Suko being used as a weapon absolutely killed me 😂
Also terrifying realization, there was one scene where a bunch of female apes are huddling with their children in fear of the Skar King.
Suko is the same color as Skar.
Skar 100% took all the female apes for himself

My favorite thing about this movie was Skar King’s personality. Dude was not a threat by any stretch of the word, but he sure as hell thought like he was. I would compare him to the Showa Era Gigan in terms of character. He hypes himself up, acting like he’s king sh*t, but he has to rely on someone else to do all the heavy lifting. And when that someone else is taken out, he breaks. Except unlike Showa Gigan, he actually tries to continue the fight, and does have moments to hold his own.
    It’s really good.

All sadistic glee when he's outmaneuvering Kong with his speed and acrobatic skill, but the moment he gets a taste of Kong's brute strength, he bows out and calls in Shimo. Kong is an opponent who might make him look bad in front of his apes and he can't have that, can he?

As a casual popcorn flick, it’s great and a lot of fun!!
As a Godzilla movie, I think it’s a bit lackluster. As a kid, I loved the Showa films, and this would’ve been enjoyable to me then. Now as an adult, I much prefer the characterization and storytelling of the Heisei era. It took itself a bit more serious and still gave us great moments that we all enjoyed. KOTM is still my favorite MonsterVerse film, which might be cause it’s closer to how the Heisei films were, and that seemed to have treated Godzilla with enough respect and actually gave a sense of reverence to the Titans.
New Empire and GvK are very much Kong movies with Godzilla thrown in. I’d like to have the MonsterVerse actually focus on Godzilla more and give the HollowEarth a break. Maybe go into man playing god and making something terrifying like how we got Biollante and Destoroyah. Not everything has to be some ancient threat from the Earth’s core
I still find Ghidorah a much more menacing villain than Skar ever was, since we’re told and not shown why we should be concerned. Yeah, he and Shimo beat up Kong, but we know that when Godzilla shows up, it’s a completely different story. If they beat Godzilla up instead, then we’d really picture how much of a threat Skar is. Plus, with all the hype about Shimo, she wasn’t really anything spectacular. She didn’t even have a distinct roar I could hear and ID her with, compared to Skar.

The bald-headed Scar King having Shimo chained and controlled, reminded me of another bald-headed villain having done the same thing - Sokurah the Magician, where he had his dragon chained, and even follow his orders (but Sokurah did not need any device to keep his monster under his control).

THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD! My favorite Ray harryhausen movie! (Rn anyway) Taro the dragon was so cool, Remade from the rhedosaurus model I hear, his fight with the cyclops was legendary. Sokurah was also a very interesting antagonist. Given his first act in the movie actually saved the protagonist but throughout the movie his desire to repossess the lamp grows more and more desperate, usually leading to some weird side shifting antics.

Agreed Omni, eventhough Mothra is great and it's delightful to see her return to the Monsterverse, there is still a small undercurrent of disappointment concerning the removal of Fosphera, kind of wish they still found a way to squeeze in the inclusion of that titan. Nevertheless, the film is still a masterful work of art, that was expertly crafted by Legendary Pictures and Adam Wingard and it most likely will continue to grow in success and accomplishment and I wholeheartedly appreciate that premise coming to fruition. Also other tidbits of the film that I am still deep in thought about are: project powerhouse, the origin of the crystal wielded by Skar king to control Shimo, the apparent mastery of gravity by the hollow earth Iwi tribe etc. Hopefully revelations about these plot elements will materialize soon or at the very least, provide some interesting foundational material for theory crafting.Thank you eternally for the in depth and uncensored (spoilers revealed) movie analysis Omni Viewer!!!

