Some police departments have the 'donut code' of being complacent. They'd rather settle for a quick arrest and conviction than doing the proper indepth investigations.
By the same token though, police are not responsible for convictions. Prosecutors are the ones filing the charges and putting them on trial, so they should also be making sure that the investigations are air-tight. But it seems that many prosecutors only care about "wins" instead of actual guilt.
Sad but true i don't know if inappropriate to say they're lazy to do their homework.😢

Hope he got compensation for the slip-shod treatment he got from local law enforcement and the court.
@@jamesb.9155 He did, twice. Once for his wrongful conviction for which he received a million plus dollars from the State of Ohio, and five plus million from Summit County in a civil lawsuit he filed a couple years later against the police. He was also exonerated.

@@suzannegriffiths4795 Wow! Sounded like Clarence was not such a good husband to start with - but the woman did the right thing and found the murderer of her mother. The mother had very bad marriages which rubbed off on her daughter. Unfortunately everyone was hurt by all this - the murdered mother - the two sisters - their children. Tragic.

I hope Melinda was encouraged to either go into forensic science or to work with the Innocence Project. On a related note...the prosecutor's excuse as to why Clarence's DNA wasn't a match doesn't make any sense. If they're going to assume that the test was contaminated, they should've assumed the same thing for Melinda's 1st suspect and retested everything again. It just seems like they're trying to protect their conviction rates more than get ACTUAL justice for Judith.

I agree with you on that. Look up Tim Masters.. I was in prison with him. The fact is he was my first celly. They locked him up for 10 years for a murder. He supposedly committed when he was 15 years old and they came after him after you turn 27 or 26 I don’t remember exactly when, but it was quite some time after this murder happened in Fort Collins Colorado check that out I did a little time in prison in Colorado
They don't actually care about justice. Not even judges. They only care about how they look.

In my years as a legal secretary l know there are judges who do not deserve the title “Your Honor”. God only knows how many innocent men were sent to prison by a judge too lazy to pay attention to the testimony being presented.

The jury is also to blame. They voted to convict based on eye witness testimony of a 6 year old girl. Everything else was circumstantial. I also think those on the jury believed he was guilty simply because he was on trial. I wonder how much time they took in discussing the case. I'm guessing they didn't debate very long, but I haven't seen the entire video.
It’s impossible to accept the police and prosecution’s obtuse attitude! They have huge responsibility and immense power on people’s lives, thus should act in a more careful and respectful manner. Their laziness they have shown in investigating this case not only has put an innocent person in jail, but has potentially left a killer on the loose. Huge admiration for the strong woman who has solved the case! You are the best!
The biggest barrier to justice for the wrongly accused/convicted is the egos of prosecutors and judges who don't want to consider and admit they were wrong.
Melinda's family needs to kiss her feet and beg forgiveness every day. Some people wish and pray they had a spouse to stand with them, and stand for them. I'm proud of you, Melinda. Your Mum is proud of you, too.
The fact that Clarence sued for divorce 1 year after his release - also after that Clarence filed for 1million then 5 million - hope Melinda and her boys got 1/2 of the settlement.

@@LJ-ht4zs he didn't get 5 million. His lawyers took 2 million and the rest divided between him, Melissa and one of their kids. However, IRS came knocking and taxed Melissa and the kid heavily

I always like watching crime documentaries, this one is by far the most amazing stories I have ever seen, I really love how the victims daughter fight for what she think is right, she is more intelligent than those police who have first investigate her moms crime..She is an amazing wife and and amazing daughter...this story should be in the big screen...

He ģot out in 2005. He also filed for a divorce in 2006. Their divorce was finalized in 2007 although Melinda wanted to make her marriage work. Clarence also received over $1 million in a settlement. He protest against Melinda from making a movie about all of this. Both of them have new spouses. But she did what she had to do for her mother and Clarence. She also went on to reunite a baby who was stolen at birth and sold 50 years ago by a doctor, with its rightful family...
Sick and tired of divorced in america satan the demon destroying families and divorce is one of the tool to disintegrate families. I'm afraid out of 10 marriages 9 ended in divorce a sad reality.

