I Think Beyonce is way over hyped. I do sleep in a bed with Beyonce sheets but I don't think she is all that talented. She is just the it girl for the Hipsters and Millennials. Ylang 49 Is a pure masterpiece to me. I could bath in it and it’s one of my top 3 fragrances. I would love to buy a backup, but I’m always afraid that it will not hold up due to their expiration dates which may be a myth and probably gets in the way of people buying more of them. A lot of their fragrances are just too bland.

    Le Labo, Byredo and Atelier Cologne are largely lumped into the same category for me although I do think the latter has improved a teeny bit. None of them can hold a candle against the ultimate hipster house, Essentric Molecules. I loathe what this house is doing, full frontal daylight robbery (I do secretly admire their marketing strategy, brilliant in a way)

    About the le Labo shopping experience:
    Much of their stores suck (the salespeople, the vibe, etc.)
    However, if you want to get free samples and a great experience, go to a le labo department at a NORDSTROM. The sales lady not only gave me samples, she even sprayed more samples into the Nordstrom samplers, gave me sample face creams too!!!

  • @lisab.1595

    First of all, not every fragrance smells the same on everybody. If we all liked the same fragrance, then there would only be a few fragrances to choose from. I like Le Labo, no, not all of them, only the ones I tend to gravitate toward. I like Rose 31 and I love Gaiac 10, which is my all-time favorite fragrance. People go totally nuts over Creed's Aventus, and I hate that stuff, so, again, I will listen to reviews mostly to find out the sillage, a little info on the dry down, and, I hate cloyingly sweet fragrances, so I try to find out from reviewers what they think. I wouldn't put down a whole house...........every house has good and bad fragrances. I wore Chanel for years and years, but now their new fragrances don't last more then an hour or two. I got a sample of Tom Fords Lost Cherry and almost fainted from the sweetness, although tons of people seem to love it. I don't go by hipsters, and yes I'm originally from NYC, that means nothing. I buy the scents I love, whether expensive or dirt cheap and I don't care what the rest of the world thinks is great. I like a few of the Bond No 9 fragrances, but, very few...but again, it's mostly personal taste, that's the bottom line.

    Haha I love this video. Sitting behind $2000 worth of fragrances and then explaining how mediocre they are. Kind of refreshing seeing someone give their honest opinion, as opposed to all of the "influencers" out there that will literally say anything to get free shit and more followers. I do like the Rose 31. I ordered a sample of it, thought it was amazing, then I had a bottle made for me in nyc and I thought it smelled quiet different. Makes me wonder if the guy made a mistake mixing it. In regards to the Noir 29, I think it smells amazing in shampoo and conditioner (aka the Edition hotel scent). I bought a sample of the fragrance and didn't think it would be good to wear, but love it mixed with soap products.

    I have yet to buy my first bottle of Le Labo. I’ve sampled many. Construction and transitions are just something I expected more of in a well established (and expensive) niche house.
    Then again many modern perfume houses seem to care very little about transitions.
    Tom Ford perfumes DO transition, usually from one structure to another, but the transitions are very sudden. I don’t guess I mind so much if I like all of the structures, but the sudden switch does “take me out of the moment” and make me self-conscious of the perfume itself. For all I know that is Tom Ford’s plan. That level of meta cognition is very modern.
    But I’d like to go on record that an embracing of narrative structure, one that unfolds, is also current. And some of my favorite Guerlains do that gracefully every time, perhaps less so with the newer releases.

  • @tally1604

    I don't hate them. But I do find them redundant if you already have a sizable and well curated collection. They are just not unique enough. So I don't have a single bottle. Another brand I don't have a bottle by is bond no 9. There is something in their dry down that is off putting on my skin. Like a stale plastic water bottle. Plus, none really appeal to me much to begin with, even sans stank

  • @qaidikramuddin
    @qaidikramuddin 6 лет назад +2

    I'll take Patchouli. You're right though, they are very synthetic. It would have been nice if they'd just covered up the synthetic smells with their more natural ingredients. I thought I'd love Santal 33 because I'm a sandalwood lover but it was very disappointing. I will not buy a Le Labo again. I do know that they use Rose de Mai for instance in their rose but the synthetics just nuke it out. My cap holds tight though. Oud 27 is good.

