The thing about Devo is, they were a really brilliant, creative, unique group. And then they came out with "Whip It" and overnight, became perceived as a "novelty band". With one pop chart hit. Most people these days seem to think of them that way. But if you go back to their early stuff, I think you would love it. Smart Patrol/Mr DNA, Jocko Homo... check out their live YT video of Gut Feeling or Slap Your Mammy at a show in 1977. It's that synth pop you love (and me too) but so weird and different!
Early Devo is bonkers, and crazy good if you are into that. Even before Are We Not Men? they had been monkeying around with extremely weird videos about the devolution of humanity and playing with synths and guitars and drums. Weirdest shit ever and I loved it. Devo comes with an origin story and canon featuring a devolved man ape called Jocko Homo who is very confused and aggressive and wreaks havoc. No narrative intent, just raw, interesting images. I was a punk boy in 78 and was utterly transfixed by their first album. Blew my tiny adolescent brain!
I know, I watched the Grey Whistle Test on the TV on New Years Eve, I was 16 and was blown away, ever since that evening I love creativity and the absurd, it' shows us what we are😂
GERALD CASALE and Mark Mothersbaugh shifted nervously in their seats as they awaited the arrival of one of the biggest stars in rock history for a make-or break audition. In their hand was a crude cassette tape of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, a wacky cover version of The Rolling Stones 1965 hit recorded by their futuristic pop group Devo. The song was earmarked as a key track on their 1978 debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo - but only if they received official approval from Stones' main man, Mick Jagger. "Jagger had to approve it or we would not be allowed to put it on our record." recalled Gerald, 32 years later. "It was back in the days when intellectual property rights laws were strictly enforced. Our version of Satisfaction was so different it was considered a parody - and the Stones had full authority to reject the parody. "We went to the New York office of their manager Peter Rudge, which had overstuffed leather club chairs and a huge log fire. Jagger walked in, asked for a glass of wine, then said, 'Okay, put it on. Let's hear it'. "We stuck our cassette into this big boom box and pressed Play. Jagger sat in total silence staring straight ahead. We thought, 'God, he hates it'. "But then, he jumped up out of his chair and started dancing wildly in front of the fireplace. Dancing just like Mick Jagger. I thought, 'Oh s***, he loves it'. Mark and I went home totally stoked and elated.
Devo started in college as play so all songs made in 1972 then 1974 they played the rubber bowl in Ohio with Rolling Stones and played with them for many years they changed music playing with Morgan and making it there’s and makes sound tracks music today you will like it
Alan Myers aka the human metronome on drums. A memory that is forever burned in my brain is staying up late to see them on SNL as a young kid and they came out in the deevolution suits and tore the place down doing this cover. One of the best live bands you'll ever see.
Please do "Freedom Of Choice". It's a punky, sneering song with surprisingly scathing lyrics about US consumer culture. Swap out the synths and robot nerd vibe with thrashy guitars and a British accent and it could easily be Sex Pistols, The. Naturally, it's got a bizarre, funny video too. D-E-V-O!
I noticed Kurt Cobain on the wall behind you. Nirvana covered the Devo song Turnaround on a b side, i think perhaps the b side to Smells like Teen Spirit.
They were the pioneers of new wave. In 1977 they filmed a music video for their song Jocko Homo that is still insane today The music video for Satisfaction is quite unusual ,also
Listen to GirlUWant and Freedom of Choice and Uncontrollable Urge, Jerkin Back and Forth. Their best original songs. Another good cover they did was Johnny Rivers' 60s hit Secret Agent Man. ( You might need to react to the original too for comparison.) Mark Mothersbaugh has scored all the Wes Anderson movies, and children's shows like Rugrats, PeeWee's Playhouse, and was the magic drawing guy whose pictures become animated on Yo Gabba Gabba. His closest contemporary composer is Danny Elfman who composes for Tim Burton and The Simpsons theme and also had a new wave band whose stuff you might enjoy, Oingo Boingo. From them listen to Only a Lad and Ain't This the Life and Dead Man's Party.
And he also used Whip It I think but I remember that there were two Devo tracks in that film. Also the film Heavy Metal had two songs: Workin' in a Coal Mine and Through Being Cool.
Devo's visuals are a BIG part of their music (they are visual and performance artists first and foremost) So you are Missing out on a BIG part of what makes this band GREAT! #de-volution
Great band I love the song 'Are we not men" How about another visit to the band The Fall I recommend 'Fantastic Life' from the beginning it has this driving synth beat that's attention grabbing and doesn't relent, I think you'd enjoy it.
This was the first Devo song I ever heard, in I think 1977. The kind of spasmodic nature of it had be jerkin' back and forth and I was immediately transformed into a Devotee. Devo were so, so misunderstood to be a simple pop group. Listen to their music and you will discover they are intensely social critics; not some shallow vacuous commercial product. Spuds unite!
LOved your reaction, but you should watch their incredible videos. Your statement that they look funny would receive much more solid foundation.😬 Whip it is one of their greatest hits and deserves a reaction but their entire debut album is a must listen.
Thinking about it, Guided By Voices would be a really good fit for the channel. It's rock, it's weird, it's niche. Bring on Motor Away or Glad Girls or My Valuable Hunting Knife or Game Of Pricks. GBV songs are usually very short. A two minute long song is epic by their standard. I love that aesthetic and mindset: do your business and leave them wanting more. No frills, no intros, no outros. Bam. Done. Next song. Musta sucked touring and playing live - we have 187 songs about a minute and half long each.
Probably the greatest cover version EVER.
Mick Jagger said it was his favorite version of the song. When they played it for him to ask for permission, he sprung up and danced.
we're all DEVO!

