Within 1:30 you gave me the answer to my question that I was struggling to find anywhere else. This is how all videos should be and thank you dude. I stayed and watched the rest of the video because I liked this and your other videos so much. I've subscribed :)
Yo man I just wanted to say I've been a subscriber for over a year, you were a lot smaller channel back then! Awesome to see how you've grown into the go to channel for dirtbike information and single track/enduro riding.
Even ignoring the aesthetics, KTM's and Bergs are just much, much better bikes to tune, work on and maintain. It's blatantly obvious that KTM's were designed with some sensible engineering decisions vs the Japanese bikes that focus more on finding the exact right fastener for every single bolt hole = 423489107465981623498173 different bolts and a hell of a lot more time to do anything with them Pulling anything out of a KTM is very easy to do, and its such a pleasure to work on. PDS shocks come out in 2 bolts, thats it. You don't have to strip half the damn bike off the frame to get it out. Parts are vastly interchangeable across the board, for instance the exact same rims/hubs/bearings/spacers are used for the entire full size lineup from 125 to 500 (and even many of the adventure bikes) across years from ~2003 to 2017 I believe (with only small differences before and after that, which you can use adapters), because why the hell change it every couple years and every model like the japs do? Just engineer it PROPERLY once, and then use it over and over again. Makes parts super easy to find and very cheap 2nd hand Almost all fasteners where reasonable are the same size meaning you only need a very small toolkit to work on the entire bike etc
Dude you're doing such a great job with these videos. I've enjoyed all of them because you provide us with real useable information about the things we really need as riders. Keep up the good work and hope your good as new from your knee injury ✊ braaapp
so the XCW - with the lower 1st and 2nd gear - you're probably less likely to stall in the slower harder single track trails. Thanks for this video. I just bought a preowned 2009 200 XCW.
Does anyone know how I can make my 250sx have slower gears. I’m not ready to give up track but I enjoy enduro. I’m on the clutch 99% of the time in single track. All my buddy’s with xc’s barely ride the clutch. Just smaller sprockets?
Great explanation! Thanks for the info and clear explanation. On another note have you ever done an overview of height (seat height , rider height) for all these different brand bikes you ride/own? Those would be good videos also.
Kyle great videos and info. I am picking up a 2019 KTM 300 XC-F TPI next week. It was a tough choice deciding between this bike and the XC. Your videos definitely helped. I am coming off a 450WR, hoping the xcf hits hard enough out of the hole. I ride mostly trails - classify myself as a beginner to intermediate rider but want to get better.
Just wanted to say that I use the air pump I bought from your website for the first time today. What a lifesaver ! great quality! I didn’t win the sweepstakes but it was money well spent
I prefer the wide ratio transmission, headlight, tailight, trip meter, linkage suspension, and a carburetor! 2018 Husqvarna TE250 was juuuuust right for me. Love my bike!
Kyle, how would you rate (1-10) both the 2020 XC and XCW in the following categories; overall suspension compliance (1-10) ; suspension ability to absorb the technical stuff (1-10); engine ability to deliver smooth controllable power (1-10) , Overall rating of the each bike best all arounder (1-10).... thanks for your time:)
Good breakdown. On a side note for the shorter riders, such as myself, the linkage makes the bike sit quite a bit lower than the PDS so that is huge for me. I put the short seat on it and didn't touch anything else. A few of my previous KTM's I have had lowered due to my height and injuries and the suspension was never right. I currently have a 2017 Husky TX300 with about 210 hours on it, it's basically the same as the 300xc save a few small things. I am loving the air fork, it's also the first fork I haven't had to valve for my lighter weight. I run it at 123-127 psi. 123 for slow speed technical and 127 for desert and more open riding. Almost everyone I ride with has the XCW 6 Days or "regular" XCW and it's too tall for me when we swap bikes. The gearing is noticeably different and less gap which I prefer. I am generally in 3rd when XCW's are in 2. I am 5'9" and under 150 lbs.