One thing I was surprised is that I didn't expect to see Tiamat in the film, even if she like Scylla got killed by Godzilla. The one thing I do hope for a future movie is show more of those unseen kaiju from Godzilla King of the Monsters 2019, and hope they get more Toho and Peter Jackson Skull Island added in this series soon.
The second is a repeat of what I responded with Dangerville's video:
" Half of me thinks that it's because critics just want films that directly panders to them, like treating everything as high art. Sure I would want the monster movie genre to be taken more seriously. But it wouldn't be special anymore if everything had that high level, that and it come off as a bit pretentious and possibly depressing if there is no escapism. That and unfortunately critics that have a "Bad faith" perspective that ends up making them look more pretentious. Especially those revolve around modern day politics that turned it unnecessarily divisive. Or how a lot of it has a lot of cherry-picking and confirmation bias problems since most people just hear what they want to hear, and don't like their worldviews and tastes questioned. Even if they agree with some points with the critics. (Which I am guilty of I admit, but it's like with everyone else feels, no one likes to be talked down to or seen as an inferior)"

I enjoyed this movie a lot. However I do think I'd write a lot of it differently especially Godzilla and Shimo. The Kong stuff felt like the strongest already in the film.
Since this is a spoiler video i feel i have free reign to talk about what I would change.
    1. Godzillas role: simply put in the first quater or half of the film we would see more of him being the equalizer but I wouldn't have him kill any of the first few titans and he would fight more of them overall because of a change I'd make to Skar King. As the film progresses and Godzilla puts together what is going on and that he is being challenged by Skar King, Godzilla will end up playing a hero role.
    2. Skar King: The film links him to Godzillas past more than Kong and I'd keep rolling with that. Skar King would somehow wake up titans on the surface to cause trouble for Godzilla essentially toying with Godzilla and wearing him down. As Skar King seeks to either breach the surface and challenge Godzilla, or bring Godzilla to Hollow Earth where Skar King has the advantage. Godzilla would deal with these titans and slowly begin putting together whats happening. As Kong flees his initial fight with Skar King and Shimo, Skar king will let out an alpha call fully alerting Godzilla who has past memories of nearly being killed by the Skar King and his army. So Godzilla who is already tired from all these titan fights is now angry and a little afraid so he goes to the nuclear facility to recharge to eventually go challenge tiamat for her domain. Again Godzilla wont kill Tiamat. Tiamat will be smart enough to notice Godzilla is charging and let go avoiding the blast. Luring her into a false sense of security Godzilla then rushes her grabbing her head and knocking her unconscious before tossing her up on the top of the ice. He'll then enter her lair as usual.
    3. Shimo: The leak of a flashback to Shimo freezing ghidorah was never in the final film. I'd change that and show at some point likely when scar king does his alpha call. That Godzilla will have this flashback to fighting Ghidorah in ancient times and nearly losing before Shimo comes to aid him. Allying herself with Godzilla. Attempting to give Godzilla a motivation the audience can understand and maybe empathize with. Besides Godzilla being big monster who fights other monsters.
    4. Mothra: Her role will be not only an ally to Godzilla but to Kong. Kong and Mothra will be having their stand at the Iwi city in Hollow Earth against Skar King, Shimo and his advance party. Kong won't go to the surface as he doesnt have time and can't leave Mothra on her own. The humans will still say something like "Godzilla and Kong are territorial, Godzilla won't come down here unless Kong brings him" or something like that. While we the audience are shown something different, Godzilla making his way to Egypt looking for a way into Hollow Earth. The rematch will be cut because while it did serve its purpose in the film it does feel kinda unnecessary. This will hopefully show the audience that Godzilla has more things he values than just protecting Earth or his title. That humans still don't fully understand Godzilla and how intelligent he is.
    5. The Hollow Earth Battle: In a perfect world I'd change a few things up including the score. For Godzilla portaling in I'd use Bear McCreary opening motif from "Old Rivals" with the dark mood and ambience showing Kong and Mothra on the back foot. While the loud blare signaling Godzillas portal in. With the transition to Godzillas theme as he rises from the dirt not charging right away. There would be a shot to the humans in shock and surprise that Godzilla came down on his own. Kong look surprised as well. Mothra would look like she knew that this would happen. Shimo would pause in confusion. The lesser apes would recoil back in fear. While Skar King would smirk in amusement that his foe had come to him. He would look at Godzilla who is just standing off at first daring anyone to make a move. Again Skar King would grin look directly into Godzillas eyes and use the crystal to command Shimo. Godzilla seeing this would roar in anger and begin charging. Catching up to the scene quickly where him and Kong will run together. The humans plan with the gravity inversion would go off and the battle would begin. Godzilla gunning for Skar King who continues to taunt him by leaping off of shimo whom he had pointed the crystal at Godzilla so she would attack him. Actively mentally toying with Godzilla as Godzilla finds himself having to do combat with an old friend while Skar King goes for Kong.