    With le labo, your nose has to approach these scents with an entirely different level of expectation.
    I would expect him to hate the brand, as this brand is NOTHING like the Guerlain brand, or Chanel brand of fragrances. Le labo doesn’t give you “luxury”, in a traditional sense.
    Le labo is well made, but it’s not elegant.
    Strong, long-lasting, gritty, adjusts to your body chemistry, and many of the scents (when first sprayed), needs to settle.
    Wearing the Le labo brand, is like wearing a pair of distressed, beat up, designer sneakers (i.e. Golden Goose) : expensive, made to be distressed, but well made....

    I agree with so much of this, from the comments on their business model, packaging gimmicks, synthetics, sales associates/perfume mixers? There are a few I enjoy, Berg is decent but not in the range of good bergs in the $300 range. Santal hard pass. Oud hard pass. yeah, I have a lot too but don’t actually wear any. Too many better choices even in the price range $100-$150 less!

      U Smells Good agreed. It would be an excellent concept in the $150 range I’d say for 100ml, but the gimmicky nature of the mixing on site (clearly arguable if that is reliable, with lots of experience in bottles from different stores I’d say no) the labeling of the bottles, the caps that are easily tampered with...... its all too many strikes against, things that should not be with a high end line. I don’t need or want my name printed on the label by a clerk. I REALLY don’t want my perfume mixed by some rando

    • @kindnug
      @kindnug 6 лет назад

      By cap I meant the sprayer sorry, how it doesn’t even truly properly seal ( I kinda think that’s why there is an expiration date). How is that plausible on bottles at this price point, it’s not even sealed

    • @gunmetal2445
      @gunmetal2445 6 лет назад +1

      You will be surprised by how some luxury houses employ screw caps instead of seals. House Matriarch is one of them and does it for both their travel sprays and full bottle sizes. Both Roja Dove and Nicolai Parfumeur also uses a screw top for their travel/ discovery sprays and Roja's offerings are one of the priciest. So my HOM and Nicolai Parfumeur has not shown any sign of evaporation...touch wood.

    Yeah, Le Labo is an acquired taste. And yes, the line is very synthetic and "contemporary" in excecution. Overall their perfumes don't find too much joy on my skin.
    All but one, though, Labdanum 18. Powdery, sorta sweet labdanum, resinous vanilla and a hint of barely present castoreum and civet way deep down. Rather linear, but just works on me. And Lys 41 and Oud 27 have moments of interest for me. But for the price, not so much.
    Oddly, I find the Le Labo line of room fresheners much more interesting. Hmmm....
    Thanks for the discussion!

    EXACTLY! You picked 2 of my favorites of the Brand. Opened a restaurant in NYC in 2010 and they gacve us the Santal 33 candles can never get it out of my nose. I LOVE LOVE LOVE OUD 27 - reminds me of those overripe fabulous women of the 80's....and Patchouli 27 is the BOOZY East Village leather scene and rock bars before the kids took over ....HOWEVER LE LABO is so concieted - just replenised a Bottle of Patchouli in Singapore and they tried to sneak a bottle from under the shelf without the whole mixing - the formulation is so different and does not last long. Terrible.

    Great video. I have sampled the core 5 (santal, noir, vetiver, rose, bergamote). I liked bergamote and rose but the value proposition is very poor. The mixing in store is a marketing gimmick. I have seen the perfume separate over time. Thus, I will not buy a bottle unless it is heavily discounted.
    Eugene - you have such a great collection. I would love to see your top ten bottles.

