Let me know what you think of these crazy crazy videos in the comments below :) #TheStudioFamily
Adam Tan Green shirt guy is a field judge. They recently restricted field judges to the front sideline just this year. But before that, there was this culture of “If a judge is in your way, knock ‘em over. Nothing is more important than the show.” Hard to judge when your also trying not to get trampled.
HI ADAM!!!! can you feature me in a video take it as an advantage rather than a give, i play snare or tenor btw and you can play over my solo or sum i think it would be good views and idea
CoolCurler12 actually this is just rehearsal, if it were competition they would be in uniform and not wearing head cams, with the exception of a victory run at dci finals. trust me, it’s an instructor taking mock judges notes, i marched music city and we had someone do this
@@AdamTanPercussion It was probably the most fan fave show of the year. i saw it early season and i was PRAYING it'd make finals. I'm a Blue Devils alum, and I was happier that Academy made finals in '16 than i would have been if BD had won and gotten that elusive three-peat.
To answer your question at about 9:50: Back before 2019 there were a couple judges on the field: Visual proficiency, brass proficiency, and the percussion proficiency judge. The dude right there was the judge for the Drumline and Front ensemble. Starting in 2019 though, these judges are now relegated to the front sideline and a few yards behind the front sideline.
“I wish I could hear these brass flexes in person.” Man, try coming to dci finals next year. It’s really a great experience, having so many people around you that have such a love and appreciation for the marching arts. 100% worth your time to come to a show. The old drumline instructor at Michigan state who I can’t remember their name for the life of me, went to their first dci show and I believe it was the kidsgrove scouts that he saw and he was amazed. He told us that he said “well how can they not win? They’ve gotta come in first place!” They scored fifteenth place that year. The amazing thing about this activity is that once you take away the scores, they’re just groups who strive to be excellent, and each one of them are. Also, guy in the green is a judge! This past season they moved them so they can now only watch from the sidelines as a safety reason.
yeah the guy in green is the percussion judge (i think that was jeff prosperie, if you've heard of him). up until 2018, the judges were allowed to go onto the field during the performance and do their evaluation from close up, and the perc judge frequently runs around between the drumline and the front ensemble.
I saw this show live!! I remember losing it over the pit, I never wanted to be apart of a front ensemble more than in this show specifically. The academy is such a great corps
Another term for Brass Flex is Power Chord. It is when the entire brass section builds a massive chord, whether it is an amazing moving line or the base structure
Yooooooo, I'm so glad this video came out today. It's my birthday today and I suggested the xylo video. Glad to even see it on the channel. Thanks Adam!
this last season i was participating in a drum corps show in renton, washington, USA and i went to the bathroom with michael tran it was a life changing experience
Quick note: the thing that looks like a big set of sleigh bells is actually called a Rocar. It is a brazilian instrument that is sometimes used in place of a shaker, as is can project much more in a marching setting.
The Academy has always been my favorite corps since I was introduced in 2017. I love their members and their shows are always so entertaining. I loved his adoration towards the show
The guy in green is a judge. Probably specifically a percussion judge since he was following the battery. The on-field judges wear green on purpose to be less noticable (since the field is green lol).
7:24 :*Marcher misses the getting back up the pose* Adam: "They're very together!" -------- no offense to The Academy btw so much love out to every drum corps member!! Love you guys!
Those things in the Xylo can that sound kinda funny, like “5 second rule” and “aaaaaaad lib” are little timing shortcuts that they use to keep the counts and still have a little fun. The entire ensemble does it depending on the corps
The guy in the green is the percussion field judge. They’ve since done away with on the field judging because of the modern nature of props and it being a safety hazard for the judges. Now the judges stand at the sideline, and the drill writers typically put the battery more toward the front of the field so they can be seen and judged accordingly
DCI is the Elite college aged marching band competitions. They pull from high schools throughout the country to audition for positions. You should take the time to do a search on Bands of America (BOA) competitions. It is very similar to DCI except the band members are high school aged 14-18 year old students and the bands also incorporate wind instruments. There are 2 competitions that attract the most bands (in the 90 count ). The San Antonio Super Regional that is mostly bands from Texas which precludes the National Championship known as Grand Nationals that takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is amazing to see the choreography and books that these high school students put on the field.
So, I wasn't in drum corps, but I was in marching band in high school that marched corps style. I can tell you the guy in the green at 9:50 is a judge that's... well... judging (for lack of a better term) on their marching technique.
it’s crazy to me how people outside the U.S. don’t know EVERYthing about DCI i’m- cause dci is so much over here in marching band especially!! so glad to see foreigners appreciate our culture :’))
I’d like to recommend the percussion standstill if 2014 scv Or any scv percussion standstill honestly but 2014 is just my favorite, perfect blend of technical and musical plus the video has amazing production quality. Even if scv 2014 didn’t win or even get top 3 it’s still an outstanding show and one to be remembered
Im not trying to be mean by correcting. "Brass flexes" as you put them are called "Hits" in the DCI world. Really big powerful moments in the show/story to the show.
If you want a show with really great and impressive brass and percussion, watch Carolina Crown’s 2019 show, Beneath The Surface. It personally stuck with me after watching it live and is one of my favorite shows, competing for #1 with Babylon. I recommend watching the finals multicam run, if you can’t find it, I can email it to you.
If I were to suggest some more shows to watch/review I'd go with phantom Regiment 2008 (Spartacus, possibly one of the best shows in existence), Blue Coats 2010 and Carolina Crown 2015.
Hi Adam Tan. I’m currently a senior at my highschool practicing to make the all-state band. I was wondering if you would be willing to listen to how I’m playing the etudes and give me your opinions and advice. If not all of them then just the marimba etude. Thank you.
You should watch some of the vicfirth videos of dci shows cause they are percussion focus and occasionally have overheads but mostly are batterie cams or front ensemble cams
Sorry for the numerous comments So top 3 that year was Bluecoats- Downside Up Blue Devils- (i forgot the name but it was a ripoff of SCVs Ballet for Martha) Carolina Crown- Relentless
the guy in the green is the field judge(most likely for battery) they look odd and sometimes take away from the show cuz they stand out so much but yea he's a judge
Hey guys! Can you give me your opinion about the vic firth corpsmaster multi-application? I got a pair of m183 online to try them out but I would like to know what to expect when they arrive ❤️

Hey adam watch broken arrow high school marching band from 2019
The dude in the green was a judge. Funny thing, we are aloud to run over them if they get in the way. So he has to judge and not get ran over.
I'm pretty sure that guy in green that chased the drums was a field judge
CoolCurler12 he’s an instructor following them making sure they do what they’re supposed to. he notes the mess ups and tells them after the run
CoolCurler is correct. He's a percussion field judge. This is at competition so no instructors would be on the field
CoolCurler12 actually this is just rehearsal, if it were competition they would be in uniform and not wearing head cams, with the exception of a victory run at dci finals. trust me, it’s an instructor taking mock judges notes, i marched music city and we had someone do this

“Prop guns” as a person of the weapon line i’m offended

Love the prop guns, and those dance stabbers are great too. lol

Yea guy in green was a field judge for the battery
u should learn the marimba part for santa clara vanguard 2018
dude in green is a field judge. its just so they can get a closer look when scoring
The guy in the green is a judge. It's wild watching them sprint out of the way to not get hit.
It's too bad the 91 Star of Indiana didn't have a judge cam. It's still fun to watch that green pixel run around trying not to get hit