Godzilla not wanting to hurt Shimo too badly tries to mostly push her away still gunning for Skar King. Some lesser apes try to attack Godzilla and he swats them aside with his tail impaling one of them with the tail spike. Before orienting himself in midair off a rock and launching himself at an unsuspecting Skar King who is about to deal a decisive blow to Kong. Leading to Skar King getting socked square in the chest with the iconic Godzilla Flying Drop Kick. Shimo would still attempt to freeze Godzilla and Mothra would save him. The fight then plays out mostly the same with the titans falling through the portals but Godzilla falls through a different portal than the others. Shimo would fall in a little later than Kong and Skar King. Once Mothra safely recovers the humans she then heads towards the portal to join Kong for the final battle.
    6. The final battle in Rio: The Skar King arrives on the Rio beach first. Giving a haughty laugh as he achieved his goal of reaching the surface. He then spots the tiny humans down at his feet grins, roars at them and begins his slaughter, swinging his whip, crushing humans under his hands and feet. As he begins to move towards the city Kong appears and socks him in the face with the Beast Glove knocking out Skar Kings tooth and mocks the Skar King with a smirk. The proceed to fight a bit with Kong being able to match Skar King. We cut for a bit to see some humans pointing at Kong as he protects them these humans then begin cheering for Kong as we get back to the action. Shimo will have arrived by now and whipped Kong across the city away from Skar King who commands her to begin freezing the sky and city like in the film. After that sequence Kong begins to get double teamed when Mothra arrives and begins lighting attempting to distract shimo while protecting humans as much as she can. Kong and Skar Kings battle starts tearing up the city, shimo clips one of Mothra wings sending her down and goes to blast a downed Kong whose being pinned by skar king as kong tries to hold him off. When shimo blast is about to be unleashed theres a flash of pinkish purple that knocks her down. Some humans get up off the ground one of them pointing towards the frozen sea as bear McCreary opening motif from the "Battle in Boston" track plays as Godzilla erupts from the ice. Incredulously the human who was pointing shouts "IT'S GODZILLA!!!" as Godzilla roars in anger fully charged and flared up ready for the battle as his theme song plays.
Godzilla charges from the ice gaining speed as he goes for Skar King again who points the crystal at Godzilla so before Godzilla reaches Kong and Skar king Shimo tackles Godzilla. As the fight continues i want to add one moment that could be memorable. Skar King would out maneuver Godzilla and climb on top of him and turn his head like a turret and points the beam at Kong. I would have end of the fight play out the same.
    7. The Ending: The films ending I will change slightly. In the end Godzilla after seeing Kong has helped him twice now finally puts aside his grudge and acknowledges Kong as an equal. He takes one last look at Shimo then looks to Kong understanding that Shimo won't have to suffer anymore under the protection of Kong and with one last roar turns around and leaves heading back to see. We see Godzilla as he reflects on what has transpired as he swims back towards Rome. Then we see Kong return to the Skar Kings domain as it played out in the movie. Cutting back to Godzilla who arrives at the Collesium groggily pulls himself into the colliseum to curl up, with a sigh or a huff he closes his eyes hoping he can finally sleep. As the credits roll we begin with Godzillas main theme from kotm transitioning to Kongs theme from GvK. As the credits finish the audience gets to hear roars from Godzilla and Kong followed by the text "The End, Thank You For Watching."
An addendum if i didnt explain my changes to the opening scylla battle. Id have Godzilla flare up his energy in an intimidation display and also show him approach from sycllas perspective. Seeing the fear she feels as shes spared once again by Godzilla when he could have easily ended her life. I'd either have Godzilla chuck her back out to sea or let her leave limping away before he goes to sleep in the film.
I know theres a lot more i could change like shimos role, the human story, etc but i feel my biggest issue Godzilla being pretty downplayed in a movie where his name is in the title, is rectified here and i attempted to give him a motivation the audience can relate to or at least understand and empathize with like with Kong. This movie had a lot of potential but felt rushed in places and I just wanted to give my two cents about it.
If I forgot to mention it here I would remove the egypt rematch and take the big fight moves from that fight and add them to the rio fight mainly giving kong the suplex. As funny as it was to see Godzilla do it I think they should have given Kong the suplex maneuver.

