I agree with both pastors but note they didn’t mention how sometimes when evil is unleashed others copycat or even magnify the act. Vigilance is the only prevention. Notifying authorities when any warning signs are seen can help prevent further attacks. My heart aches for four more families that are grieving tonight.

I think something was misunderstood in some of the comments, the pastors were not trying to capitalize on anything. They are NOT just trying to throw out empty words and prayers. They were offering prayers and support for the families that are grieving. They EVEN said that just praying is not enough. They're expertise is not gun control, the legislation surrounding it, the government, politics, or any of that. The pastors are trying to bring hope, faith, and what support and resources they have to a community stricken by tragedy. That may not mean much to everyone, it may not be the results and actions you immediately want, but they aren't just doing nothing. Support is a kind of action. And I know many of you are writing a lot of your comments from grief, anger, pain, tiredness, and heartache for the families going through this and the sheer amount of tragedies that have happened over the past few weeks/months/years. However, please don't take it out on people just trying to help. We as a country and as part of the Earth need to united more than ever before. It's not easy, but our differences need to stop dividing us. I don't have all the answers and I don't claim to. It's clear that we do need better gun laws, control, background checks, etcetera. I still need to read up on it, but I think we should look at how other countries handle their gun laws, accessibility, and control, how they help their citizens ease their struggles/stressors and how mental health is assessed, and possibly adopt some of their methods. It's not impossible. It's probably not as easy as it sounds, some folks may be reluctant for whatever reason, but I think it could help. And it does need the actions of people and our government to make it happen though.

Why not call out and denounce gun violence? Why didn't they both think gun violence would come to Tulsa, Oklahoma? Why can we not bury our dead fast enough before we have more innocent soul's shot to death while just living their everyday life? I attended the same highschool with someone who was very unfortunately shot and killed. It was a pretty rare thing for our town. At her funeral, cars were lined up and down the neighborhoods for blocks on end. It seemed like every person who went to that school had shown up to attend the funeral. Some of us had to stand at the back because their weren't enough chairs. We all might not of known this person on a personal level, but in the few times I have personally spoken with her, she was incredibly kind. It was clearly shown to me that day, how complete strangers could all come together and mourn for someone whom we may only have had had a brief interaction with, yet felt inspired by her kindness. What bothered me the most about this event, the majority of the funeral wasn't a celebration of what made us inspired by her, or about her at all. Who we had came to commemorate and mourn. It was about her allegiance to her faith and how important faith is to get through these types of things. The time the pastor had with so many of these grieving people of the community was used to convince people how faith is the most important thing and how she had always attended church. While the pastor might not have negative intentions, after the funeral I only felt mad because her memory was muddled down with a religious rhetoric.
I’m sorry for your loss. The unexpected death of even a distant childhood friend hurts in a profound way. I think I can understand your reaction to the pastors’ words. I wished they had given more space for grief instead of rushing right to hope and positivity so quickly, especially since it’s all so recent. But we should also bear in mind that those pastors do not have the luxury of knowing their specific audience. I’m I think their message felt a bit distant because it was aimed at the general public-more distant people who don’t have direct relationships with the victims.
That's a great perspective on the matter I haven't considered. I was born in Oklahoma, but moved to Kansas. So I am confident we aren't talking about the same person. From my perspective, speaking from my own non-religious upbringing, it bothered me in that moment that all of her good will was attributed to her faith. How during the funeral her faith completely overshadowed her personal accomplishments and memory as a person. But you may be right. I am not strictly an atheist. I believe faith is a vital and essential catalyst for positive change in a person. At my sister's funeral we all had an opportunity to speak about our memories of her, and it helped us overcome our pain. I simply wish we had the same opportunity to speak about our experience with this kind soul instead of a traditional sermon we see everyday at church

I think something was misunderstood in some of the comments, the pastors were not trying to capitalize on anything. They are NOT just trying to throw out empty words and prayers. They were offering prayers and support for the families that are grieving. They EVEN said that just praying is not enough. They're expertise is not gun control, the legislation surrounding it, the government, politics, or any of that. The pastors are trying to bring hope, faith, and what support and resources they have to a community stricken by tragedy.
That may not mean much to everyone, it may not be the results and actions you immediately want, but they aren't just doing nothing. Support is a kind of action. And I know many of you are writing a lot of your comments from grief, anger, pain, tiredness, and heartache for the families going through this and the sheer amount of tragedies that have happened over the past few weeks/months/years. However, please don't take it out on people just trying to help.
We as a country and as part of the Earth need to united more than ever before. It's not easy, but our differences need to stop dividing us. I don't have all the answers and I don't claim to. It's clear that we do need better gun laws, control, background checks, etcetera. I still need to read up on it, but I think we should look at how other countries handle their gun laws, accessibility, and control, how they help their citizens ease their struggles/stressors and how mental health is assessed, and possibly adopt some of their methods. It's not impossible. It's probably not as easy as it sounds, some folks may be reluctant for whatever reason, but I think it could help. And it does need the actions of people and our government to make it happen though.

Why not call out and denounce gun violence? Why didn't they both think gun violence would come to Tulsa, Oklahoma? I attended the same highschool with someone who was very unfortunately shot and killed. It was a pretty rare thing for our town. At her funeral, cars were lined up and down the neighborhoods for blocks on end. It seemed like every person who went to that school had shown up to attend the funeral. Some of us had to stand at the back because their weren't enough chairs.
We all might not of known this person on a personal level, but in the few times I have personally spoken with her, she was incredibly kind.
It was clearly shown to me that day, how complete strangers could all come together and mourn for someone whom we may only have had had a brief interaction with, yet felt inspired by her kindness.
What bothered me the most about this event, the majority of the funeral wasn't a celebration of what made us inspired by her, or about her at all. Who we had came to commemorate and mourn.
It was about her allegiance to her faith and how important faith is to get through these types of things. The time the pastor had with so many of these grieving people of the community was used to convince people how faith is the most important thing and how she had always attended church.
While the pastor might not have negative intentions, after the funeral I only felt mad because her memory was muddled down with a religious rhetoric.
If you are talking about who I think you are, religion was a very important part of her life and was something she would've wanted.

I think I can understand your reaction to the pastors’ words. I wished they had given more space for grief instead of rushing right to hope and positivity so quickly, especially since it’s all so recent.
But we should also bear in mind that those pastors do not have the luxury of knowing their specific audience. I’m I think their message felt a bit distant because it was aimed at the general public-more distant people who don’t have direct relationships with the victims.

From my perspective, speaking from my own non-religious upbringing, it bothered me in that moment that all of her good will was attributed to her faith.

No it is absolutely this bad. There are whole generations of kids who grow up alienated at school and aren't allowed any escape. This is what happens when you have places where people who do not belong together (and no I'm not talking about race or sex or whatever) and don't like each other have to be together every working day of the week without a choice to do so. They grow up hating the world because to them their world is genuinely hell.

Because Chicago isn’t the only place dealing with thugs shooting other thugs. Philly, Baltimore, NYC, LA, Detroit, Houston, Dallas, and Tulsa deal with that everyday. No one cares when two people who have beef with each other shoot each other. But people care when someone randomly kills people for no reason. Also what about domestic violence no one cares until the abuser kills the victim.

I met someone that lived in Oklahoma. How she was talking about it seemed like it wasn't dangerous. When I think of Oklahoma I think of Black Wall Street and tornadoes and not a high crime rate. Again, regardless of the crime these shooting massacres can happen at anytime and anywhere.
