As a novice near the sewers, being mobbed by bugs and helped by this swordsman guy passing by, saving my life and asking me to join him so he could help me level and become a swordsman too, he was almost going for the knight quest. I would later get to know his wife and son. A natural spontaneous friendship that i will never forget this game for. Nostalgia at its finest.

You get pretentious stuff like WoW Hardcore at most but even so, it's a hype fed by ecelebs and such. Then there's FF XIV, which has a rather shallow overworld experience, and most socialization occur to static groups level. The only moment in modern MMOs where this happened was during their honeymoon-launch phases such as TES honeymoon phase which was to me one of the best in modern MMOs, yet that was all the way back in 2014 or so, and given the difficulty of outworld encounter with enemies and bug-ridden launch, they would then have to nerf it

I tried to replay ragnarok recently, to have some little fun with a childhood game, and i gave up after some time exactly because of that. No parties, everybody play solo, and every where i tried, looks like solo play was even more encoraged. Maybe i felt that more because i play more party dependent roles like tank and support, and felt asking the exact same question "Is it me? Am i doing something wrong?"

Great video! The only reason I got to play RO back when I was 16 (33 now) was via private servers. When Renewal dropped and it became F2P I decided to join iRO and pay for VIP and while it was fun, (got an FS Archbishop to 115), the game had changed way too much from what I used to love. On private servers you get to be part of a small community, while on iRO I constantly felt isolated despite the thousands of active players (and oh God, the bots).
Fast forward to recent times, and the only thing Gravity has done to bring attention to the game is via cracking down on loved private servers. I get the point about copyright infringement and all that, but private servers exist for the sole reason that Gravity keeps going in a direction the more dedicated playerbase doesn't want to go in.
Hypermonetization tactics, closing down server regions (and iRO Classic) and refusing to implement simple QoL improvements that private servers have had since the beginning (@mi, @whodrops, @whosell and so on) keeps the official version of the game both stagnant and not worth to invest money into.

It's always a good day when there's a new Amber Evelyn video! I recently returned to the game and main a ranger as well. I found this guild full of old players that have returned to RO and they have been absolutely amazing. They are super friendly and what I like the most about iRO since returning. It's the Gatecrashers guild. I will RODEX you, J_son.
Onto the gear aspect. I'm fortunate in a sense that 1) I have a fair bit of disposable income and 2) I returned with a couple of storages full of gear from years past that I could sell. Even with all of that considered, in the last month I think I've put $200 into iRO and in total about 10b in gear and I still have an incomplete build... Granted I can 1 shot a LOT of stuff. However, getting to the 1 shot phase is just more fwing/AS spam. That doesn't resolve the 1 player aspect of the game. Two Ring of Ceynian alone are like 10b. I think fully geared BIS Ranger will probably cost more than 40b. It's a money pit for sure. The game is now built around EVERYONE being able to one shot whatever they are hunting. This is in direct conflict with party play. Why would anyone party when everything dies in 1 click?
My game errors all the time. I've looked at Gravity's outdate FAQ and support pages, even on the forums lots of these error posts go unanswered. The resolutions to manually patch the game are dated and have broken links. These errors are just something we have to suffer through for now I guess. I wish they would add some of the other dungeons but they only seem interested in adding cash shop items and none of the content. Thanks for another awesome vid though! Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Ragnarok Online was definitely nostalgia from high school (2000) to maybe a bit post college (2009) for me. At first it was iRO beta, but didn't have the money to pay for it online so switched to private servers back then. Boy what a TIME SINK it was back then and I only made it to a level 82 Hunter (bow and arrow, with hawk) which was considered a fast leveling job back then.
I love how you were deadly honest about leveling too. Most of Ragnarok's broken systems only make sense in the early game: like before level 35~40.
I'm talking about slow HP/SP regen taking minutes to get to full, and the fact that you sit to increase your regen rate, and there are no healing NPC even in towns. That game isn't designed for you to sustain a battle with a monster by executing some strategy of offense and defense based on the specific monster type. Monsters are damage sponges, and damage dealers. At some point the damage dealt by certain jobs is so high, they have to scale up the damage monsters deal too much to make them actually dangerous.
Oh and then movement -- early game monsters move slow. You can run from most of them when you find yourself dying. Later game, nope.
The weight limit on characters also means you are forced to go back to town to drop your loot -- which seems fair, but when you learn it's tied to your character's strength stats and many jobs have absolutely no use for strength otherwise, it becomes silly. Only swordsmen/melee based characters are meant to reasonably carry loot while fighting in a dungeon?
Even the EXP scaling was a terrible grind. If you fought monsters you could "sustain" fighting in terms of damage in/out, you were getting super low exp and had to kill thousands, or tens of thousands of them to level up a few percent. If they are dangerous enough and you slip up and die: you lost a percent of exp. I remember that amount of exp being like...1-2 hours of "leveling" for someone close to level 90. Even worse when you're in the upper 90s. People would literally spend a week just to gain 1 level. And notoriously back then, to get from level 98-99 (old cap), it required the same amount of exp as half of the journey between 1-98 took.

