    I think the real story is how well the Prime series does. While the Ultra speakers sound better, there is not a great disparity. The Prime series has kept me happy for a very long time, and economically they offer a lot of bang for the buck.
    While inexpensive, they are certainly NOT a "cheap" speaker. The use of legitimate crossovers, a stout enclosure, and intensive tuning by SVS staff including Smith Freeman and Gary Yacoubian.
    In their goal to bring true high end audiophile sound to the masses, SVS has really hit the mark. The Prime series is very easy to recommend, and the ability to trade up within a year is icing on the cake. Order factory direct (through the "sub101.link" links above) to ensure 1 year trade up.
    The Ultra series is also a strong value, they easily punch above their weight with a gorgeous sound. The goal with the speakers in the SVS family was not to compete with speakers in the $1,000 and under range, but more the $2000+ range when it comes to the actual sound.
    There are certainly speakers that have more flash, and more exciting finishes, like Icelandic zebra wood blessed by the ancient monks of Antarctica, but otherwise the finishes are quality that could fit most decors.

    After much research and years of owning speakers (high end and pedestrian) I can say that my SVS ultra bookshelves are better built, and more capable than MUCH more costly speakers. I could name drop- starting with ATC SCM-12, the overpriced/underbuilt polk lsi/9, KEF, Tannoy, Dynaudio, Proac, signet and more. These speakers deliver neutrality, transparency and detail. They have the ballsiest slam I have yet heard from a 6.5" woofer 2 way. The illusion that more expensive boutique names have a more refined treble, is only because they lack the bass and extension of the SVS ultra.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 лет назад

      +Scott Lowell I've read some forum posts that echo your opinion. I never really understood the transparency concept until I heard something that really lived up to the promise. Even in the SVS Prime line with the Satellite speaker, you listen to the music without "hearing the speaker". Weird concept to define, but a real one. Thanks for the comment.

    I wouldn't bi amp with a receiver, simply because it's already strained from also handling audio and video processing on top of powering the speaker channels.
    Switching to external amplification yields far greater audible results than bi-amping with a receiver
    I added an Emotiva's BasX A-700 to my own system last year. The difference is amazing.
    I still can't get over how you have two PB-16's high end subwoofers, but are still using your receiver to power your speakers.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 лет назад +2

      I do want to add external amps to take some stress off of the AVR. You like the A-700?

    • @droidzhunterz6861
      @droidzhunterz6861 7 лет назад +2

      Very much. I have it powering my LCR + side and rear surrounds and my receiver is only powering a pair of Atmos speakers (9 channel processing)
      With the A700 I am able to run my JBL 290 towers in LFE+main, and set to large. My Marantz 6010 didn't like that by itself.
      The sound is now more punchy and dynamic overall.
      I know LFE+main is a controversial setting, but it works in my room complementing two PB-1000's

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 лет назад +2

      +Droidz Hunterz I think external amplification changes the story when it comes to LFE+ main. On an AVR, as you mentioned, it puts a little too much strain by itself.

    Great comparison! Im looking at the ultra bookshelves. Right now, I have Polk S60 towers. I know the ultras will sound better, but will they be as loud?? Thats what im worried about.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 месяцев назад

      Loudness is easily resolved by bumping the speaker levels, if it's a problem at all. Probably won't be.
      Are you using subs? Which subs and how many?
      They also just released the Ultra Evolution line, and the original Ultra line is on sale.
      Hard to say which I'd choose, the new series looks pretty impressive, but the Ultras on closeout will most certainly be less expensive.
      Assuming you are in the USA, you have the 1 year trade up too, so if you go with the closeout, you have a year to trade up to the Evolution line.
      I can't wait to hear the Evo line though.

    I have noticed that bi amping speakers is specially if they are high efficiency speakers doesn't make much difference in sound quality per se. Some people argue this, but as an audiophile continuously tests equipment in a controlled environment using a combination of different amplifiers and speakers, the audio performance produced is not really increased by that much at all. The drivers and crossovers will receive enough power at low RMS just fine, again if these are high-efficiency speakers like the SVS. The only benefit to bi amping is the increase in overall decibel output.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 лет назад +2

      With some of these things, the change is so small some might not hear a difference. Or there is no difference. It can be tiring, either way. Good feedback!