Mark mothersbaugh has done many movie soundtracks
Devo is such a deep dive. You are so lucky to be able to hear it for the first time. Their first 5 albums are brilliant. No filler.
Quite possibly the greatest drum riff ever.
The visuals are at least half the fun with Devo. You should check out the performance of this song on SNL in 1978. It’s iconic.
Uncontrollable Urge on Fridays is killer as well. The epitome of what it means to entertain.
@@artis1969 Devo does both songs on SNL on the same day.
I’ve searched for reactions of that performance

Devo were way ahead of their time
Devo did a great Are You Experienced cover!
They got sued by Hendricks family over that
For me personally, this is one of the best covers ever
The Stones said this was the best version of their song they ever heard.
This track has, in my opinion, some of the best drumming.
Devo started in college as play so all songs made in 1972 then 1974 they played the rubber bowl in Ohio with Rolling Stones and played with them for many years they changed music playing with Morgan and making it there’s and makes sound tracks music today you will like it
Heard this called one of the best covers ever. I tend to agree.
This is such a quality deconstruction of the original that i really don't think of the stones version at all anymore...
I like it, it's like a brand-new song.
I, for one, welcomed our New Nerd Overlords
Alan Myers aka the human metronome on drums. A memory that is forever burned in my brain is staying up late to see them on SNL as a young kid and they came out in the deevolution suits and tore the place down doing this cover. One of the best live bands you'll ever see.
They're just one of a kind
Please do "Freedom Of Choice".

Great one here one of the best covers of all time they made it their own Love you
Actually a great place to start 🎉
Mark is a big time producer writter and does movie soundtracks etc.he’s a genius.
You do a good mix of bands. thanks and subscribed
They were the pioneers of new wave. In 1977 they filmed a music video for their song Jocko Homo that is still insane today
The music video for Satisfaction is quite unusual ,also
This may or may not be the best cover ever but it is certainly the most challenging!
The devolution band. “Devolution is very real.”
Great stuff Nick. Have you done Ths Slits' version of Heard It Through the Grapevine? Another bonkers and brilliant cover
Fantastic!!!
GATES OF STEEL
I missed the live announcement of the Queen’s passing while watching this video.
And I don’t care!
Damn right!
You are likable, Nick. Interesting reaction

Martin Scorsese used this version in the movie Casino.
And he also used Whip It I think but I remember that there were two Devo tracks in that film. Also the film Heavy Metal had two songs: Workin' in a Coal Mine and Through Being Cool.
gotta try "Thats Good" by DEVO
The best cover version of all time. No contest.
Second best is Al Green's version of I Want To Hold Your Hand.
;)
I don't always listen to EDM, but when I do it's DEVO!
I have a friend originally from Ohio. She argues that Devo is the best band from Ohio. I think it's Guided By Voices. We agree to disagree.
She's right! And The Cramps are second! 😉
You both have a good point. From Ohio. Of course, there is also Pere Ubu.
Love this song. And it lends itself to different interpretations, such as Alien Sex Fiend's goth, industrial cover which is also amazing.
Devo's visuals are a BIG part of their music (they are visual and performance artists first and foremost) So you are Missing out on a BIG part of what makes this band GREAT! #de-volution

How about another visit to the band The Fall I recommend 'Fantastic Life' from the beginning it has this driving synth beat that's attention grabbing and doesn't relent, I think you'd enjoy it.
there is good story of the band having to go and meet mick jagger and play the song for him before getting permission.
This was the first Devo song I ever heard, in I think 1977.

I think this song was used in the film Goodfellas.
I know Scorsese used it for one of his films
I believe it was in Casino
you need to check out whip it
LOved your reaction, but you should watch their incredible videos. Your statement that they look funny would receive much more solid foundation.😬 Whip it is one of their greatest hits and deserves a reaction but their entire debut album is a must listen.

BTW - Mick loves this cover :-D
There's only one last thing to do: react to cover of Satisfaction by The Residents.
Which is secretly the best version of Satisfaction.
If you like distorted sounds try nag nag nag by cabaret voltaire
Mutato Musika
I dont like it but it’s still great.
Exactly!
If you're going to do a cover make it unique and different, and that's what you get here.
Exactly. They changed it all!
Baby baby baby baby baby. Priceless
View SNL DEVO ⚛️🥔Satisfaction👍🏼👍🏼
it’s a real drum
Not a drum machine!
My sincerest apologies!
Not bad huh?
It's a Punk version.