It should because most people haven't heard of it. If they can get a big time Hollywood actress to play Melinda, it'll do well at the box office. People love movies based on true events.
@V. Villa Agree. It needs to be a movie for sure .. but they need to change the ending because that husband who was wrongly convicted actually ends up divorcing her in the end! Unbelievable.. Change the story so that they have a second honeymoon or some happy ending, then it will be a hit.
It's sad that even the judges don't care about justice.
I think there's more to it than not caring about justice. I think they're more concerned about having their colleagues' backs. They're all lawyers and in the "good ole' boys' club." Kind of like a union where they protect each others' jobs. None of them want a black eye and none of them want to admit that after all of the time and money spent on a conviction, they were wrong. But the top ranking attorney in the state of Ohio didn't see it that way and he stood up for justice. Maybe putting his career on the line to do that....what if he'd been wrong?

I think she was just going off the hatred her grandma sowed of her son in law!! People have to be careful of what they discuss in front of children. They are listening and much smarter than we give credit for… The grandma painted him as an evil guy so the little girl was like “it was him”…… She was still wrong about the eye color. The killers eye color is not brown … tragic!!
I’m in total awe of Melinda’s persistence, determination and guts, I wish I had a quarter of it.
This is exactly why today eyewitness accounts are seen as the weakest form of evidence and why some people (like myself) are against the death penalty. Thanks to forensic scienctists for DNA analysis and scientific phylosophy overall in that we can NEVER be ABSOLUTELY certain about anything in life. What a fantastic story of heroism on Melinda's part and forgivness on Clarance's part towards his neice and all his other in-laws who turned against him. Tonya Brazil (the neighbor) should've been charged for obstruction of justice.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT! I wondered why the neighbour's first response wasn't to take the injured little girl to hospital or at least call for an ambulance. I find it very very ironic that the daughter who fought for her husband's innocence was rejected by her family for standing by him AND the brutal perpetrator was shielded by another woman. One of the best overviews of a specific crime I've ever come across: definitely stranger than fiction.
Also the wife who stood by her husband Clarence - he asked for a divorce 1 year after his release - also he got at least 1 M settlement afterwards - hopefully it was shared with his ex-wife.

Why would an adult leave a little girl covered in blood saying that her grandmother was murdered on someone's couching and just leave?! Sounds to me like Brook would certainly know if it was a family member !! 6 or not She knew enough to call her friend and leave a message she knew enough to go to a neighbor. I wouldn't doubt a little girl who was there and has been through something so traumatic. If he didn't do it out assuming that it's somebody who looked like in the dark Her uncle. We used to rely so heavily on eye witness accounts but have since realized eye witnesses in the middle of a traumatic event like this are highly unreliable. Say little Brooke’s mind blacked out in order to protect her… in those cases it is not uncommon for your mind to fill in these small blanks. There is really no way to know if that memory is real. Also if there is a lot of discussion about how Clarence and grandma didn’t get along, this could have also influenced her thinking.
At this age kids are just starting to figure out how the world works. I remember my daughter at that age. We ran into her school teacher who approached us and tried to speak to my daughter who is normally outgoing and social. Even with encouragement she didn’t say a word. When the teacher walked away I asked her what was wrong. She said “how did my teacher get out of the school?” Wait what?! At this age they are still developing their understanding of the world around them.
In the dark, in the middle of a traumatic incident with her age, being injured and probably having limited interactions with strange men, it’s no surprise that size, height, age similarities would make her think it was her uncle. Her mind can’t conceptualize what she doesn’t know.

But yes! There have been many innocent people arrested due to the false testimony of an eye witness. Really through no fault of their own, it was how the investigation was carried out. Police line ups & those photo books have very distinct ways it should be introduced to the victims or eye witnesses. I just watched a story on this the other day & the research carried out due to many false arrests.
The 911 call is ignored as Brooke said on it "Somebody" attacked her and her Grandma Not My Uncle!? That's a Clue Right There if it was the Uncle and they believe a Traumatised 6yr old was Very Intelligent why didn't she say on that 911 call it was my Uncle Clarence!!?? That's the First thing I picked up on immediately after watching only the first ten minutes or less, Anybody else?? It's a decrepency that Should have been Brought up Immediately. 🤔 Would a Uncle and (I KNOW THEY DO Rape Nieces) Seriously Rape the Then 6yr old Niece After Raping the Grandmother That's as F@#KED up as Many Serial Killers who are Completely Demented But an Uncle who was home at 2.40am and the Attacks were between 2.30am and 5.30am!!?? How could you not check the next door who was a criminal? One bad example of poor police work. Terrible to put someone innocent in prison. Clarence didn't deserve his loyal faithful wife. Their marriage was rocky because he was immature and more interested in drinking with his buddies than being a husband and father and he was sometimes violent to his wife. If he hadn't gone out drinking that night the charges against him wouldn't stack up. His MIL hated him for a reason and everybody knew it. I am glad he was vindicated in the end and I hope he appreciates the long suffering wife who saved him in the end.