Goodness that's a whole lot to dissect but I think there's a lot of good ideas here! Though if there's anything I might disagree with it's the resuse of old rivals. That themes for Godzilla and _King Ghidorah_ that's a level of grudge Godzilla does not share with any other titan. I think one of my gripes with the film I've yet to chew on much was the climax of this film sounding a bit to similar to the GVK's anyhow.

Really though we did just need something sounding more like Godzillas ifukube theme if it was going to have hero Godzilla. I have so many more ideas I'm surprised anyone saw or read them, thank you. @andrewdau1299 Thank you, I've been thinking of different ideas for Skar King as well leaning into a "Titan Hunter" where we'd see him hunting other titans in Hollow Earth or send some of his ape soldiers to the surface to capture and bring titans for him to hunt. It would have to change his motivation from just wanting to reach the surface though because he would clearly have a way to access it. I'm still brainstorming since I don't know long this refinement process takes and I'd also like to use other more peaceful titans to showcase Godzilla helping other more docile titans like he does in Dominon. We get to see the enforcer side of the King of the Monsters in the movie movie but not really the defender side of Godzilla.

Correction: The studio thinks the audience is dumb & filled the film with countless 'thank you captain obvious' scenes over explaining things that weren't necessary. Especially when we got multiple excellent silent monster scenes that told story & emotion w/o a single word said.
The glove is a self-propelled ambidextrous device that was left in Hollow Earth so that other agencies could not claim it as their own, which auto fitted itself to Kong's right arm. The fluid on the device is more of adrenaline or steroid. Saying it should help with the frostbite is an oversimplification.

I Just don't know. I think I enjoyed the movie over all but By all accounts I do think it's a step down from GVK by a considerable degree.
Given how that was a rematch of the century, perhaps that was a given. But It really felt like This movie could've stood on its own if they made it either a true Kong movie rather than framing them as being equal costars because Godzilla really did feel like a side character to the point where I feel his character is put to question.
Suko was wonderful, and I did end up liking Skar king a lot more as a villain than I thought I would. Still, He pales to the true nemesis dymamic Godzilla has with King ghidorah/mechsgodzilla, and I wasn't fully convinced he was a threat to the whole world, even with shimu who was *very much a let down* both in personality and in design. Like I get she wasn't a real villain but I don't enough was done to really make me feel sorry for her, or if her presence really Justified Godzilla killing a pre established titan that was already rather popular in the fandom for godzilla to get a power up. That first teaser of Skar king sitting before all those titan skulls really did just feel like hyperbole.

