I was wondering, what kind of pickups are you using? I wanna see if I can buy those kind of pickups for my bass but I don’t know the name
I remember having to play this in high school jazz band and never being able to nail down 1:04, felt somewhat embarrassed as i let the brass and horns do that part for me.
7 years later and only having come back to it a month or so ago after not having played this piece, i finally nailed down the whole song down to the random fill variations. All thanks to this video. Feels great man.
GOOD SHIT MAN
Yay! The best feeling omg
Great job, that is a real accomplishment.
GOOD SHIT BRO!
You were the only one in the entire high school who could play the part well enough to take the stage. Music isn't always perfect, but when you put your heart into it it's always awesome. I applaud your efforts.
Blimey. I might come back to this in a year and see if I'm any closer. Ol' Stevie's bassist appears to have been having a contest with himself to see if he could play every note on the neck in one fill.
Bass guitar fret value for money challenge lol. "I will play all of these, and I will do it in one song"
For my next trick I shall move on to a 5 string... Damn...
How ya doing on this one?
@@rebeccav.3734 Still nowhere close :)
@@davemakesstuff5828 the best piece of advice is to slow down the tempo to a comfortable tempo then be able to play at that tempo without messing up and then you wanna try and get gradually faster that's how I learned
@@davemakesstuff5828 I spent about 2 hours today on this song. The first 90 minutes was at 50% speed (you can change the speed in the bottom right) and now I'm up to 75% speed. It's still hard as hell.
Another great cover. Searching for a bass cover of a specific song on YT and finding out that it was made by you is like winning a jackpot.
Ik the way its formatted is the gold standard and he always plays it perfectly
Nathan Watts was 22 and had only been playing bass for 3-4 years when he came up with this masterpiece that is now a “must know” for bass players!
This was one of the songs in our rotation in Jazz Band in high school...The "hard part" as we called it, was the part you had to learn and play to try out for Jazz Band...Thank god I played trumpet...never would have made it trying to play this on the bass.
I can’t play it on either instrument. I have both and have been playing them for years. I can’t play nearly that high on the trumpet, and I get a sore lip if I try to go anywhere above the high E. (Am I doing it wrong? Is my mouthpiece not suited for the job? It’s gotta be a problem with my technique, and definitely not an issue with my intermediate grade Jupiter horn!) and I think I actually have more chance of doing it on bass.
Nate is simply the best bass player.
God,the hours he probably gave to learning and practicing
"Music is a world within itself with a language we all understand..." damn right, Stevie!
I really get moved by the sound of good bass players.
dude, I had to perform this song in college at least 15 times a week for many different audiences and I have to say that it is one of my most favorite songs too play and was one of my most intimidating songs to be assigned to learned for the set book as I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do I the justice it deserves. My opinion about you as a musician has changed 100% bc this song (if you know how to listen) tells you so much about the performing bassists personality and yours is shinning bright like a diamond!!! easily my favorite video so far. Performance attitude was so much more alive than any other video you have made! love it bro, keep it up and let's phase out those damn tabs!! I would be happy, honored, and motivated to be the notation Guy for your channel and transcribe all of the music in your videos. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THAT POSITION IS AVAILABLE TO FILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you don't like tabs?
@@sanskafka7120 notation ist easier to read for some people
I need the tabs bro lol
A Nathan Watts masterpiece! A very unrecognized bass player.
I’ve been trying to get this for the better part of the month and I’m finally playing it for my instructor at the end of the week! This video was a godsend thanks so much :)
A long time ago, back in high school, I joined the stage band and I had been playing bass for only about a year and didn't read music and this was one of the songs I was supposed to learn. I couldn't touch it. I was in a rock band and playing ZZ Top bass lines and thought I was pretty good. I tried to learn it off the record since I couldn't read. Not even close. Pretty advanced level, though. This was so humbling.
Hey man if you’re looking for a new level of bass playing check out Ryan martinie’s bass line in dig, I’m currently learning it’s and I promise you it is shit your pants hard. If you ever wanna push the slapping ability I’d check it out
Coming from a treble clef world, these notes intimidate so greatly. You played that without skipping a beat---no pun. Awesome!!!
Need too learn this in three weeks. Think im a bit screwed
Good luck!!!!!
Follow up... how did it go??
How did it go? x2
Hey, how did it go?
How did it go?? Please I need to know
Man, you make every song look so easy! I feel like i'm constantly struggling with my playing. Love the channel though, keep up the stellar content!
The shout chorus is sooooo satisfying to play!
A very clean rendition and well versed. Excellent dynamics and execution is really articulated to a fine degree.
there's a mistake on the tab on the bar at 0:40 mark, it's 13 instead of 11 fret, or at least that's how you play it.
who would dislike this?! Keep up the good work
Amazing cover. I remmber this song when i was a kid. I had no idea how much is going on in this bass line.
thank you thank you so much!!!! its been so helpful as a beginner bass player for you to use the tabs as well as playing along with the music. please keep up the good work
when i was bass player many MANY years ago. the two hardest things i ever had to learn were What is Hip by Tower of Power and that run in Sir Duke that encompasses the entire neck.
Are you still a bass played?
