If I could afford it I would totally hire you for singing lessons! I've rewinded through this video dozens of times and I'm going to learn this technique! Finally! A million thank you's!

      kel m Yes, it is. If you have a piano or guitar it can really help to play the notes separately then together before you sing them. Sort of tune yourself into it.

    I really appreciate these lessons. I was a classical flutist in high school and decided not to pursue a career in music. so I never learned a lot of music theory, only enough to read advanced flute music.since then I've done a lot of vocal work, sometimes reading music, sometimes learning Harmony's from RUclips for particular songs, sometimes improvising.
    I really appreciate the music theory and your lessons. Thank you!

    Saher, I want to thank you very, very much. I can harmonize by ear, but it is so nice to be taught the theory behind it. Also it opens the door for many, many other options. I was bored with my cookie cutter harmony & as my girlfriend & I write music, it is so important because our original sound obviously makes or breaks the song.

    I have watched quite a few videos on harmonizing and usually they just taught how to find a major third above the melody, so whenever I tried to harmonize, I failed miserably or just kept on singing major third intervals all the time. Thank you so much for this video! It's the first that worked for me and made my singing more confident!

      I was the same way, all I can tell you is the more you do it the better you get. However, now I'm stuck in a hole where I sing what I enjoy rather than what sounds better so the harmony normally sounds more like a minor chord

    • @TrillNoel

      Download a piano app. Play one key with the music. Eventually you will find one that works... then once you toy around with it youll find other keys to add. Work on finding one note that can be held then when you are ready try to add two or more. 3rds and 5th are your friends.

    • @SolarMumuns
      @SolarMumuns 5 лет назад +9

      Amanda Liu Yes, pianos/keyboards will help to visualize and remember the sound of the intervals (a major 3rd or perfect 5th or whatever). There are also ear-training apps available. Thirdly, sing along with songs that use basic harmony vocal lines like those in very early Beatles tracks, where it's just two or three people singing together. Try to pick out the melody and the harmony part(s). Lastly, play a simple melody on another instrument or record yourself singing and harmonise it yourself. Best of luck!

  • @viewer2114

    I actually learned how to harmonize on 4th grade without learning how to do it, I only need to know the melody part. I've been using the thirds technique without knowing it exists for 5 years! I helped around 5 people learn how to blend through hearing only, but it wasn't technical learning, and you have to consistently harmonize even in audio songs to not forget how to harmonize.

    this is the best video so far (together with your first video). your video makes a lot of sense and with fact. i have seen other vocal harmony tutorials and none really emphasize on the importance of learning it from the basic, which is to sing on the 3rd (most basic and ear pleasing). thank you so much!

    Yes I would love for you to do a video for singers who have been singing Harmony their whole life. I have been singing Harmony by ear since I was literally in kindergarten but I do not have a broad palette as you described it. I could arrange a four-part southern gospel song in my sleep as well as write Barbershop tags all day. But if you ask me to come up with an arrangement similar to a Take 6 arrangement I would be lost.

    1:44 advanced harmony means knowing how simple ingredients like relations of notes to each other end up sounding so that you can make music based on knowing that a third relation sounds maybe sweet while a 1st interval is disonant like playing two notes right 1 step from each other.= experience

    Definitely very helpful. I was always unsure on how to write harmonies, so I tend to just stick with the lead melody (obviously it left the vocals sounding a little lacking), but I'll definitely be using these techniques in the future. I will admit though; while I didn't have trouble with the exercises, that "trailing scale" at 5:20 is pretty tricky to pull off...
