has named Old Rusty. That trucks cab was at least as bad as this. He is fabricating all his own replacement body parts, in many cases using CAD (cardboard aided design). Pretty impressive work for someone working out of his home shop with only a combo sheet metal shear/brake/roller, hand tools, and a welder! Shows just what you can do if you really want to.

    ALL of the sheetmetal below the middle of the van will need to be replaced along with the support members... Its a monumental task you are undertaking, emphasis on mental...It can be saved but I hope you can get replacement sheet metal from somewhere. Dont want to kill your enthusiasm but stash the engine and start making a list of sheet goods you need would be my recommendation. You will have to weld the body together with trusses first so it does not move when you remove supports and rusties sheet metal skin and flooring.

    Hi CT, Well, today you exposed the truth on the body LOL. Not to worry....I've seen a lot worse condition buses brought back to life!!! There are plenty of aftermarket panels out there to repair your bus. I definitely think that you should invest the time into repairing as much of the body as you're able to. I definitely think that you should take the engine all the way down just to make sure. I remember watching a video of a type 3 that was completely gone and brought back to life. They used a rotisserie style rack to rotate the body around. "Rusty" WILL live!!!😁👍🤘

    To be honest, you seem committed to this bus so, I wouldn't bother with the motor right now, I would tuck it under the bench and forget it for now then put a plan together for rust repair; first I would finalize my expectations then prioritize where to start. I guess I would start with the roof and work my way down, then the cab area and work towards the back of the van. It could be done with a lot of patch panels & fabrication and look for used parts on the internet & locally, especially if you could cut out sections of another bus and install on yours. Working on the motor right now is pointless right now, say you get it cleaned up and running on the stand/bench then it's gonna gonna sit for a awhile and it will need to be gone through again so, I wouldn't bother with it right now.You got your hands full with body work....very full. good luck

      Sorry, I would do the opposite. Sort the mechanicals first, get them in sane working condition, not blueprinted. Then do the moving parts, doors, hoods, etc. A way of doing "small" things first, see some result, and not get tired of the project. Then do the front bottom, this will be a tough cookie and require many hours. It will put the bus in a precariously running condition, which will encourage you to go further. The midship bottom and engine bay will be easier. I fear the roof will need complete replacement, that the sheet is worn too thin. I would seek replacement before you start on the rest. In what concerns economics, if you count your hours this will certainly not pay off. For me the hours would be fun, not commercial. That's why I would avoid taking up the huge jobs first, months of work with no result are professional, not fun. Take a look at the channel of Paulão funileiro in Brazil, he just finished doing pretty much the same job on a 6 door. Videos are in Portugese, but you will like what you see. I live in Europe and am a native Brazilian, if I can be of any assistance with translations or parts sourcing, I will gladly try to help. I'm subscribed and following, wish you luck !

    CT glad to see the fire extinguisher on the floor . As for the bus it’s a big undertaking a huge undertaking..... my suggestion to you is one piece at a time... one part at a time.. one section at a time,, but the most important thing.... Is just as you build the house level square and plum. Get the bus level in the garage floor...Then brace the inside before you start looking door gaps look at door alignments take painters tape and put it from one door to the panel so when you’re wiggling and cutting... it with give a idea if the doors dropped.... You need to watch a lot of videos of guys who are doing things with these buses..... but if you don’t catch it can you start driving it......my own personal believe would be it might crack in half... I think you can do it slow and steady but once again level square and plum or you won’t have anything when you’re done but a pile of steel to go to the scrap yard and a lot of wasted time by trade I am a carpenter and I always buy the worst house in the best neighborhood and all my friends laugh at me..... but I’m a saver anybody can build something new with fresh steel Freshwood it takes an artist to stick something that is cheap ithe dumpster.... or cheating and scrap yard to make a beautiful again but that’s me and that’s who I am I would get it level on the garage floor and I’d probably start in front and work my way back don’t bite off more than you can chew or you’ll get very discouraged one side at a time and finish it with you wanted to rust or tobe with the patina or you might want to spray it with the black primer gray primer but I put the whole bus back together she’s quite a gem take care JUNKMANDO