Y'know what? As a kaiju fan for almost 50 years, I had a blast with this movie! Lots of monster action, it zipped by and didn't feel like a two hour movie, and one of my favorite things; they focused on five main characters (Jia, Bernie, Dr. Andrews, Trapper and Kong). Contrary to popular critics' opinions, we knew what Kong's motivation was, we knew that Trapper and Dr. Andrews had a history, Jia... if you don't know and appreciate what her character is about, you probably shouldn't be watching this movie. Bernie; the kaiju podcaster thrust into a world that he's been faithful to but never given any validity, and of course Kong, who's sad and alone, while yearning to find anyone of his like. Previous MV movies had so many characters, I couldn't keep up with the wastes of money that were being spent. My favorite MV movie has been Skull Island, until now. I'm usually one to let things simmer and see how they age. Not with this one. It's the best one, to me. So many different titans and all were used effectively. I think bringing Mothra back instead of introducing another new monster aside from Skar King and Shimu was a great idea. Lots of titans had screen time and yet another one in a hero's role would've fallen flat. I think lots of critics and fans still have Minus one hangover. If that movie was released a few months from now, G x K wouldn't have been dismissed as "dumb fun". I could go on for another eight paragraphs but I'll spare all of you. LOVE your videos. Thanks.

Yeah, I hate the blanket statements and lack of argumentation in most reviews.
I woukd argue that if you accept the plot point of the monsters and humans having differing capacities for ESP, most of the would be contrivances actually go away, even the mind control crystal Skar uses against Shimo makes sense in the worldbuilding idea of "these monsters have the capacity for ESP, as do the crystals, and they've been down here long enough to figure it out". Godzilla psychicly sensing stuff of course has been a feature since at least Dominion, but the way he looked at Jia and then Mothra retroactively seems to clarify how he could look at the tiny Mark and Serizawa in KOTM, if he was to some degree sensing intent moreso than seeing (I know he remembers the look of Serizawa in Dominion, but this was clearly a retcon that just fits somewhat decently). Mothra was definitely retconned, but I appreciate how when we last saw her she had become energy and now she materializes out of energy. I think that Trapper being able to fly back and forth in the Hollow Earth in the HEAV as quickly as he did is potentially an issue with the plot that could be either large or small pending a rewatch

“That’s more their loss than ours.” As someone who wanted to like this movie but did not, I can confirm you’re 100% correct! 😭 In fact, I’m a bit jealous of everyone who liked it. 😂
Personally, most of my problems with the film are close to what you described with project powerhouse, things that didn’t make sense to me or weren’t internally consistent. I’m not going to get into most of them here though lol.
It’s funny that you mention the MOGERA vs. SpaceGodzilla fight as when I saw the Zero Gravity sequence I found myself wanting a modern remake of that fight. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer practical effects over CGI, but I’d love to see a longer version of that dogfight with more maneuvers. Basically imagine an intense WW2 dogfight, but with a monster and a Mecha unit. 😂
Mothra vs. Fosphera (did I spell that correctly?) is an interesting case for me. On the one hand, if they had used Fosphera I probably would have labeled her a cheap Mothra rip-off. That being said, I really didn’t like how Mothra was portrayed in the film. I’m not a fan of the MV design and her forced connection with Jia both cheapens Jia’s formerly unique bond with Kong and writes the Shobijin out of the story despite them being set up in KoTM. Worst of all, I just can’t imagine the 90s or 2000s Mothra sitting there flicking her antenna while Godzilla, Kong, and millions of humans are at risk. So honestly I felt like Legendary, at least with this script, was in a lose lose situation with Mothra not acting enough like classic Mothra and Fosphera acting too close to her.
Well, it was certainly interesting to hear your review, and I’m glad that you enjoyed the movie. Hopefully both of us will love whatever G films come next! Have a great day!