  • @jdmsz9378
    @jdmsz9378 7 лет назад +2

    Bi amping is not worth the extra wires trust me. All it does is separate high frequency and low frequencies in two separate amps of the avr. You're better off with external amplification like a emotiva or parasound.

      @Subwoofer101  7 лет назад

    It looks like this has become a huge debate... but when it comes to bi amping, I think many will agree that towers make it worth while, since the more a speaker stretches out the high from low frequencies the more sense it makes to separate the amps driving the tweeter and woofer. With a bookshelf, it still would improve the quality of sound being emitted from the loudspeaker, otherwise I am sure SVS wouldn't waste their time or money doing that lol. However, I do feel the prime towers offer enough bass especially when adding 1 or 2 subwoofers from SVS not to justify myself needing the ultra towers, but the bookshelf and center might be a great addition soon.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 лет назад +1

      That makes sense to me. The Prime Towers do offer great bass, I've bumped the crossover from 90 on the towers to 100 for the Ultra Bookshelf. Pretty happy with that setup.

    Two Prime Bookshelfs with two SB-3000s or two Prime Towers with one SB-3000, which one do you think will sound better in a roughly 1380 cubic feet room? I already have the SB-3000 and was planning to get a second one soon (don't have space for PB line). I'm also thinking about upgrading my 5 main speakers to Primes, either towers or Bookshelfs for Left and Right, Prime Center and Prime Satellites for surrounds. I won't be able to get two subs if I get the towers, so that's something I have to choose either/or.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 лет назад

      I'd go dual now, and trade up for the towers when you can, using their one year trade up. You'll get more satisfaction sooner that way, 100%.
      If you're down to support the channel, and it's no trouble, please follow one of my SVS affiliate links in this video description. Going directly to SVS (my links are direct) allows 1 year trade up, but going elsewhere, like Amazon, usually means losing the trade up. Handy to know if you plan to upgrade.

      I have the prime towers and center and a pb3000 but when I plug the pb3000 ports with the foam plugs it comes with it's still plenty powerful for action movies. I like your 2 sb3000 plan. I don't really have the room for that. The towers do chime in with a little bass but with 2 subs and bookshelves it's prob going to be at least as good or maybe better. Who the hell knows. Experts will tell you that the room is a huge factor and I think that is true so the only way to know for sure is to try both and see what you like. Then there is the whole Home theater vs music thing to take into account. These are nice problems to have though, are they not?

Would getting a pair of Prime Tower speakers and a SVS centre make a HUGE upgrade over my current set up? or which SVS speakers would be a real upgrade? Thanks so much

      @Subwoofer101  6 лет назад +2

      I haven't heard enough of Klipsch to comment confidently, but those who have made the switch seem to be happy with the decision. Mostly in store environments, which is not enough to truly gauge it.
      I really like the Prime Towers a lot, I spent a lot of time with them. They have a nice full, rich sound. The Ultra Bookshelf has a little more sparkle, but slightly less fullness to it. Hard to go wrong either way, but I do lean ever so slightly to the Prime Tower. I just couldn't say which I would prefer ultimately. The better choice doesn't smack me over the head. My decision would probably come down to what I could fit. I'm running the Ultra Bookshelf in the RV project because that's what fits.
      If the Ultra Center is in the cards, it's worthwhile. The Prime center is very good, the Ultra is just a little better. No hesitation mixing the Ultra Center with the Prime Towers, that combo would be great!

      Most of your movie dynamics will come from the subwoofer, but the difference between the Ultra Books and the Ultra Towers is pretty substantial. I strongly prefer the Ultra Towers.
      The books are great, but the MTM arrangement (mid-range tweeter mid-range) of the Ultra Towers is hard to beat. More clarity, without being shouty.
      Add to that the valuable reinforcement of the bass from the 8" bass drivers, and you do get more dynamics that way. Even set at Small and 90 hertz, the addition to the low end response is noticable.