If not, make her safe enough to take a drive down to the beach and enjoy her (him) for a year or so. that will give you the motivation to push on through the restoration. Hello CT! It has quite a lot of rust but it's not as bad as it looks. There is good metal where you can attach new sheet metal. Plan carefully where and how you start to repair it. Don't tear too much open at a time! Do it a bit at a time, there's no hurry. Don't worry, you can easily repair it :)
    In my opinion, it is best to open the engine at this point, so you can check the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings so you can be sure of what it is.
    good luck to the project, you just do a little at a time so you won't get bored with it and we get a lot of good videos hehe :)

      Skillz and time and probably a fair bit of money should be right. What do ya think?

  •  3 года назад

    Dear Sir,
    After all the work and skills you've put in this car and going to put in to this car, the moment people (and you, yourself) are noticing the result of the work, is when the body of the car is shining, like in the time it was bought. That's the quintessence of a restoration. So after all the work you've done, give yourself the pleasure of a total restore of the body, because only then you can say the project was a complete succes. Keeping it rusty is not going to give the ultimate pleasure of seeing Rusty in a shining condition again.
    This said, as an non technical man, i can imagine this will cost you a lot of time and work.
    With Kind Regards,
    Michel F. van den Brun
    The Netherlands

    You people think this bus is bad, you need to check out the D3Sshooter channel for his restoration of a WWII vintage Citroen 4 ton truck! And he’s doing all the bodywork with all handmade parts. No aftermarket metal available at all. The only special tool he has is a sheet metal combo machine (shear/brake/roller). Very impressive work!

    There are some pitted rust that's going to be fun working with. The roof looks like a challenge. It he other parts are normal. I might consider a swapping the roof. There is allot of parts I would not consider repairing. Cut and replace with re production parts. I've been caught before spending 100 to save 10. These are just my opinions.

    • @VWLifeVW
      @VWLifeVW 5 лет назад +1

      I almost have to agree with Military Museum on this one. Sometimes patching I'm spending time to repair a part is harder and more expensive in the long run than just replacing it. The roofer example they now sell. But again that's a big project

    • @Military-Museum-LP
      @Military-Museum-LP 5 лет назад +2

      I guess it all depends on your budget. I do see more man hours than I see parts cost. To 90% of the people she's a scraper. I'm one of the 10% who would take the extra time to save her. Rust can be tackled. The pitting can not with allot of filler.
      I'm slow in my projects but to me this looks like good one to 2 year project. Depending on your time and budget. I wish I lived closer I would give you a hand.

But that's part of the fun isn't it?

    • @Military-Museum-LP
      @Military-Museum-LP 5 лет назад +2

      VW Life I agree 100%. He's taking on a big project with this van. There will be money involved but 10 times plus there will be man hours. Lots of pre fitting and welding. I've changed pans on bugs and even a roof once and I'm here to say the first pan / floor change was a challenge. It was because I tried to save original mounting points and heater ducts. The 2nd time I just cut out everything and started new. I saved months and tons of money. Plus the car turned out better.

    That's one rusty boi. A restoration is doable, but looks like it's going to be a lot of work. I'm actually a little shocked that the engine managed to run so well after seeing all the rust on the body. Where I live, rust claims most older vehicles. If you let a vehicle sit for any length of time exposed, it will rust here. The oldest vehicle I have is 1985 (truck) and the body is pretty rusty in various places. Just got it so haven't had to restore/fix the rust yet but this bus is way rustier than what I'm used to seeing restored. I wish you luck because I want to see this VW back on the road. Subbed, can't wait.

    I don't know where you live, but you may want to look for body parts in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California. We don't have the snow and the salt on the roads that eat cars. I have a eighteen year old Nissan Frontier and not a spot of rust on it. I live in the Dallas Texas area. If we see a car with rust most likely they moved here from the north. Some of the older cars may have a little because people don't keep the weep holes cleaned out. Good luck looking for parts.
