    A test of a heavy bell rope is 3 or 4 Devon call change ringers pulling the tenor up in peal..
    Imagine Exeter tenor rope with 72cwt up top and 4 big blokes on the tail end.

    It only takes one skillful ringer to ring up a bell of those proportions

    sally explosion
    odd place for it to break though

    Seriously though, I do wish people would not try to ring up (or strike when down) heavy tenors in peal. Bell ropes are expensive and not easily replaced. This has happened elsewhere and IS avoidable.

    • @josephfrye7342
      @josephfrye7342 Год назад +1

      yes i should go for the digital carillon with speakers if i where you. because the bell rope breaks and it is a pain to replace the rope in usa. i seen this happen in united kingdom.

    Been ringing and the only thing I broke is the slider but the rope end up my right hand injured...but now I'm fine...

    That's happened at St Buryan tenor 37cwt in C# up there in Cornwall poor old John Barnes went flying off the box after they got them up in a rise it was worst because he felt off the box after trying to pull the tenor for call changes at the start when he pulled the tenor the the rope snapped and he went flying with no injuries probably a bit on his head this was years ago and it probably kept on swinging until it stopped because it's a 1.9 tonne bell it will ring ring and ring for a while

    These chaps were not exactly pulling the rope but "checking" it on lowering. Judging by the ringers involved (with all due respect) it looks as if that something in excess of about forty stone of weight and effort was being applied against 41cwt of bell - poor rope didn't stand any hope whatsoever! ding -dong!!

    • @ListerofSmeg2006
      @ListerofSmeg2006 5 лет назад +1

      To be fair it's a sensible comment. The amount of force being applied coupled with the (in my opinion) poor technique contributed to the rope breaking.

    • @sbennie1
      @sbennie1 4 года назад +1

      @@ListerofSmeg2006 yeah in 'your opinion' got any ideas on lowering 2 ton in peal?

    • @ListerofSmeg2006
      @ListerofSmeg2006 4 года назад +4

      @@sbennie1 perhaps less pressure on the rope and more respect in the peal for the tenor? In my bellringing days when we did a peal ring down we followed the tenor bell as opposed to the treble and let that dictate the ringing down. It meant less pressure on the two tenor ringers and less pressure having to be exerted on the rope. It took a bit longer to ring down the peal but resulted in less stress and pressure on not only the equipment but also the ringers

      It takes someone to un tie the old rope from the wheel and tie on a spare rope. nothing very difficult. if you mean the rope that broke in this video, i’m sure they would’ve probably sliced on some new rope with a new sally (at the rope makers workshop) so as not to throw away an entire rope.

    Has anyone ever accidentally held onto a rope and got pulled up by it because they weren't strong enough to hold it? I never seen that happening in a video before so I don't know if it actually did happen, but I'm guessing it happened at some point

    • @kyletheringer

      It can happen if you take too much rope in or if you ring a big swing chiming bell like great peter of york minster and hold onto the rope as its rising
