  • Final Thoughts on Clerks III. Thank you to Kevin (and the audience) for not ripping me a new one.

You are a true gentleman. It was good to see someone approach Kevin with an honest and unbiased opinion on his half-baked finale to the Clerks story. Aside from your thoughts I have only seen people suck air from his asshole and tell him it tasted like cotton candy in regard to Clerks III. Lesser mortals would have cowered in your position. I hope Kevin gets a chance to see your video essay on the matter. It is a great analysis.

Brilliant. I like how you’re able to reach Smith despite your (totally valid) criticisms of the awful Clerks III. Do you have a recording of your Q&A where you tore into the film after a screening?

The guy sitting behind me told me that he deleted the footage just a couple of weeks ago. For the record, I did not "tear into him". It was actually quite the opposite. Which is fair. I told him what I really thought.

@@mowazeem644 sorry sorry. I didn't mean ti imply that you had said that. I was referring to the fact that Kevin and the other guy tried to kind of spin it to seem like I had torn into him after the movie, which wasn't the case. I was super respectful.

Really intresting watch. One thing I learned reading the origional script for Batman Forever was the final confrontation was supposed to be a riddle revealing that the sadistic choice for batman was a trap involving holograms. When they cut that out it both defeats the point of the bad guy being the riddler and makes the fact the floor suddenly vanishes in the theatrical cut completely baffling.
Side note: I wish more people were willing to tell an artist that sometimes they made a decision that absolutely worked. They dont have to spend decades trying to change it.

This was my fav episode of the year.
I grew up in the 90s. And wore out the VHS on Batman forever. Cause i love Jim Carrey. Once i figured out how to edit. I've been obsessed with the movie. Trying fan edits and rescripting. The deleted scenes were a gold mine.
I really hope the extended edition becomes available because i know Schumacher was the right man for the job. He did better Batman movies with Falling down, 8mm and Phone Booth.
Great job. Your speech for Kevin speaks for every Kevin Smith fan. I applaud your courage in not sugar coating your criticism. Because, yeah we are the harshest to what we love. Due to knowing what it feels like when what we are passionate about is awesome. And anything less than that is more disappointing to us than the average casual eye. Because of that investment and love.
I really love the ending pitch you had for Clerks III. Almost got me choked up. I agree. Randall should've been the one to die. Because he represents Kevin's recluse and slacker phase. Dante needed to move on.
Though i had the idea of them both dying in the end in a car accident(because Randall and Dante are inseperable). And we see Dante and Randall going to the pearly gates and are greeted by Stan Lee and George Carlin. Who say they loved the movie. And that Jay and Silent Bob handed in the finished Clerks film to a studio. And it became an over night success.
Dante and Randall go to a movie theater and we see the whole Vie Askewniverse gang show up to the premier. And watch the movie. Silent Bob gets on the stage and takes off his hat. And gives a speech from the heart on how the movie brought all the friends together. And how much The Quickstop meaned to them.
The credits role with famous scenes from Clerks and Clerks 2 aswell as behind the scene stuff we never saw before.

PLEASE supply us with the workprint, Joe Black. There are fans who will do exactly what you got tired of doing for a month and could knock it out in a week. Would make a better presentation for Smith’s upcoming theatrical screenings of it.

@@BMPfilms So, the only available file was handed to Smith on a thumb drive and that was absolutely the only available copy of it? It’s an absolute shame if that is true because for decades we’ve been pushing for this and all those #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut Tweets have been directed towards individuals that had exactly what you had. Trading is the only reason we are graced with material like the workprints of RoboCop 2, The Mask and more recently Super Mario Bros. Making something like this being desired for so long and being so close yet so far away will be disappointing for us all.

@@kamdan2011 What's interesting about that Super Mario cut is that it has nothing to do with Rocky or Annabel. Rocky is a good friend of mine actually, and we watched that cut together. He had NO idea who put that version together.

@@BMPfilms Understandable as they were both locked out of the editing room when the film went into post-production. Schumacher had similar sentiments about the Red Book fan edit when it was brought to his attention and wanted to personally thank the editor for their efforts. There was murmurs of a new version of Forever being prepped when the 2005 special edition DVDs of the film came out, but for whatever reason, it didn’t come to fruition. That’s how we ended up with a majority of the footage as deleted scenes.

I just finished this video (and also your Clerks 3 essay) and wow you really nailed it. Not only were you super respectful, but in my opinion correct.
I also think it’s weird that guy implied you ripped into Kevin/ made it awkward, when your opinion is valid and you (in these videos at least) always talk to him so respectfully.
I appreciate you being honest with Kevin , and I love that he was humble enough to listen and consider your feedback.
Kevin means a lot to a lot of us, and I’m glad he’s still so down to earth.

Joe was right, Batman and Robin is a better movie than Batman Forever.
It’s a more kid friendly movie, and it sucks more in funnier ways. It’s way more fun to laugh at, and as a kid it was way more exciting.
Also it’s not like either of them isn’t goofy af. I never have gotten why people who prefer Forever are so pressed when someone disagrees.

I really hope Smith watches your full length criticism of Clerks III film, where you really highlight his terrible writing. I feel he needs to understand that more than whether Dante or Randal should die - NEITHER of them should die - these are biting but ultimately hopeful COMEDIES.
Now that Smith has ditched the weed I’m hoping he can get back on track,

You know what? I give Kevin a lot of credit here. After ripping on Clerks III for quite a bit, I give him credit. There's still a bit of the old KS in there. There is something he mentioned with regards to Clerks III. That Randal is the guy who went from hating people to loving people. The problem for me is I don't get that at all from Clerks III. The whole movie is very tone deaf to me and, like you, I'm not much a fan of it either. The problem for me is that it reaffirms my belief that Kevin has hated Dante all along. That Dante represents all of Kev's self hate. The problem is he still can't see that WE loved Dante flaws and all. And that WE wanted Dante to succeed in life. That was the true beauty of Clerks II. It wasn't just Randal figuring it out. It was also Dante figuring it out as both of them learned to take charge of their destiny. That was WAY more inspiring to me than anything Clerks III presented.
Come the end of Clerks III, I still have no idea what he was trying to say with it. On the one hand, he has this message of learning to let go and live life as is suggested by Becky to Dante. On the other, Dante succumbs to failure and misery. Meanwhile Randal is still the misanthrope he always was. It doesn't really nail what Kevin is talking about here.
Sorry, Kev. I still think Clerks III is an absolute mess of a film. Still love the first two films but the third one pains me as a fan. Anyways, glad to see the civil discourse and this video did help to remind me that somewhere in there is a glimmer of the old Kevin I once loved.
Also... I would love to see that Schumacher cut. I've always felt Batman Forever was a very disjointed film tonally and after hearing you guys talk about the original assembly cut, it really makes me want to see it. Here's hoping that WB will put it out there someday!