His DNA was in the little girl's underwear where it's pretty unlikely to have gotten under innocent means.

Clarence was not a very good husband anyway, so she's better off with her new man. But, bad husband, or not, he was innocent of this senseless murder, and assault on a 6 year old girl.
This must be the worst police investigation in history. They fail to notice that there is a convicted sex offender living next door to the victim, who even asked police why he hadn’t been arrested yet, they take no DNA and then they base the whole case on the testimony of a 6-year old.
What a scandal. Not only terrible for the man wrongfully convicted, but also there is no justice for the victims and they left a murderer and sex offender on the streets. Investigators responsible should all lose their jobs.

She was almost dead. I’m sure she also knew her own home phone number but the only number she could think of was her friend’s and that’s who she called.

This is absolutely heartbreaking! It was pressure on the child to say a name! When she left a voicemail on her friend phone! She said “someone” killed my grandma! If it was her uncle she would of said my uncle killed my grandma! Someone pressured her to give a name! With it being a smaller town, it wouldn’t surprise me if the neighbor was aware of the rift between GMA and Clarence. What took so long for the neighbor to get Brooke home and why didn’t she call the police?
My guess is that Tanya was brainwashing her, implicating Clarence. Children of that age are easily influenced. They almost got away with it for real.

This is why i will forever hate when police use eye witness only as evidence to charge someone for murder because what if the person is lying because they hate the person or what if they make a mistake because the person can bear a resemblance to the real killer among other reasons its not right to do that and this case is living proof of that to me . They need to stop being lasy go all out and try to do all the work necessary to fine the killer or killers of crime and stop taking the short cut easy way to have one less unsolve crime on there hands it is cruel and all it does is destroy the life of innocent people .that is why to this day innocent people is in prison . I think calling what the police did an investigation is stretching the term a lot. The term incompetent is doing a lot of heavy lifting as well. I find it hard to believe you can be that incompetent at your job and still have said job. In fact I find it hard to believe it was incompetence and not actively malicious, and not just the police, but the judge too for allowing this to happen. Eye witness accounts are essentially worthless, and the judge should know that. Eye witness accounts from a child are beyond worthless and anyone who's met a child should know that.

I cannot even begin to say how deeply disturbing it is that so many innocent men..women..and children are wrongly convicted in crimes. Clarence if you are reading this..just know that We all know how deeply you were failed by a very sloppy and incomplete investigation. The cat in the bushes prove that the investigating officers failed to look for real evidence and that had they questioned all of the events of that day..including why an injured girl was not taken by ambulance and 911 called would have sealed the deal on the case. I pray God heals the trauma that you suffered and that He sees that not only physical justice was served..but that a great monetary gain was granted to you for your pain and suffering. I think we'd all like to imagine we'd do the same if we believed in our Spouse But it Takes Great Guts to go searching Bad Guys for their DNA in pubs etc Melinda is One GUTSY CHICK!! Nothing in this case added up from the Very Beginning First Brooke says on her first call that "Somebody" Killed my Grandma Not Uncle Clarence which would be Fresh in her mind even after the Attack as She was and is a Very Intelligent Girl able to Find the phone (i missed why it was outside?) But Prosecutor's Ego's are Notorious for Refusing to Admit they Screwed up But the Police did 💩 to follow through and Investigate this Crime Properly from the Getgo did they even speak with the woman next door did they canvass the neighbours? When the neighbour left Immediately she returned Brooke to her Mother without so much as a Conversation was Very Suss and i have to wonder why the police Never questioned that as it seems? Eye witnesses are already not very reliable, not for any particular desire to deceive but because not many have above average face-recognition abilities (which is about of 90% of accuracy) and in cases of “average”, which are the majority, the accuracy is of 60%, add that it’s a shocking event, that one probably doesn’t have the normal time to observe and to concentrate on their appearance given that our priority is to put ourselves into secure situation now add that’s a 6 years old… it shouldn’t be use as the only information to convict someone.
Personally I don’t use to look at someone’s face directly because I am an introvert and still can’t remember all my classmates faces after a year, I wouldn’t trust myself to identify a criminal unless he or she had a very distinct characteristic like a huge scar on their face, no way I would dare to incriminate someone because me being 100% sure is me actually being below 60% accurate in the identification that may cost someone’s freedom.
Detectives didnt do their due diligence to make sure rhey got the right criminal. Especially, the uncle where there wasn't any physical evidence.
