- Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on its head with the release of The Indigo Disk DLC.
Gouging Fire is the all new Paradox form of Entei.
Entei has always strugged to find an identity for itself in Competitive Singles, and is the worst of the legendary beast trio.
But with just a few well considered Changes, this new Paradox form of Entei is functioning very well and has become quite a popular choice.
Plus it has a funny hat.

Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

litteraly started playing the game from scratch for this boy. I can't just watch in the side lines while they release this menace. Ogerpon almost got me, but those last 2 paradox forms are pure gold. Don't want to miss out on those.
@@Ravenstorm163 it doesn't protect from status moves unlike protect, only defensive builds would run this at least. Not many ground type moves are contact moves at least

Coverage, boosting, recovery, good bulk, and best of all: it fucking HITS you like a bus.

The fact that Sun provides 3 different benefits (proto boost, fire type boost, and better morning sun heal) makes him so fun to play.
Entei has yet to receive a paradox in Gen 9's DLCs, and that's pretty bad.
While Entei has recently become the best of the Ordinary Man duo and has always been ranked ZU before, Healing Water has been much less successful so far.

If a theoretical (but nonexistent) paradox form runs the incredibly niche unholy water and average slow, it's because its few other options are worse.

I can't believe Gouging Fire is Jimothy's new favorite past paradox form. I really thought Alakazam's past form, "Preposterous Cutlery" had it in the bag.
It's easy not to realize how good Fire/Dragon type is defensivly when the best examples are Reshiram and Turtonator... I love this thing, it's incredibly powerful without being overbearing in the slightest

Reshiram bulk is 100/100/120 with 120/150 for offense also reshiram is playable in a tier with kyogre, groundon and all the legendary dragon of course his typing looks worse there

Fire in general gets underestimated as a defensive type.
Iirc, it's second only to Steel in terms of number of resistances/immunities. Granted, two of those resistances are to Bug and Grass, but nobody holds those resistances against Steel, either. Ground weakness sucks... but Steel has that, too.
Really it's just being weak to rock, insane NPCs telling you that Fire was bad at defense when you were 8, and the trend that the fire starter has worse defensive stats than the other two that gives it the reputation.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 eh, Fire wasn't that good defensively even in gen 3 prior as it was built as an "offensive type". Water STAB and Ground coverage are everywhere and the other types you could resist, Steel would do it better. Stealth Rocks also ruined Fire types longevity after it's introduction.
Fire only started getting good from Gen6 because it resisted Fairy, which threatened the top-tier offensive types (Dark, Dragon and Fighting) and it kept gaining buffs with each passing gen. Fire is really only good NOW because it was an offensive archetype that recieved many defensive buffs over time.
It’s important not to confuse iron brian with brian hands, as he does not like being called that and doing so will place you at further risk

Never understood hitting through protect with full power. Like why? Make it deal half when hitting through protect because then you can’t check it with some smart play.
I was gonna comment this , coz I've been using Iron Boulder since release and there's only very few counter for it and gave me free wins

I suspect Raging Bolt's viability will fall off if Thunderclap ever becomes generic, though. That's kinda the only thing separating it from a number of other, kinda mid pokemon.
Unlike Walking Wake and Gouging Fire, which are a bit more multifaceted.

Gourging Fire seems like a really good addition to the metagame. Good against fairies and excellent against steel (cough cough gambit and dengo cough)
I fear it may be too strong under sun, not because i don't want to get swept, but because i don't want it to be banned. It might do its job TOO well.

It does get c*cked by Kyurem, tho. Outspeeds and ohkos with DP or DM.
Kyurem itself is like the one thing everyone thinks is underwhelming but then it sweeps like 2/3rds of your team.