Great video! Just entered the contest, fingers crossed! Just bought my first dirtbike last summer. A 2008 Yamaha ttr230, nothing special but figured it was somewhere to start. Not knowing a ton about dirtbikes when I was looking for my first one I didn’t know too much about 2 strokes and thought they were more about being on the pipe and riding balls to the wall. I’ve learned a lot about dirt bikes in general and have seen how versatile 2 strokes really are. My riding style isn’t too fast (yet) and after watching many of your videos I’ve thought a 300 xcw would be right up my alley one day.
I have a 2014 xc-f 450 with linkage and I ride single track and atv trails and I have no issues.I have the hard plastic motor guard and my bike works great...ktm are great bikes
Nice video! I agree about the trans. My preference is also the XC trans, 1st is actually a little low on the "W" even in gnarly stuff, making it easier to get on the pipe and spin when you wanna grunt it. The 300 has so much grunt that it pulls the slightly taller XC 1st gear just fine in the gnar. An owner can always gear the XC down a little if 1st is too tall also. These 300s are great bikes either way - they are favorite I have ever owned. Selling my '13 TE 300 (XC-W) and just bought and '18 XC. The new e-start and counter balancer are awesome! :)
Perfect explanation. The 250 xc seems to be the all-around dream bike. But here in Greece no one ,and I mean NOONE ,knows the existence of the pure XC line. Not even the sellers. Where could I find one? (And Not pay for the transfer from states 😏) Also ,great work dude. I’ve seen all your vids ,and they’re great! Thank you 🙏🏾
Great explanation! Loving the way you are still finding ways to make videos while in recovery. Shame I can’t enter for the bike coming from Australia, all the merch is so nice, love the socks
I am Australian I own a 2018 XC300, I prefer the linkage suspension for my riding style, XC is readily available in Australia, but EXC,EXCF is certainly the most popular choice
In Australia We have EXC for the 2 strokes and EXC-f for the 4 strokes. The reason EXC(f) is popular in AUS is because we are required to have road registered bikes to ride in our state forests.
ALB2073 not entirely true,I'm in Victoria and ride an XC300 but we are lucky that we have recreational rego,so does Tasmania, other states miss out,we can ride state forests without full road rego
Friend of mine has a 200 xc-w it is a sweet machine. Maybe 200lbs. Only thing I didn’t like was the Pipe went way down low towards the ground. Easy to dent
My W appears to have more clearance than my xcf. The travel may or may not be greater but it appears to have a clearance advantage. I have a 350 xcf-w and an 450 xcf. 2021.
Thanks for the info, these 300 xc w are being offered at a good price right now that being said its the 2018 non fuel injected, whats your thoughts on this 300 xc w for hill climbs vs the xc,
I just came back from a Ktm demo day, had the chance to try the 250 xcw, 300 xcw tpi and carb. Based on your reviews you leaned toward the Xc, and thats the bike I own now, glad i follow your reviews, i like much better the xc, over the xcw, for the longer 1st and 2nd gear, also, i like the carb better. Thanks for your reviews! really helpfull!!
Linkage works better for fast guys in racing - its less prone to packing and kicking in faster trail whoops. Linkage makes the shock handle wider variety of conditions without revalving it. This was more obvious in the older KTM's. Fast guys with a PDS (no link) often have to re-valve for their preferred area (which is why it sucks). Give me a XC with softer valving and lighting. Or a XCW with linkage. Not fast ? .......then it wont really matter as much.
This is very good information that I did not know! I have always been curious but not enough to ask anyone. Thanks for the great and informative video.
What’s up Kyle !! Some good info you are sharing so thank you but i would love to see you do a maintenance/settings/ do and don’t Video on the 2022 xc w 250tpi .
Id say that the xc is really for specific racing. It could be geared accordingly for your specific race/riding conditions but it has the "semi close ratio" transmission so its for specific use conditions whereas the wide ratio transmission would be better for a more wide variety of conditions without changing sprockets.
Clark Family Adventure Tours Excf is the same as xcw f they both same , just Excf is the street legal wersion. Same suspension , same gearing lights etc. Just the Xc is diffrent.
