I live in Mississippi and we have more alligator snapping turtles than common snapping turtles. They are pretty much in every pond or water way down here. I have one in my farm pond right now that's probably over 75 lbs. This year she probably produced 30 offspring that lived, they will go off and make their homes in everybody else's ponds around me. They are much more common here than soft shell turtles are.

Putting a dangerous dinosaur into a pond is just plain stupid. The owner of that pond will never get rid of that snapper, and it will kill the ducks, eat the fish, and attack whatever human or pet who tries to swim in there. Every year for the past decade or so, we get a snapping turtle who lays her eggs in the middle of our (stone) driveway. It's always fun finding the babies wandering around after they hatch. Most of them head straight for the nearby ditch, but there's always a few stragglers who get lost. I just pick them up and move them closer to the ditch. When they're that small, they don't try biting you yet.

I’ve seen people feeding ducks and fish. Snapping turtles take full advantage of this. I saw a parent and her kids feeding the ducks. There was a couple of hen mallards with ducklings. All of a sudden there was a disturbance and one of the ducklings disappeared. Half of it came floating back to the surface before it disappeared too. I’ve seen big alligator snapping turtles stalking fish and ducks in ponds. Feeding the fish and ducks distracts them enough for the turtles to grab about easy meal.
