This is so sad. I will be the first to say if others in my field have not chimed in. I am licensed to practice Physical Therapy. It is very common for patients to be unrealistic after medical procedures. Very few surgeries will clear your pain outright. Your body just does not heal like that. It takes significant time for soft tissues and surrounding bone and muscle to heal properly. You will have pain after surgery and it is often controlled post operatively pretty well with narcotics. This gentleman more than likely did not adhere to medical instruction after his procedure and therefore wanted to blame his doctor for his pain. Let's not forget medicine in itself is actually a form of art. This is explained to you in pre op by your doctor before you even get the anesthesia. You sign paperwork that explains this in depth. I see back patients all the time after surgery and this is the most extreme thing I have ever heard of. We generally want to help all patients feel better and move on with life and recover however you have to be realistic here.

Doctors have stopped prescribing pain meds period. They are giving iv Tylenol and motrin oh and gabapentin. That's not opioid pain mess and does not treat pain. At all. It's cruel to not treat pain because you have a misplace fear of someone becoming addicted to opioids. The chance of becoming addicted to opioids from a prescription is very very low in reality but PROP has done an excellent job with their proproganda work within the CDC which is why we have these dumb 90mme guidelines. And with the DEA prosecuting doctors, they choose their license over their patients. Doctors are becoming draconian in their opioid prescribing. The pain community has said this for years and now it's effecting everyone not just us in the pain community. There will be more carnage on the govts hands because people don't like to be cut open and left in severe pain like a lab rat. The medical community is shameful. We are back in the 1700s.

While certainly true, there are some unique types of pain (or maybe "nerve reactions" would be a better term, since I would say akathisia and some manifestations of peripheral neuropathy fall under this umbrella) that can literally drive people insane. However, since people who experience a severe mental decline from those sorts of reactions tend to kill only themselves, it doesn't make news in the same way.
That to say: it may not be that he mismanaged his expectations or sabotaged his aftercare; it's possible that something during his surgery triggered a new pain that actually affected his mental stability. _Of_ _course_ that wouldn't make what he did good, or acceptable--it would only be a reason, not an excuse. It would, however, definitely be a wise thing to train healthcare workers on, so they have additional questions they can ask to help identify who may need psychological support (or intervention) when presented with a patient who is complaining of intense chronic pain.

Van, I understand your issue. I have stage 4 degeneration in both hips and protruding discs in my lower spine. I've been in a wheelchair for 1.5 years. I don't trust the AMA(aks: American Murder Association) anymore. My dad have hip surgery and for years kept going back to the Drs. complaining of pain. They ignored him, except when he said "I guess I'll have to go to my witch Dr.", they wrote in his medical records that he believed in Witch Drs. being too dense to understand his frustration with them. Moving forward several years he received a call stating that his hip replacement had to be redone as they had installed a defected hip part. He found what he thought was the correct Dr. (only did work on prior messed up knee and hip replacements), scheduled early in the am, and was home early afternoon. The nurse came the next day and had him sent back to the hospital for over a week as his entire leg was infected. Several years later he was told on the first Wed of Aug 2008 that he had a brain tumor and would be dead in 3-4 months. That weekend he had a ruptured intestine and the same hospital wanted to operate. He refused. Went home a week later, on morphine, and died Sept. 1, 2008.

Really its illegal street drugs killing addicts not prescriptions. So now when you have surgery they send you home with Tylenol that doesn't help with pain. This man was begging for help and doctors ignored him and he snapped. I'm a irretractable pain patient. The only reason I'm still here is because I have minor children. Ppl dealing with pain are not being ignored but screened properly. The doctor did advise him how to manage the pain but he wanted an opioid. Do not only are medical heroes being targeted but also criticized. Ppl can be so ungrateful and self centered. I pray that one day Americans get off the recliner and have to serve the general public while ppl act like employees are just the help. I am suffering great pain and I understand and sympathy for the guy , doctors need to understand what pain we are suffering it's horrible, doctors need to prescribe enough pain medicine for us to be relieved, I understand why the guy did this, I couldn't do something so horrible. I can hardly walk and the medicine they used to give me they won't give now , it's bull crap. 😤

32F, I had ankle surgery 2 days after Christmas.. it was necessary, I wouldn't ever walk again without it.. they're doing the best they can for me right now, but I'm limited in my ability to walk, I use a cane.. I had issues during surgery, I ended up staying 3 days in hospital instead of 3hrs.. they were limited in the amount of pain killers they could give me, mainly due to I stopped breathing and almost died.. but also to prevent further damage to my liver. To this day I'm in some pain.. I can't go back to work still? may not ever to be able to .. but compared to the agony I was in pre surgery.. I'm in a better place.. I wouldn't dream of harming my surgeon or the nurses that held my hand when I woke up 8hrs after surgery on a ventilator, finding out my mom had to leave me.. I would've wanted her to see me like that.. but that's no excuse to attack our healthcare workers . Before undergoing surgery we're told their could be issues or that it may not be a full success!! Pain will happen.. this man would've been informed of this especially surgery involving the back/spine.. I'm wondering just how much suffering he was going thru if he could go hunt down a gun, then return to the hospital to kill those innocent people.. the first 2months after my surgery, I was lucky to reach to 🚽 , or 🧽 bathe myself.. let alone hunt down doctors and nurses after finding a gun.. it's not the docs fault if some bad eggs ruined the pain management system, because pill heads wanted to get high or sell them . We all have to go thru pain.. and be limited on amount of pain meds we can get..

For anyone who is in pain and can't get what they need because of the 2016 laws.. Kratom extract really works! It also cures withdrawal as it's a natural opioid from a plant. It's a bit expensive, but legal at your local headshop in most states.

There were around 100,300 drug overdose deaths in the US in the 12 month period ending April 30, 2021.[5] From 1999 to 2020, nearly 841,000 people died from drug overdoses,[6] with prescription and illicit opioids being responsible for more than 500,000 of those deaths, up to 2019.[7] In 2017 alone, there were 70,237 recorded drug overdose deaths, and of those deaths, 47,600 involved an opioid.[8][9] A report from December 2017 estimated 130 people every day in the United States die from an opioid-related drug overdose.[10]
Those addicted to opioids, both legal and illegal, are increasingly young, white, and female, with 1.2 million women addicted compared to 0.9 million men in 2015. The problem is significantly worse in rural areas, where social and economic variables, health behaviors, and accessibility to health care resources are responsible for a higher death rate.[11] Teen use of opioids has been noticeably increasing, using prescription drugs more than any illicit drug except cannabis; more than cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine combined.[12]