You are the reason I’m going to pick up my new X CW 300 Saturday can’t wait to throw a leg over it i’ll be asking you other questions too I weigh 200 pounds in my birthday suit any suggestions on the set up
Great video Kyle, very informative on the gearing. I always thought wide meant all gears were wider and assumed they would be taller, and it never made sense why that would be good in what they call the trail version. Now I understand so thank you.
The ratio gear issue he is talking about is easy to explain this way... You have a tight corner before a huge hill climb and you can only do 2nd gear but the pull is long on the hill. My Te250i husky tpi bike had problems sometimes in those areas but man could it go through tight stuff with ease. My guess is a 300 would have done better in that sudden hill climb scenario. I'm sure Kyle knows the trail I am talking about up by Strawberry Reservoir, I believe it is 310?
Ws need a taller 6th I would prefer the gaps be in the upper gears. My w is geared for the narly mountain stuff 13, 53 and it could really use a higher 6th for road sections.
@@nepicness exactly the transmission s would be better with a super high 6th who cares if it bogs for a second on top as long as it drops the rpm s significantly.
Pick me pick me!!! That’s my dream dirt bike. I just bought a KLX300R which is a huge step up from my TW200. You make great videos, thanks for the content!
It’s a 2005, but I like it a lot. Runs well, good suspension, wheelie power and good gearing for putting all the way up to over 80. And fairly light. Unstressed engine, long service intervals.
Hey Kyle, could you try the BRC Racing 500cc kit for the ktm 250/300? I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on a big 500 and how it works on that bike.
Hey after watching this video I decided to purchase a 450xc-f. Partially under the understanding that the trans was lower than sx, but not as low as xc-w. Trans gearing is identical as sx. Just a heads up
Hey Kyle , just ordered my shirt. Can’t wait till I win your bike. Also just subscribed, been watching all your videos for ever, all this time I thought I was already subed.
Very nice clean bike man I'm just got my bike 2019 KTM exc 300tpi in aussie.thxs for sharing the difference between each bike .r u ready to swing the leg over yet.
In Aus we get sx (Track bike) ,xc(Track bike) and exc (complianced for road) . sx is motocross , xc is basicly a mx bike with enduro aditions an 18 inch rear wheel and clear tank aimed for enduro racing ,and exc is the only street legal version .neither sx and xc are Adr approved street legal cant be riden on any puplic road tar or dirt. This applies to both 4 and 2 strokes.
Thanks for the video! I want to go with a 300 xcw because of the pds and the light, trip computer, and taillight aswell as the enduro type gearing but i dont think i need the low 1st and 2nd gear as much
Aren't all EXC's street legal? International or not? So that would be the difference in the two and why KTM uses both names when they really are the same exact bike other than that street plate.
In the U.S. EXC's a four stroke street legal bikes. In Europe , Australia and other places EXC's are 2 stroke enduro bikes equal to the U.S. XCW. Over there the EXC (U.S. XCW's) come with blinkers, horn and other street gear. There are no XC's in Europe, Australia etc. etc.
understood thanks man! I think the only reason we only get 4 stroke EXCs is bc those are the only bikes that pass the emissions standards in the US particularly California where a large portion of bike sales in the US are from what I understand. If the 2 strokes could pass our emissions I think we'd also have the 2 stroke street legal models. I do know of a couple guys getting lucky with their XCW's and getting them plated here in Virginia. There are other states that make it easy too.
we get exc and xc in NZ not sure why they have not gone to aus yet , exc 2 stroke here dont "come " street legal , you do get all the stuff in a box and can choose what you want to do after
gotcha makes sense. I wish we got the 2 strokes street legal capable. You basically have to TRICK our DMV into thinking the bike is an actual MOTORCYCLE and not an off road use only dirt bike in order to get a street legal plate for it. then you would of course have to add the mirrors and turn signals in some states. Some states here allow hand signals only and turn signals aren't required to have on the bike in order to be street legal, only 1 mirror is required. weird. I would LOVE to ride NZ one day. I lived in Brisbane for about 6 months and met a bunch of kiwis and all they talked about was how great the riding is over in NZ
what would be the best street legal bike for tight single track but could also pop on the track and from time to time? was looking at the ktm 350 exc but have been venturing towards a 300 or even 250 two stroke
Here in Australia the exc is the weapon of choice, I went looking for a 250xc earlier in the year and only found one of four that came into the country someone beat me to it though
In the manual, the xc and xc-w first gear is really the only difference in gearing. Second is almost exact. But yeah they do feel totally different. Triple clamps are different and the bar mounts are not rubber mounted on the the xc-w. Also the frame is different. Bikes that look so similar couldn't be any different to ride
My xc-w had a really tall 5th gear. Too much sometimes. I'm really torn between my xc and xc-w transmissions. The xc is difficult to ride slow in 1st gear such as my rides in Moab. I'm on 4t not the 2t versions. Also can't stand the efi!! I want my carb back, it ran so much better.