thank you for being one of the few who show how badly this game has gotten. People love to parrot their love for this game by remembering the good old days, high on copium with nostalgia glasses on trying to ignore why the game has fallen off. I played pre ren, renewal years, on and off, and eventually finally decided to quit few years ago with no desire to ever return again. The only nostalgia i have left for this game is the bgm, i'm so done with the game. It has a lot more wrongs than rights than people want to admit. It has aged poorly, and has no future, especially with the way gravity ran it through the ground. I blame korean gaming culture for this, p2w, rng and grinding like a second work is the norm for them, global community is a second citizen to them, they have had this issue back then and still now, they'll never learn. Look at lost ark, bdo, etc etc, the list of dead, struggling korean mmo is a meme within the mmo community. They have not fixed their image of this for a decade. I see it not changing.

It's obvious that Ragnarok has a lot of flaws built into its foundation as a Korean MMORPG with tons of grinding. But the gameplay can still be a lot of fun until you eventually reach the level where the extreme grinding, pay to win, etc. becomes unavoidable and by then it's just too much.
But the most memorable thing about the game for me is its aesthetics. It's just amazing. The art style is so beautiful; the pixel art is gorgeous; all the cute characters, cool designs, equipment, monsters, the animations, the environment, the mix of 2D sprites and 3D. The music and sounds, too. The whole aesthetic and vibe of Ragnarok is one of the best in gaming IMO and I really wish we could see it replicated again, in a more user friendly game or remake.

LMAO. you're lucky to get a patch in each year with almost nothing. remember how long it took for the devs to fully "implement" and "fix" 3rd job/renewal? almost four years. and even then it was still an absolute mess. samsung(gravity) has always doomed RO and private servers has always been the driving factor for playability. if it wasn't for free RO pirated servers, this game would have disappeared around the 2010s for sure.

I felt the same way. I was told at around the 150 mark, that's kind of the breaking point where you can potentially start really getting stronger and there's some quest gear sets etc that are decent. Thing is, just as you mentioned, it's not how I enjoyed ragnarok back in the days of alpha/beta/and release in 2003 for NA. So unfortunately, I've kind of thrown iro to the side and delved back into the pserver world again on a nice classic server with a little bit of custom content, no cash shop as of yet (tho talking about it for cosmetic only) and they really push for party leveling and not just soloing the whole time, though that can also be done just like before. It's been a great time, but it is classic in the full sense, it is 1x just as it was back in the day, so the grind is there, but I've really enjoyed it because I'm once again playing with people and making good friends in game. Completely feel where you're coming from though for sure.