The BEAST Glove did come in late into the story when it was "convenient", but at the very least they explained how and why it was created which is arguably an improvement over KOTM just dropping the oxygen destroyer bomb without explanation. And I think the glove was stored in a storage facility inside a mountain in the Hollow Earth, kind of like how Femuto was stored in a nuke storage facility back in G14.
Furthermore, the thing about conveniences is because they are synonymous with contrivances, you can literally call anything in a story a contrivance in the sense that stories are contrived by a writer to get from point A to point B. I've seen bad-faith critics call anything in the story convenient when they're desperate to come up with reasons to criticize a story they hate, but don't have a real argument behind them. Part of approaching stories in good faith is that this is not inherently a bad thing. But what does turn this non-issue into an actual issue comes down to just how probable or improbable it is in addition to whether it was the only thing that could have helped the writer out of a dead end they wrote themselves into.

And for your final statement, the Beast Glove does fit that description of convinience.
It is the only thing tgat helps Kong recover for the final battle and the "explanation" for why it exists is literally one line, similar to the Oxygen Destroyer. At least the Oxygen Destroyer had a thematic purpose and it would make sense in-universe that the military would try to create powerful weapons to combat the Titans, the Beast Glove exists just so our heroes will get out of an inconviniebt situation.
And maybe for toy sales as well.

@@vaggos2003would you also argue the beast glove makes sense in-universe given what happened in GVK? And therefore it didn't come out of nowhere?

@@kasaibouF29 Not 100% sure of that.
GvK does end with Kong being on Hollow Earth and a bunch of Monarch personnel having established a new base to study the Hollow Earth close to Kong who is implied to be OK and even allied with them and it was already established that the Hollow Earth had giant flying snakes that somehow almost overpowered Kong and he needed help from the humans and their conviniently armed vehicles (that second plot point annoys me, if you couldn't tell), so we could assume that the gauntlet was meant to be part of a larger arsenal for Kong to better stand a chance against them and other potential creatures in there. But that is the only potential setup in GvK for the gauntlet and considering how casually that scene happened (part of my issue with that scene), it doesn't feel like that plot point was taken into cobsideration by the writers when conceptualuzing the gauntlet.
Let's be real, we both know what truly was that the filmmakers were thinking with the gauntlet.
      [toy ad starts playing]
Although you could headcanon the explanation I present as the canonical in-universe one and it even creates a small bit of multi-movie storytelling that I really wish we had more of in the Monsterverse.

Omni: "I'm not saying {the Heisei asteroid fight} looks bad mind you..."
Me: I'm saying it looks AWFUL. Arguably the worst set of fx in the Heisei, and objectively worse than most things in the Showa. I felt something like physical pain watching that after GvsMG(2), enough that I nearly clepped out of finishing the video at first. (This was back when the only subtitled copies were non-legit VHS spawns.) Not that I would have missed much other than SpaceyG himself being reasonably awesome. Nowadays I skip the whole film when going through the Heisei series, and if I want to see SpaceyG I'll play Save the Earth. (And watch/play a much better fight between him and Mogeura for that matter!)
Anyway, that's an aside. Milage varies I suppose.

While I do find it enjoyable, the MonsterVerse has clearly lost steam and I hope it won't fall like what happen to the MCU.

Spoiler: they also brought back Scylla for an action cameo. And just like with Tiamat, Godzilla does NOT ef around.

I believe mothra was always supposed to be there but was changed to the original titan. After test screenings they changed it back to mothra

Same, mothra just makes the sense for that part of the story. Instead of just another flying kaiju Godzilla is on friendly terms with.

I'm sorry dude. It IS kinda self-evident. Things just kinda happen and work, the stakes are pretty lacking, and the human story or story in general is laughably non-present.

I'm sorry omni. But this film did everything imo wrong for the monsterverse. It seems many things have been dropped and completely ignored. Even down to really poor writing for the human and monster characters.

This movie is a trash heap. The crtitcs are right, and asking anyone to strain themselves into analyzing such shlock is almost insulting. It's dumb because everything that the humans do is either annoying comedic attempts or conveniently being able to know and do things they shouldn't.

Sounds terrible. Won't be watching it. Godzilla in general is oversaturated slop. Put it to rest and try again in 20 or so years.