    Great review and relevant for me. I have 15 yr old monster towers that I wanted to upgrade, and my AVR technology as well. My room is big and I was assuming that I should naturally go with a tower, but now looking at it very differently. Room is 100% used for movies. When available, I’d like to see the hands on review with the prime pinnacles vs the ultra bookshelves- see if I can save a little space in the room without losing what a full-size tower has to offer. Great channel- thanks for the work!

    Thanks, nice balanced review, I'm looking at the same choice and found it hard to say one way was better than the other, just some small differences that won't be apparent to most listeners most of the time. Going with the prime towers, they seem to fill the space a little more completely, if that makes any sense. Here's a twist, are you in Utah?

    I watch a lot of your videos and finally have to disagree with one thing you said. "Can't get any powerful bass from any speaker without a sub". I have an old set of Cerwin Vega D-9's and hooked up to at least a 200 watt r.m.s/ch amp (even 50 watts will drive excellent), they have amazing bass! Bass not only you can hear - but feel. Shake your house no problem! I do use a 10" sub for movies though Doesn't have to be as loud to get the same bass as speakers only).

    I would really have to say that bi amping speakers really does make a difference in the sound quality concerning music listening, but with movies and television or just video listening, I can't claim there really is a difference...at least with quality speakers. In the past I have always looked at a speaker and it's ability to be bi amped. However the main reason I bought the SVS prime towers, is their quality, specifically for movies. They are great for music as well, but I bought them for my home theater rooms not 2 channel listening areas. Running bi amplification in a home theater application, really does loose several wanted or desired channels inside of the amp and I have never seen anyone (go all out) and use multiple amps to bi amp every speaker in a home theater. To loose a few channels in a home theater is loosing speakers, but in a 2 channel dedicated stereo, usually you have the option of speakers A and B. That is meant specifically to bi amp, not usually 4 speakers. In my basement setup, I have every speaker on the floor bi amped, and I am loosing channels inside of the amp, but I prefer music listening there as opposed to the great sound the films portray. Even with the most expensive speakers I have ever heard, with a film soundtrack, it is really difficult to hear a real difference with the bi amping as opposed to normal conventional wiring. I would have to say bi wiring makes a difference for both movies and music though. Still it is a hard trade for extra channels in home theater over just wiring each speaker on its own. In a perfect world, yes bi amp ever speaker possible, but reality says its not worth the extra amps. Like everything in life it is a trade up, I would have to say the 2 front channels and maybe the center are the only speakers it really pays off to bi amp.

      +Puppies World The Prime Tower is an awesome speaker. It's really hard to pick a favorite in this case.
      I always appreciate your detailed feedback! I wonder if bi-amping is worth the hassle? I suspect more would be gained through quality external amplification.

      I wish I'd known of SVS ultra towers from my HT before I got klipsch reference. The SVS are more detailed, and dimensional with more articulate lower bass, smoother and much more transparent. The klipsch reference sound harsh by compare. Paradigm are polite and boring by compare.

    @Subwoofer 101, what can you said about the SVS ultra towers (1000$ each (Amazon USA Price)) and the Klipsch RF-7 II (1250 each (amazon USA price)). The svs's are cheaper, they are 5 way ? vs the 2 way. SVS's are also rated for 300w instead of the 250w on the Klipsch, but they have lower sensitivity, 88db vs 101db. Also if you run the svs ultra towers or the Klipsch RF-7 II with the 16 ultra subs, are you gonna set the towers to 40hz crossover or are you still gonna set them to 80 and use the subs ? Keep in mind i've only heard the pb-1000 with Dali zensor 5 speakers. I'm asking because i really started to like SVS's subs and when i have enough money and i go crazy, which one would be better for full buy?

      +Ricardo Valenzuela I can't speak from experience yet on the Ultra Towers, but I do know they are very impressive speakers. With dual 6" midrange, and the dual woofer configuration, it's going to be an upgrade over the Bookshelf. If you're not running external amplification, the bookshelf speakers may be the more reasonable choice.
      Your subs will certainly handle the low end if you go with the books. The Ultra Towers are pretty big, a consideration if you're low on space. They have a flare out design, getting wider going from front to back. It's a unique look, making quite the statement. If you have the power, space, and budget, the towers would be quite nice indeed.
      You also have the 1 year upgrade, so long as you order factory direct (my links are factory direct), so you could start with the books and upgrade if you feel the need. They will sound great when you first get them, but after 2-3 weeks they seem to sweeten up even more.
      I'm going to review the Ultra Towers at some point soon, and I'm really looking forward to it. The design is pretty awesome, and I like that they basically incorporate the dual sub theory into the tower.