I played since BETA launch, for way more than a decade. I loved RO, but the grind in this game is INSANE. As much as I made precious memories (because the people I met, some are my friends to this day) I will never waste again a second of my life grinding like I used to do in RO.
The grinding is a way to slow progress, so the players feel engaged for a longer time, which increases the chances for the players to expend money on the game. It's a strategy for most classic MMOs.
But, as I grew older, I realized that my only real currency was not money, but TIME, and RO demands LOTS of it. So I reached a point in my life that I couldn't grind anymore, because my currency (time) gets less and less as it passes by. So I quit. That's what happened with most of my friends that also quit. We all love Ragnarok to this day, but the grinding is absurd and I don't have the luxury to expend the rest of my life with it.
What I think, in a deeper sense, is that me and my friends grew old, while Ragnarok quite remained the same, like a "Peter Pan" that refused to acknowledge that life changes: it didn't grow with us. We "outgrew" Ragnarok, the game that is an eternal child demanding full attention.
Then, as old players quit, the new generation of MMO players prefers modern games/MMOs, then RO gets empty, therefore, for the remaining of RO's players, that makes even harder to grind (honestly, grinding alone is a torture, I could only tolerate it because me and my friends would voice chat during our gameplay).
This pattern of MMO's death also happened in other MMOs in a similar way, like Anarchy Online (a masterpiece of sci-fi MMO in my opinion). It's truly sad, but it's a part of life.
(sorry for broken English, not my main language)

Its really hard now. People use to make step by step guides for you to level to max. Also maximizing gear makes a huge difference in the game. Just swapping out accessories or shadow gear can turn around a whole build. Since there is no guides and very few vids to copy you really have to learn a lot by yourself. Go to izlude and shoot at eggs until you maximize your damage. If you see a person in izlude that plays ranger don't be shy. Ask for advice. Ive met so many people that were kind and would open their gears for me or look at my gear to tell me what im doing wrong. Ranger is a very popular class. Im sure someone can help you out.

I saw an ad about this, and thought hol-f-sh. But I first checked this out, its sad to see the game has zombified like this. The community was what made this game exceptional. It's the only thing in my life that got me addicted to something. But this was when I was a young teen haha.
Seeing you leveling, its just grinding to grind. You're not doing anything wrong, these mobs were made for 2-3 man parties. The only thing i would like to do is do MVPíng with a friend, but like you said, ''time'' is what we dont really have anymore.
Thank you for showing us this honest opinion.

Did the exp rate change? Cause for me, it looks like you getting exp pretty fast...

To get even 1% took hours of grinding while mobbing.

i used to play RO back in the days and i remember hours of grinding is the main activity in this game. you made 6% exp in 2 minutes you where farming there for the showcase. i think that's pretty good leveling speed, tbh i think it's way to much exp you are getting there. with that pace you'd be level up in 20 mins. even if you have to go back to town and shop for potions you can easily get your level up in under 1 hour. i don't get it what's to complain about the situation

Ragnarok online was my first mmo back in 03. I remember starting and there was a girl character that that spawned next to me. They asked if I was new and I told them I was. Turns out they were too so we decided to stick together and try to figure the game out. when we made it to the first town, she said we should try to find someone to help us cuz the beginning didnt give us any gear to work with. So, i just gold begged in the corner like a bum. Some dude a chocubo looking bird told me to quit begging and go out and make the gold myself. then went back to being a statue. called him an asshole and dipped lol. I ran into her again while running from the dude, she found a group that was willing to help us. I remember they took us to some desert place to farm. they obviously did most of the work. We decided to rest so they could get some health back and decided to chat for a bit. they asked why I wasnt sitting down and it would help me heal faster. I pressed the button and said I couldn't, turns out I was just under the level we got to sit. They laughed and said its fine, they'll wait longer for me.
there hasnt been an mmo besides maybe gaiaonlines zomg game that ive played with a community that engaging with each other. Ragnarok just feels dead, i don't see events being hosted, new dungeons or things to do. I mean I think Iro is behind jro and kro, and its been that way for years. why the fuck do i want to climb a treadmill for gear and loot for content i know is several years old, and they just pump shit into the shop to buy that made all your grinding useless. They had some fucking audacity to go after private servers when those owners probably put more effort into the game and community than gravity ever did.