To anyone finding this impossible, a great song to go do is master blaster by stevie wonder, slightly easier and a great learning curve, after doing that song you’ll get this within a week
been playing for 2.5 years and feeling so proud i can play it all almost
DUDE! just crushed it just about 100% accuracy on my second day!
are you a professional?
@@chr1st1an111 nah man I don’t think he is this is a pentatonic scale for the solo with fills and once you get in to the groove it will make more sense. A fucking hard bass line is dig by mudvayne. That is a never ending onslaught of notes that feels like it is a continuous loop of dead notes and random note emphasis
It's a pleasure learning this after 14 years of on and off bassing, but man it's challenging of note. Advice? Slow down the YT video & play along section by section.
I couldn't tell you how long I've been practicing the bass line at 1:03.. Probably 3 hours at least, but I've got it down!! i just need to get my right hand stronger. I can only play that fast with a pick. 2:42 is the best bass in the song. I don't give a fu** about the part after the chorus. he's just following the lead. 2:42 is magic.
The fill at about one minute in is one of those essential bass lines. It's up there with the riff from YYZ and Stand by Me in my opinion.
nice bass line this.i got this down after a few goes once u feel the groove the speed will follow...
Man I used to listen to this song all the time. Definitely subscribing even if I can't keep pace; this is beautiful, keep it up.
Press Shift and < when watching.
Almost had to play this in a prom band a couple years ago
After trying to play it now, I know I would have been absolutely screwed back then
The unison part I got down instantly but the chorus... what a song
Thank you for sharing...this is one of my fav bass line since i was very young 1970+
Replay buttons for practice: 0:11 - 1:03 - 1:08 - 1:12 - 1:17 - 1:21
What a piece of art and what a perfect execution! Thank you for sharing this awesome playing.
this channel is amazing! im running out to get me a bass, right now!
COME ON COME OVER!
Please yes!!
u play relly good base. i like sehr duke. one of ma fav. trecks.
That . . . all of that . . . was beautiful.
BASIE, MILLER, SACHMO AND THE KING OF ALL, SIR DUKE.....
What a journey to learn that one! Just having a break while looking forward to playing the rest 😌
aw hell nah 💀 I'll be back in a couple years
Leaned it yet?
Learned*
Thank you for this video including tab. This will be a fun project.
Thank you for this gem. Great playing. Keep up the excellent playing
Your Bass tone is the best!
Dude! Nate needs to hear this. He would be pleased. You nailed it.
Solid playing. He nailed it!
This is awesome and you have mad skill!!! Thanks for showing us how and for the tab and all. Goal!
Musically this song fascinates me! Well played
Took 3 days, but I am mostly finished it, I just have to clean it up a little bit and I’m done
This is my favorite song!
Beach bunny- prom queen. Would LOVE to hear it
Amazing bass line!
Thanks for uploading this! I have been having an issue learning this one for a while.
His playing is beautiful!
2:06 on the G string. It's 3 fret to 4 fret. What is that transition called? just ''up a half step'' or does it have a name. It sounds out of key to me but in a good way.
Absolutely nailed the tone!
I Wish by Stevie Wonder pleeease!
Edit: I've come back to this song and honestly the little solos in the middle aren't even the hardest part, it's the fills that become pretty much constant having a point. Really hard to memorise and to keep up with.
Just amazing and groovy. Thank you!
So beautiful and so tricky! Very good job!
This just seems like a fun jam to play
to be fair i think people overreact to the shout chorus 1:04 because when you take the time to read it and break it down it really isn’t that bad it’s just the fills towards the end that would catch you off guard
Thank you man, your videos are awesome. This is on my list to learn after I finish learning I Want you Back.
Love your stuff man. Excellent. I am a relatively new bassist and I am working through various songs as a means of practice to improve my playing. I have a request for a song that you could do. Mmmm by the Crash Test Dummies. That is a great song with a really tasty bass line. Hope you can do it as I would love to learn how to play it. Thanks bro:-)
I bet you're great now
When I first looked at this song, I thought, no way! Now I might try it.
Can't wait to get my own bass and learn this
I played all the song man and it`s awesome! good cover.
Legend

Nathan Watts. Genius that nobody knows about.
Well done!
That is a hefty hefty hefty bass line right there
Perfect tab covers so helpful ❤
Love this
In the pocket. Reminds me of when I went to see Prince and anywhere in the concert he wanted to he would flash a hand signal to the NPG horns and they had to do the shout chorus from this song on cue
AMAZING!!!!!
Tougher than it looks, but amazing fun to play!!! Especially that ascending chorus part!
Street fighter ken's theme!!!! Pero no la parte del bajo, sino la que hace la guitarra que suena GENIAL en el bajo!
Absolutely outstanding! This is next up on my list. Thanks
Brilliant mate. Well done and thanks for the tabs.
amazing, amazing and again - amazing cover👍🏻🤝🏻
Merci pour cette leçon ! un vrai plaisir de jouer ce titre, enfin d'essayer !
Thank you This song is my entrance exam.
Some where big Nate (Stevie's bass player), is saying wtf. Man, you were flawless
DANG! Awesome
Excellent ! Brillant !... what can I say more ? I'm impressed, congratulations

I just know how much pain this is gonna cause me but I gotta do it man
Great Job! I love this performance!