    I will confess to being an utter amateur when it comes to perfumes. I never tend to wear them but I do enjoy smelling it on women every now and then as long as it's subtle. However, I stumbled across Le Labo fragrances in a store once and really came to appreciate how they didn't make me slightly dizzy like most perfumes and I came to absolutely LOVE Labdanum 18! I can't remember ever feeling this way about a perfume and it's my favourite scent!
    But seeing as you dislike Le Labo, do you think you could reccommend a perfume that smells a lot like Labdanum (or almost exactly like it) but is "Better" in your opinion? I certainly wouldn't mind if it cost less as well but I understand quality comes at a cost.
    I'd be very thankful for your advice, I may be a complete amateur but I just really love this scent and would be very interested in exploring others like it :)

    I found three unused travel sized sprays of Jasmin, Iris, and Ylang I bought three years ago in a drawer, and they still smell very good, in fact they smelled better and more concentrated than the current testers in the store, I wonder if some of the alcohol evaporated and it smells less bland? I bought the sample sets and found the concentration in the sample sets to be more intense smelling than the testers as well. Maybe the full bottles will settle in time and be better. Anyway, the three mentioned above are very good florals, bright, delicate, feminine for jasmine, which is actually more orange flower and wet melancholy violets and iris. Also the Lys is a nice soft banana candy. For the city exclusives I found the Gaiac too acrid and dry, the Vanille and Benjoin can’t compete with better ones out there, as they are too thin smelling, the base they use does not support round plush notes well, the Poivre, Cuir, Mousse de Chene are winners.
    Also you have several times mentioned getting headaches or bad reactions to scents that contain a fig smell, such as the The noir and Diptyque Rue 34. I have to admit that fig also makes me sick except for the green fig of Philosykos.

    Never been a fan of Le Labo it all kinda reads as the perfumes hipsters buy just to be different. Very synthetic but at the same time boring and cheap smelling. Did enjoy Iris 39 for a while but felt it was not worth it considering how many other dark florals are on the market. The only brands I dislike more than Le Labo are Bond No. 9 and Byredo.

    Have to say I agree - the only one from the line I really liked was Labdanum 18, but it wasn’t significantly unique enough for me to purchase. Although I did smell Santal 33 on someone and liked it pretty well on her, so maybe part of it is a skin chemistry thing...

    $2000+ of perfume; almost all of them full to the brim. This review reaks (excuse the pun) utter rubbish. At best he could use lego as an analogy for composition and structure, and at worst he defined one of his favorite fragrances from the lineup as a soggy, wet, damp moldy t-towel. Further explaining he's conscious of that and enjoys his facts when wearing it. I am all for open critic and honest reviews, but this is about as honest as a G7 summit on climate change. 😂 “It's a most distressing affliction to have a sentimental heart and a skeptical mind.”

    I simply cannot wear these. I've tried samples of quite a few of them and as you say very synthetic. They are more expensive than they ought to be for what is in the bottle. You can at times actually source real Mysore Sandalwood, I certainly in that case wouldn't bother with a fake such as Santal from this house.

  • @ramboram03

    No samples lol, you can make your own samples at the Nordstrom Le Labo counter for free and without purchasing any fragrance but why waste money on fragrances you don't really enjoy. Rose 31 was reformulated in 2013 as was Santal 33 , they were much more animalic before. The cumin note in Rose 31 has been largely removed and the rose is muted

    Interesting. I agree that Patch and Oud are the better choices here. However there is no underestimating the impact that Santal has on the fragrance industry by virtue of the number of clones and inspirations it has given rise to. If attention is paid Santal does transition nicely and is, in all reality, a well crafted scent that will likely be remembered as a classic. I also agree that Oud has no real agarwood in it but it does do a respectable job of portraying the skank in say a FM Dawn. In that sense it does replicate an oud like accord in a superior manner to the standard synthetic Firmenich or Givaudan mess that is pervasive in the industry.