I live in Belguim Europe Exc doesn't have linkage here but PDS.. I like linkage more that is why I don't ride Ktm. Big difference in acceleration PDS the suspension will lift the bike and traction is less, but better to clear obstacles In linkage the bike lowers in acceleration more traction, that's also why used in MX .
My local KTM shop owner told me the xc's are built with mx engines, 300 being a bored out 250 to get more top end than a normal exc or xc/w. Also, to the guy that says you don't get certain bikes in certain places, you get them all in Europe, not sure about Australia n that but check their websites. Where it says something like ktmmotorcycles/eu change the eu to en and it will show you a bunch of different bikes. They've got different websites for different places. If I had to choose one it would be the XC 250 but I can see why you might want a 300!? The exc's and xc\w's above 150cc are inferior bikes to the xc's in my opinion. But that's just my opinion!!?
Did the nomenclature change? Used to be (late 90's, early 2000's) KTM had MXC, SX, and EXC (which replaced the late 80's 'Enduro'). Now we have the XC, XC-W, EXC, and SX?
W’ are not street legal in the USA and they only have tail and head lights, they do not have turn signals, brake lights and do not meet emission to be street legal. The EXC in the USA is street legal.
@@rah_84 no bike comes from the factory titled, all bikes come from the factory with a certificate of origin. The dealer then uses the Certificate to do the title work. KTM always had a gray area in that their certificate’s for off road bikes, the did not have “ for off road use only” on them as required to be on non street legal units. Some dealers would take the risk and title off road KTM’s as street bikes.
1 hr of googling this subject didn't give me half the info you did in this quick video. Thank you sir

The problem with headlights on dirt bikes is, the front fender casts a shadow right where you need light the most.
A brief clear and detailed explanation. Can I change the first and second gear in the XC to get the XC-W?
so is the xc w street legal in the uk and also is it avalible with eletric starter because im thinking of creating a supermoto
Thanks for explanation, I really needed it ;)
The ratio gear issue he is talking about is easy to explain this way...
Adam Batchelder same I use a 300 xc as my commuter and could use a higher road gear
How do you like that bike?
It’s a 2005, but I like it a lot. Runs well, good suspension, wheelie power and good gearing for putting all the way up to over 80. And fairly light. Unstressed engine, long service intervals.
Isnt the seat height different?
Hey Kyle, could you try the BRC Racing 500cc kit for the ktm 250/300?
I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on a big 500 and how it works on that bike.
You need a nice fat wallet for that mod but I think it would be the best 500 ever since they haven't been any new technology on them since 1989
BRC for Yamaha YZ250 ya but but I would stick with the KTM catalog kit for it I didn't know BRC made one for KTM..
Hey after watching this video I decided to purchase a 450xc-f. Partially under the understanding that the trans was lower than sx, but not as low as xc-w. Trans gearing is identical as sx. Just a heads up
Do they have the same plastics ?
Hey Kyle , just ordered my shirt. Can’t wait till I win your bike. Also just subscribed, been watching all your videos for ever, all this time I thought I was already subed.
did you win ?
Very nice clean bike man
I'm just got my bike 2019 KTM exc 300tpi in aussie.thxs for sharing the difference between each bike .r u ready to swing the leg over yet.
Can you install headlight and tail light on the XC without too much modifying?