    what do you think of 4 svs prime sats and the center channel to match with 2 pb1000.? in a 12x18 with 7 foot ceilings.?im trying to do it on a budget and still have quality products..thanks john

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 лет назад

      Hi John, I think that's a really good budget setup. I'm planning on doing a "cheat sheet", and that very setup is the starting point.
      The trick is to run the crossover on the Center at 90-110 Hertz, and the Satellites at 110-150 Hertz. Because the PB-1000's have a nice flat response, it won't sound boomy once you have it dialed in. You can watch how I set up my AVR: ruclips.net/video/Mfl_ttIrLVI/видео.html
      If you can follow my affiliate links before purchase, I would appreciate it. No need to follow a link for each product, this link will do the trick. sub101.link/PB-1000
      Going factory direct, (assuming US or Canada) you can trade up the Satellites for Prime Bookshelf or Prime towers within 1 year. You get full price credit, less shipping costs (1 year trade up is the only time you pay shipping), which is outlined in their "Bill Of Rights". Or you could add a Prime Tower or Bookshelf and shift the Satellite to Atmos duty or a 7.2 setup.
      While the Towers and Bookshelf speakers obviously do better, I have run the Satellites alone with Dual PB-16 Ultras. They really hold their own, especially with a higher crossover. Assuming you're coming from basic subwoofers (most people are) I think you will be really happy with that setup. You may not even feel the need to upgrade, but upgrade-itis runs strong in the home audio crowd.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 лет назад

      It's 80 watts per channel @ 8 ohms, 2 channels driven. Not a powerhouse, so you definitely want to run your speakers as small to transfer bass duties to the subwoofers.
      The Prime Tower sounds a little fuller, while the Ultra Bookshelf sounds a little more crisp. More sparkle. So long as you are running subwoofers, the Ultra Books will get you done quite nicely. Low end is less important when running subs. Just increase the crossover, assuming you're running deep subs. Typical, shallow subs will be trickier when increasing crossover levels.
      In your situation, I'd probably go with the Ultra Bookshelf and set the crossover around 90-120. Which subs are you using/planning to use?

    I’m a current Denon AVR owner, the biamping on our AVRs is only for the mains, not the center or even surrounds if we had a full Ultra system. It’s not a matter of extra amps or channels, it’s because the system is set up to only process biamping the mains. If you look at the diagram of the rear panel in the manual, you’ll see the biamping terminals are shared with height (or maybe wides). My 7200 has 9 amps built in. I can biamp 7.1 or go 7.1:2 (2 Atmos is my current configuration). I have run the biamp with my Paradigm Monitor p90 v1, there was a bit more clarity. But, running Atmos is a higher priority.
    Hit the SETUP button, SPEAKERS/MANUAL SETUP/AMP ASSIGN then go through all of the ASSIGN MODE options and sub-options to see if you have something that may allow for the center biamping. I don’t have a 9.1 with biamping option, yours might. It’s nuts, I can have an extra set of mains and biamp that extra set, but there is no center channel biamp. I would call Denon to pick their brains about it.
    I’m actually considering the Ultra Center at some point to start my SVS transition from Def Tech. I don’t think that thing will fit under my tv on the stand which is already at its highest point LOLOL. I’ve asked SVS on one of their videos if it had adjustable feet, at this time it does not. Hopefully when I’m ready to buy, the new version will be able to pointed up. My tv is 7 feet away, the center is about chest high and I have it pointed up at my head. It makes a difference, especially when running Audyseey. I can hear a difference when I recline in my chair.
    Sorry if I’m rambling, hope I was helpful.

      +Dave B. Very helpful! I use felt pads to elevate the center channel.
      I'm kind of glad they don't come with feet since it would make them taller. I had to cut the brackets on my TV stand to raise the TV high enough. With the Prime Center I had plenty of room, now it's really close to the bottom of the screen again with the Ultra Center, which is honestly a good thing sonically.
