    Wilde didn't begin the British aestheticism movement. That was Walter Pater (who taught Wilde at Oxford).

    um i hate him? lol Oscar WIlde's claim is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. I'm reading the portrait of dorian gray and so far it's interesting and well written but I hate it at the same time. I can't believe anyone can be that miserable

      The the main idea of a book being overly philosophical. although the book does provide a moral; "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment"... It simply does not point towards it directly. We need a higher understanding or Moral Philosophy and Aesthetics to be able to find the blend that Wilde found.