Good evening have a question and your opinion which engine would be compatible to the gas gas Ec 300
So glad you made this video 😁👍🇺🇸
Thanks for the video! I want to go with a 300 xcw because of the pds and the light, trip computer, and taillight aswell as the enduro type gearing but i dont think i need the low 1st and 2nd gear as much
Is the intro music an actual song or must intro music? Bangs
All KTM enduro in Australia are EXC, 4 or 2 stroke ! road registered
we get exc and xc in NZ not sure why they have not gone to aus yet , exc 2 stroke here dont "come " street legal , you do get all the stuff in a box and can choose what you want to do after
gotcha makes sense. I lived in Brisbane for about 6 months and met a bunch of kiwis and all they talked about was how great the riding is over in NZ
hello kyle av got a 2012 xc 150 but kick start only is there any way of putting a electric start on it ,,if you could help please
I have and older 300exc and now I bought a new 300XC, 2016 model. Calif. desert is good for both but maybe the XC will be funner?
what would be the best street legal bike for tight single track but could also pop on the track and from time to time? was looking at the ktm 350 exc but have been venturing towards a 300 or even 250 two stroke
What is the equivalent to a ktm 200 exc I haven't had a bike for awhile and the 200 was the shit for trials back when I used to ride?
Here in Australia the exc is the weapon of choice, I went looking for a 250xc earlier in the year and only found one of four that came into the country someone beat me to it though
How about the horse power ? Is it the same?
In the manual, the xc and xc-w first gear is really the only difference in gearing. Second is almost exact. But yeah they do feel totally different. Triple clamps are different and the bar mounts are not rubber mounted on the the xc-w. Also the frame is different. Bikes that look so similar couldn't be any different to ride
I've owned many of both and can tell you that 2nd gear on these bikes are very different :)
Dirt Bike Channel I agree. Same deal with my TX to TE. Manual says second is almost exact but the don't feel even close.
If the difference is only 1st and 2nd gear Then the top speed should be the same on xc and xcw ?
My xc-w had a really tall 5th gear. Too much sometimes. I'm really torn between my xc and xc-w transmissions. The xc is difficult to ride slow in 1st gear such as my rides in Moab. I'm on 4t not the 2t versions. Also can't stand the efi!! I want my carb back, it ran so much better.
Does the stock silencer have a forest service approved spark arrestor on the new bikes.
So is the 2016 ktm 250 exc the same as a ktm 250 xc-w? Can they be street legal is that why they have the place for a license plate?
Wouldn't running a 13/50 gearing ratio make the XC-W more useable in the 1/2 gears?
I’ve been wanting to hear the difference
I live in Belguim Europe Exc doesn't have linkage here but PDS.. I like linkage more that is why I don't ride Ktm.
Big difference in acceleration PDS the suspension will lift the bike and traction is less, but better to clear obstacles
In linkage the bike lowers in acceleration more traction, that's also why used in MX .
You also get the same suspension as the 250 SX bikes probably just set up a bit differently!? AER 48 forks and a linkage shock.
Could anyone tell me if the xc models are street legal in canada
Did the nomenclature change? Used to be (late 90's, early 2000's) KTM had MXC, SX, and EXC (which replaced the late 80's 'Enduro'). Now we have the XC, XC-W, EXC, and SX?
They changed about 10 years ago or so
I know it’s an older model but difference between EXC-W and WCW?
Great info! I always assumed the Ws were better for wide open speed since they are road legal and come with lights.
W’ are not street legal in the USA and they only have tail and head lights, they do not have turn signals, brake lights and do not meet emission to be street legal. The EXC in the USA is street legal.
@@stephenmitchum5864 They used to come “street titled” from the factory. Did this change?
@@rah_84 no bike comes from the factory titled, all bikes come from the factory with a certificate of origin. The dealer then uses the Certificate to do the title work. KTM always had a gray area in that their certificate’s for off road bikes, the did not have “ for off road use only” on them as required to be on non street legal units. Some dealers would take the risk and title off road KTM’s as street bikes.
@@stephenmitchum5864 ah I see. Thanks for the explanation!
Damn thanks so.much. waited so long for this video bro!!
Happy to help.
@@DirtBikeChannelwhat about the xcr-w ?
