  • Here it cometh, the "awesome, explicitly complete and thoroughly thorough guide to all stringies that can be applied to a Hurdy Gurdy"

    Guitar Strings: amzn.to/2F3WUc3 or amzn.to/2D0tKIn
Cello G: not bad! Buying a complete set is often cheaper than a single string: amzn.to/2SJoL4i or amzn.to/2Osy31e. If you're in for serious quality, try amzn.to/2P5ELiT
    Badminton string: ugh! amzn.to/2Pa5QkX

I use all steel strings which are the most durable but for safety I tune my Hurdy Gurdy down a step so instead of G/C Tuning it's F/Bb Tuning which actually also allows me to play Great Highland Bagpipe music on Hurdy Gurdy.

Kürschner Strings offer sets of hurdy gurdy strings (for all of you without a German keyboard, you can also spell it Kuerschner when searching). You can also contact them and get an individual set exactly to your liking. I have done that before with other instruments and they are very helpfull.

Just got my gurdy and of course broke my low g melody string. Found something that works in South Texas and made a few good friends in the process. No one in store had ever seen a gurdy before. Imagine that.😇

I have found that guitar strings do not bow well. Nylgut strings by Aquila Corde works fine for the chantarelles, but for the drones I use gut. My hurdy gurdy came with violin stings. One of the drones broke after a week of playing, so I decided to do some experimenting. I make fretless 19th Century style banjos so I stock Nylgut classcal banjo strings for my instruments. I also keep a supply of gut strings on hand. My hurdy gurdy is a relatively inexpensive instrument with friction pegs and I had to do a little set up on it, but the gut strings greatly mellowed the tone. It's almost a year now with no further string breakage. The gut and Nylgut strings really adhere to the cotton very well.

Interesting! I avoided nylgut this far because aquila themselves consider them only good for plucking, but apparently that's not the case!

Thank for your nice reply and I understand but the Gut & Nylgut string is absolutely impossible to find here and the violin strings are much more short to fit my HG. No idea what to do??? Thanks again for your suggestions and so sorry to bothering you sir.

Northern Renaissance Instruments [UK]stock complete gut sets for gurdy in 3 weights. Highly recommended. Similarly, Neil Brook [UK] sells a "wonderstring", a badminton string which is a superb high D chanter string which never wears out.

I am starting to build a synphonie gurdy. Why doesnt anyone have a list of string types and sizes for hurdy gurdy. Best for D tuning , C tuning . I found one site that said 15" (38.1 cm) is the best scale legnth? I want to build my first one simple , 4 string, 2 chanter strings hi and low D and 2 drones . Ive also heard Lute strings work. Need some help.

I always follow your channel, likes your video very much. I build my own HG in Covid long lock down period, it's almost over. Now the problem is to select the proper string??? As you know, there is no specific HG strings are available in the market more over this kind of instrument is not familar or known in our country only guitar & violin string is available here but the violin strings are shorter then the size of my HG. Dear friend could you please give me a suggestion which No. of guitar string I will use for Melody, Drone and Trumpet strings? My HG, is 2+2+2 strings. Very difficut me to select the proper string now. Eagerly waiting for your suggestions

Since it's handmade, you will have to experiment a bit. My first suggestion is trying guitar A strings for chanters and E for drone, not because they're good, but at least they're very cheap and will get the instrument playing. After experimenting a bit, I suggest moving to either Sugar strings from Aquila Corde, or gut strings (thomann has Kürschner and ships worldwide). They have kits to choose from. If it's easier for you to find, I suggest viola strings: they are longer than violin strings and a bit heavier!

Is there an advantage to having a gurdy with a longer string length from nut to bridge? Will it sound better or play easier?

    • @CaptainGurdy

think of a violin. Now think of a cello. That's the basic idea.

I tried Aquila "sugar" strings for the high G4 chanterelle and it does not sound good, especially from the second C and up. I will stick to Savarez gut even though they are expensive and hard to get outside Europe.
Viola strings with synthetic core work well for the drones and low chanterelle, 1/4 cello for the G2 on my Pajot Jeune.

this might be a really stupid question, but which of these strings is supposed to go where? By which i mean, are all the strings discussed used as melody strings? 😅

    • @CaptainGurdy
      @CaptainGurdy  3 года назад

Yeah I think I mention bourdon once or twice but for the most part I'm discussing chanters.

Sorry for correcting you, but here you can find a full range of Hurdy Gurdy strings, both synthetic (Sugar polymer) and "classical" gut strings. They are far more expensive than common guitar strings, but you get a great sound/quality.