I remember back when I first played. Same experience. Community helping one another. On my server, we traveled from Payon to prontera by foot (newbies were too poor to teleport using kafra). We helped one another to fend off wolves and other aggressive monsters on the way. Some acolytes healed random people who got attacked. Some dropped arrows and potions for people. It was just walking, but it was that experience that made it memorable.

Years later, like after the pandemic, I learned there was a mobile version of this game, so I hopped on it out of curiosity, feeling somewhat excited because of nostalgia, and I thought I'd be making some new friends again. But nope, I was wrong...is it just me? Or do people nowadays just don't talk to each other anymore on MMORPGs? Or people are just super weird, or just wanna RP all day. I dunno, I just kinda miss how it was before, playing online in general.

(player from 2004 here) my take on this; without a party, leveling like crazy is just not fun and that is okay. instead enjoying the mood, the scenery, building different characters, trying to make them overpowered in some way or simply said, fooling around and immersing myself in the game was what made it fun. back in the day, it was all about our small party. the big guilds weren't that interesing but like you said, one needs dedicated friends to form a fun party. easy back than, impossible nowadays.
my tip for you woudld be; stop leveling and instead start having fun again. or maybe run your own server, back in the day it was quite easy and for endgame feeling or testing it was a lot of fun.

  • @vividort
    @vividort Год назад +2

It sucks that party play is actually way more efficient as well you just need some setup and skills and exp goes way faster but most players dont ever bother which is a shame, the whole Arrow Storm ranger never looked enticing to me but it has been the staple for the class since forever. I believe jRO was the first to took notice of the whole renewal balance and how it usually favored a single skill for the whole class and started doing some changes and making new gears to make different builds viable which eventually led to OCP in iRO once players found out about it, in past few years gravity actually made some good changes on gears and skills but it just takes forever to be implemented which is the worst part about it, 2023 and we still at snails pace update on iRO :/ & when we get it its all broken
P.S.: now that I think about it why most rangers don't use camouflage more often? Its a very strong skill, too many insect & demon races I guess? Feel like using camouflage instead of fly wings would be better in a lot of situations.

My girlfriend and I played til like 120ish during the lockdowns for some good good nostalgia and I agree 1000% with your complaints.
Had fun leveling up just the two of us but it’s just a fundamentally different game than it was 20 years ago. We went back to it again for fun a few months ago and it felt like a ghost town for sure…
Ragnarok will always be special to us and it was such a weird mix of nostalgia and sadness seeing how different it is now.
Wish they’d do something more for the new player experience since 90% of gameplay was us looking up guides.
I just think there’s too much emphasis on monetization that left the game a mix of confusing power levels
Even with my own complaints there will always be something fun about that early grind though 😊 Late game is just a mess though.
If even 5% of those AFK shop people/bots played then things would be so different, makes me bummed remembering Prontera back in the day

this is the reason i don't play official servers anymore. firstly, the community on those pesky, illegal pServers is way more helpful, supporting, active and overall more party-focussed than on official. if i wanna play a singleplayer-game, i play something on my playstation.
secondly, the bigger problem is gravity doesn't know it's own game as it seems (questionable rewbalacing shit that makes things worse), and tries to milk money out of it with the most balance-broken stuff imaginable in the cash-shop. most (non-cashgrab) pServers are way more balanced and completely ignore overpowered gears in cash-shops/etc and try to make the game as it was 15 years ago: just fun...

I think Gravity is going all in on the Mobile Market with all the different RO Mobile iterations and I think they'll just let RO1 be funded by the whales until it gets to a point where it is no longer profitable and shut it down. Probably that's why they started with the pServer Lawsuits so they scare players away from pServers and are hoping they hop onto either the RO Mobile Gaming or RO1 and become a whale for it. But yea this game gives an insane nostalgia hit, been playing since 2006. If you're into a bit of lore with the game check out the Requiem of the Lost Webcomics. It's all about the famous Biolabs Monsters/Lighthalzen Lore that I believe majority of RO Players enjoyed.