I think it is safe to assume that Gamefreak had a little bit bias what it comes of wich paradox trio is their favorite.
The legendary beasts trio has well balanced but not absurd stats with a fair movepool and takes the originals and gives them a unique take on them:
- Walking Wake is an offensive version of suicune that works well on sun and rain;
- Great Neck (i know its raging bolt but i gotta respect Jimothy here) is a bulky Raikou that is amazing on sun teams and a signature move that complements well for being a somewhat slow special attacker while not being a absurd base power move like some legendaries have;
- And Gouging Fire is an utility and an offensive version of Entei, if not an upgraded version of IT that can work as a tank or an offensive threat.
While the paradox version of swords of justice is just kinda:
- Iron leafes is if we had virizion again but this time with horrid typing and a signature move that is very situational on electric terrain but the only one terrain setter is Picurchin
- Iron Brian is i guess the more interesting one since its a special attacker version of cobalion
- And Iron boulder is just faster terrakion with a signature move that breaks protect, not bad by any means but i think they could make the other paradox aproach.
Considering the popularity of the base trios and the tendencies of each paradox class, checks out.
Iron boulder isn't just a faster terrakion. With booster speed (the only set you should be running). It's a great speed control mon and late game sweeper. Outspeeding booster energy valiant and deoxys speed. It can also be used to revenge kill most boost sweepers at +1 speed.
This is basically physical Reshiram, if you think about it.
But actually good
It’s more like Charizard X, but if it had more versatility at the cost of stats.
I feel like its pretty telling how the other 2 beast paradoxes are opposites to their original versions since their ogs are pretty well made to start but Burning Head is basically just Entei but done better. Love to see it though.

As cool as heat crash is, it does make your matchup against a lot of defensive steel types much more difficult, as its not much heavier then the likes of metagros.
The fire type outrage seems fine, especially if it already doesn't mind using outrage itself

Running Dragon Dance + Raging Fury on Gouging Fire is EXCELLENT as a setup sweeper once you've eliminated your opponent's fire resists.
And they even gave it _Scale Shot_

Gouging Fire easily my favourite new Pokemon of the DLC, if not one of my new all time favourites.
Facts
Fire as a type actually has a deceptive amount of good defensive traits. It has 6 resists and most of them are actually good. Its weaknesses suck, but the theoretical advantages of fire as a defensive typing have been there since gen 6. Moltrace is another good example of a fire type leveraging its defensive attributes recently.

If you think about it, burning bulwark is basically old gen king's shield on steroids.
You get the attack halving effect plus chip damage plus it stays on after a switch.

Blimax's leftovers, 2 attack, DD + Gouging Fire set was the most insane thing I've seen. Just Dragon Dance, burn, repeat until you get +6 and start attacking.
So smart how a physical move makes contact and is effected by burn which works with the special protect
Ive been theorycrafting a potential set that makes use of scale shot instead of dragon dance for momentum, and using the immediate power of sun boosted fire moves

If gliscor alone was enough last time, that AND what you mention can definitely cut a sizable amount of usage off the elephant.
I don't think Burning Bulwark would be a staple to its movesets. Too prediction reliant.

The beasts have always been my favourite trio. And while I prefer the original trio, I’m honestly glad to see them getting some love!
I don't know why but my brain alwaya goes on autopilot and calls it Gouging Flame, it just sounds so much better
Im looking to use this thing outside sun with scale shot, dragon dance, morning sun/burning bulwark, flare blitz set with loaded dice and Adamant nature. Might change it though to more defensive but we will see. I freaking love this thing.

Gouging fire is really cool gameplay wise, but what I hate about it is... It's actual design. The other two really modify the stance and concept of their base legendary, while this is just entei with a hat. It doesn't even feel like it's part of its body, just slapped on there.
Lesser intelligent fails to understand ceratopsians. It's not a hat, it's a styracosaurus.
The shiny helps incorporate the crest better, but it really needed more of a snout or something if they wanted to keep the body plan the same.

