    Hi Roger I slide mullet alot for Mulloway or Kob as we call it in South Africa and managed to catch a 10kg yesterday. I see you hook the fish behind the dorsal fin which I wouldn't recommend especially if there is current. Try hooking it the same way but just behind the skull bone, the meat is nice and tough there and that way the fish is much easier to slide, more streamline and it's head will always face into the current. Even better you can use 2 hooks, one behind the skull and another by the tail as Kob/Mulloway tend to grab the fish from behind, well that's my experience.

      Thanks for your insight.

      Another great thing to use is a tooth pick.
      Take the tooth pick and break off a scale just towards the head from the dorsal fin going length ways down the body, then put your hook just under the tooth pick.
      Less damage to the mullet and the head then looks up the line as an anchor so the fish always faces into the current. Having a second hook by the tail is a good idea 👍
      The other way I have tried but haven't hooked anything yet is a cable tie through the eyes (left to right) and then you cable tie your hook to the head...
      Greater chance of your bait staying into current and staying alive ,👍

    Rule of thumb for me is to give the rod 100 continuous wiggles right from the start. Point the rod tip straight up and wiggle. It moves the non return slide every-time you wiggle, the fish swimming down the aids the slide.

    • @saltwater_addict742
      @saltwater_addict742 Месяц назад +3

      His rod seems too soft/light action. Better option would be to increase the length of the trace line on the slide (the trace line is very short in this video anyway). Fish has more line to play with to gradually take the non-returnable slide to the o-ring.

    Next time you’re going to connect the slider, take your bucket of water and mullet to the rod holder, bring your rod down and connect with mullet still in the bucket to keep it fresh then pull your line tight to pull the mullet out the bucket and gently shake the tip help it slide down your main line and keep the line tight as you set your back in the holder, incredibly important to ensure your break away sinker is well set.

    The idea is not to rely on the bait to swim out on a slide rig, next time stand "upstream" so you use the current to a certain degree and wiggle that rod to get the slide working. Small wiggles to start with but once he is down start doing bigger sweeps with the rod

Then at about 11 to 4 in the morning they come off the back banks and come in close to hunt. It's usually during those hours we get most of our fish. But whiting and mullet and bream that's mainly what there feeding on. Whiting in particular I've caught a lot of jew on live whiting but don't be shy to use bream because jew certainly will smash them

      @@RogerOsborneFishing no dramas. I tried it again yesterday evening with a dead bait, trying to use the 'shake the rod' method. I reckon it would've worked after about half an hour of shakin, but aint nobody got time for that! It would've been quicker to paddle out my bait with a kayak...
      After I got sick of slide baiting, I caught some live mullet, cast them out with a bog standard running sinker setup, and nailed 3 mulloway in half an hour. I only managed 3 because the mullet were so hard to catch. If I could've managed 10 mullet, I would've caught 10 mulloway - no bait lasted longer than 5 minutes, never seen anything like it.
      Long story short - it aint broke so I won't be fixing it with slide baits.
