    Faction: Team Rocket
    Ultimate Goal: Rule the world
    Current goal: Catch that Pikachu
Short Term: Catch lots of Pokémon and deliver them to Giovanni...

Been trying to describe as meticulously as possible, but without getting too much into the thing, a faction of assassins in my homebrew D&D world and I was having a really hard time defining what to go into, what to ignore for now, and your video just gave me the basis to get it done once and for all!
Thank you very much for that!

Thinking about running a low magic game with political intrigue and I think factions can be great for filling in some empty spaces and making the world feel more real.

Just created 5 factions (guilds) of magic users who form a high council of 10 magi that rule of a city in my campaign. Each magician guild focuses on different spell themes eg. illusions and mind reading or elemental spells. Also added 3 houses which are similar to factions and allow some influence on the high council who govern the city. These houses form the political fabric of the city and operate like nobles who influence the makeup of the high council. Once 4 or more high council members give allegiance to a single house, that house elects the Supreme Magus (High Council Leader). Lots of opportunity for spying, intrigue and political manuevering in a city where magic is everywhere.

The campaign on working on writing right now is sort of based around this Druid circle that I see as a faction. But most importantly there’s a “warriors guild” that also is based in the same valley as the circle. I made an interesting idea that subtly lies within the story, the Druid circle is slowly loosing political power within the valley, while the warriors guild is newly formed and has potential to take over (I see this warriors guild as a new house moving to power instead of a group of actual warriors (it is just a placeholder name after all)). The druids want to preserve the valley while the warriors want to develop it to become strong and useful to the whole world.
During the campaign the players will encounter members from both “guilds/groups,” and can choose to help one gain power in exchange for items and help with the campaigns bigger story. As they grow stronger with one faction, they’ll see the other slowly fall. And as a nice little detail, in the epilogue (if they succeed), they can see how the valley is affected by the faction they helped. For example the warriors would see the valley develop to having better roads, walls around the main village, and even a castles construction beginning. Another little note I wanted to add was if the players help this warriors guild enough, that in the ending they will be offered a position as protectors or high ranking council/guard members.
Whereas if the players help the druids, the valley will be preserved and nature will be seen sprawling much more than it was before. People will be just as happy no matter who is picked to see the future of the valley, just a cool little renown system that offers players a choice and give them unique loot depending on who they support

Sometimes, I dream of a supplement that aids dungeon masters in building their own worlds. Like that one part in the DMG but massively expanded. Lists of different kinds of cultures, government systems, guides to building your own factions, nations, towns, cities, even divine pantheons.
Probably the most unrealistic part would be if being a collaboration between multiple DnDtubers. Like Pointy Hat, Puffin Forest, Fools Gold's Felix Finch, heck, maybe even HelloFutureMe.
Imagine if Matt Mercer was even brought in for it.
And all of it laid out like it was penned by a god. (Much like how Xanethar's guide was themed like it was written by Xanethar)

If you want some more mechanics for creating and managing factions, MCDM's Kingdoms & Warfare is a high-quality third party book with rules for letting player characters found factions and for managing NPC factions. Coach has some really excellent advice here for RP, but if you want to lend mechanical weight to that RP K&W may have what you're looking for.

Great video Coach! I would love to see campaign where relationship is not linear but herarchi. Like you meet faction that is hate by rich peoples, love by poor and neutral by authorites. But you travel to another county/city/country and this same faction is heros for authorities, love by rich and neutral by poor becouse of how they are perceived and who they are connected too.
For example: faction of partisians in one country but thievs and guerrillas or bandits in other.

Factionalism is something that needs to be mentioned here because a lot of times people will make factions that sound super unique and then do absolutely nothing with them in terms of drama or tension. Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica falls into this as you have a bunch of guilds but no real underlying tension with them.
The most recent example of good factionalism is with the dwarves in Rings of Power. The prince wants to mine mithril but the king finds it too dangerous. The prince and his people want to use it to save his elven friends but the king believes they should suffer their own consequences. So the prince goes behind his back and mines it anyway. Drama ensues. It's good factionalism.
When making factions it's important to think about what are their opinions toward things. What can a faction get out of a situation or lose and how will that affect the other factions looking on?
Bonuses and knight seals are all well and good, but unless you develop each of the factions' motivations, you'll end up with just a guild with blue people vs a guild with red people.

You lost me at "Ravnica has no real tension between its guilds."
The Azorius are a fascist police state trying to exert its will on all other guilds.
The Orzhov are a mafia run religious fundamentalists state that seeks to extort money from every living creature on Ravnica with a 90% tax rate and post mortem ghost slavery for anyone in debt.
The Boros are the cops and military faction that actually cares about the wellbeing of the citizens, but still spends most of its time fighting the guildless and the guilds most oppressed by the Azorius and Orzhov.
The Gruul are the disenfranchised street rable ready and willing to tear down every other guild and every building standing in their way.
The Izzet and Simic are the mad scientists that have cornered the public works and public Healthcare markets all while trying to keep their world ending mad science experiments off the radar of every other guild.
The Golgari run the undercity, produce the vast majority of food products consumed by the surface dwellers, and gladly kill or eat any surface dwellers that get lost in the undercity.
The Selesnya are an ever growing cult of religious fanatics that lure in people from all walks of life by promising better food than Golgari soylent green, peaceful living, and protection from the schemers, assassins, and fascists running most of the other guilds.
The Rakdos are a cult of demon worshiping circus performers who spend their off stage hours hunting down and assassinating the leaders of other guilds for fun and a ridiculously low amount of money so long as they can keep the corpse and turn it into a prop for one of their shows.
The Dimir are a spy network obsessed with secrets so much that they keep track of the secrets held by literally everyone on Ravnica.
Saying there is no inherent guild conflict on Ravnica is like saying there's no inherent faction conflict on Faerun. You might as well claim there are no issues between the Harpers, the Cult of the Dragon, and the Zhentarim.

@@CitanulsPumpkin I wasn't really looking to argue this point but these aren't really proving anything to me specifically about what they do to affect each other's guilds. These are all facts about them in Ravnica but I've yet to read something that tells me an actual opinion of one guild to another or a guild's goals for why they do what they do.
Again, wasn't my point. I was just reiterating the need for factionalism. The Guilds here don't really have that they just have a bunch of organizations that all do different things in different ways. It's built like that on purpose: to make it easier for players to jump into any of them and for the DM to have to make up the stories.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin Год назад

@@gho5trun3r68 Okay, you need to take an adult literary class. Each detail I listed is specific actions each guild takes against most of the others. Not only that but every guild entry in the book includes multiple tables listing off common interactions between members of other guilds as both allies and enemies as well as tables detailing how the guild in that entry views and relates to the other 9.
It's all in there. Don't use it if you don't want to, but don't pretend like the lore simply doesn't exist. You just aren't looking.