I heavily disagree with you on design.
The differences are clear if you look at them IMO.
For one, because of it's crest, GF is more hunched than Entei, which leans into why it's more beefy and therefore slower than the latter.
Next, it has a longer fur mustache than Entei, probably for majestic reasons.
It has front claws where as Entei does not.
It's back legs have green scars to give it more seperation from it's Johto Counterpart.
When Entei stands, it stands all noble and dignified while GF is in constant crouch and ready to strike mode.
It's your opinion in the end but I just can't see what's not to love about it.

Thing is another showing of powercreep, A pokemon with an incredible typing, that they give both all the defensive and offensive options, go think what move is this guy missing? or what exploitable weakness exists, besides trying to stop with unaware.
So now we have Great Hat, Prideful Path and Great Neck. With this we have completed the three legendary beast mega evolutions

Enter is also kingambit in that it really punishes physical fairies and the like. A burn is such a useful thing to spread especially in this meta.

I'm excited to run this on a sun team in doubles. With only 4 evs and Adamant nature, it still oneshots things with STAB Sunboosted, Protosynthesis Flare Blitz without boosts. With Dragon Dance it can oneshot through resistance too

never had 4 move syndrome with grouging. you can switch flare blitz out with raging fury or temper flare if you're worried about recoil or heat crash dmg variance. temper flare i feel has less drawbacks than you think especially with sun up. i feel like if you just run it like a normal ddancer with 3 moves it's fine as is. morning sun is just icing on top if you can afford it
Fun fact: Dino Entei is the heaviest paradox pokemon overall. (590 kg! Even Emboar's 150kg lol) So heat crash's gonna deal 100+ most of the time, having stab, harsh sunlight, protosynthesis and an extra dragon dance is a literal overkill.
Highly recommend Morning sun for him aswell he learns it at 42. With harsh sunlight its 2/3 total hp!
I've always been an advocate of making Poison/Toxic reduce Special Attack in half. Just to watch the Pokemon World seethe.
Basically Charizard X, I’ve been running a DD Two Attacks Morning Sun set
something i havent seen anyone do or talk about that i've been dominating the ladder with is max speed timid with low enough attack EVs to get a speed boost in the sun. your attack is still over 300 which isnt amazing but with a choice band you're hitting unbelievably hard with fire moves, you genuinely dont need dragon dance at all you can just tera fire and nuke through a whole team. fire moves hit so hard that i've had to run raging fury (fire outrage) as well as flare blitz to not kill myself, with outrage and earthquake for coverage but they honestly are pretty weak like this so you rarely want to click them at all. raging fury or flare blitz with tera fire in the sun one shot 99% of neutral targets and most resists (it consistently ohkos roaring moon for example), and in my team with raging bolt and walking wake i have plenty of ways to threaten the very small number of switch ins like dondozo

Wouldnt be suprised if it gets banned, burn immunity + DD is a dangerous combination as seen with Bex but I also really like how versatile Gouging Fire feels without dumping all the broken utility moves on it (Spin,Hazards,Knock,Sleep,etc)
Morning Sun and Dragon Dance? Good lord… also wow this thing has so many awesome tools. Tera, item versatility, good moves (albeit with 4MSS) and bulk? I can see this thing flying well out of control if not addressed quickly enough.
Bro I love using Gouging Fire, faced a stall team and when everyone was weakened I Dragon Danced Tera Fire for the win

I've been trying to use a Temper Flare + Stomping Tantrum set, but it hasn't really worked out as well as I expected
Both moves are a meme tbh cause there will never consistent opportunities to use them effectively. Maybe it’s okay with Burning Malwark because that move has a chance to fail but you’re way better off foregoing the occasional 150 BP for a guaranteed 120 BP Flare Blitz. The only real application for Stompng Tantrum is maybe Hustle Durant because you could miss a Hustle move against like a Pex or something and then nuke them with Tantrum.
Someone has to explain the Iron Brian joke.
Inkay will always have the best hat in all of Pokémon, but I appreciate that others haven't given up trying to compete.
