- In one of my videos about busting common tank myths, I addressed the notion that modern tanks like the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 have shot traps because they incorporate heavily angled armor which could theoretically ricochet shots into vulnerable areas. For the Abrams, I pretty much just said that APFSDS would most likely shatter on the upper front plate and left it at that. Since some spirited debate has arisen since then, I figured it would be a good idea to publish a more nuanced take. Expect some regular War Thunder content on Saturday.

In GHPC, we modeled the upper glacis of the Abrams in such a way that it reliably shatters long rods at its intended angle, nullifying the shot trap. However, if the hull is on a slight down slope, it completely ruins the effect and creates a massive weak zone due to the thin armor. I believe this is fairly true to real life.
If you do some hulldown on top of a hill or a small obstacle , your front hull should be upered so it doesn't append. In real life tank to tank combat, it should be like that. Not a real problem for every fight but still can be a weak spot for the new generations of APFSDS. Sorry for the bad english, it is not my first language
Whats armor like in GHPC? Is it a click and pen fest like WT seems to be? Or does frontal armor actually matter at all? Its a game ive kinda kept on my radar, but havent really looked heavily into yet. Saw it finally added the M1IP, lookin forward to when the M1A1 and A2 get added.
@@CMDRFandragon Armor in GHPC is modeled as close to reality as we can reasonably make it. It's only a "click and pen fest" for certain targets that lack good composite armor. The M1IP, for instance, has phenomenal protection from the front, and the T-72M1 gives the M60A3 some trouble too.

@@CMDRFandragon Imagine WT sim mode with fully simulated fire control systems and individual realistic gun sights, and that's about how it will work mechanically. But the gameplay itself will be nothing like WT. We're focusing on scenarios, campaign stuff, and PvE. You can try the free public demo if you like - it's very early so the test missions are super basic, but you'll get a sense of where we're going.

As the game stands right now, you can shoot through the upper front plate of the M1A2 with a 75mm round from a Sherman... there is something wrong with the armor model

This is 100% accurate. I worked with 25 armor engineers. Their entire job with his sell upgrades to other nations M1s.
Most of his famous studies have been completely taken out of context. When dealing with darts, every single variable matters.
Metal does weird things at 3000 m a second.
The upper front plate is a lot thicker than 38 mm, it does have a 38 mm a hardened armor, But directly behind it it has reinforced plates, so converted to RHA it was about 51 mm.
You could not use a single 38 mm plate because the composites mount using the upper plate and overtime that would warp it.
Also I spook said, Rounds do not slow down and the number one thing that hurts tungsten is the vibration when it ricochets it essentially shakes at a park at the molecular level, so when it actually hits the heart and composite array on the turret it’s more like shooting a blob of tungsten then a hardened dart.
This is different however versus DU. The friendly fire incidents he sites only penetrated because the DU self sharpens. The tungsten would not have killed the gunner. Tungsten is denser but it is not nearly as hardened and keeps its shape exponentially better.
This is the reason the other Allied countries have to Lengthen their guns to keep up with the Americans darts. DU is far superior to anything else. That’s why Du armor work so well vs Tungsten and steel.
I don’t know how this other RUclips or ignored the fact that this plate was laughably thin. It wasn’t even the thickness of the rods tail fin.
I would bet money that it doesn't matter if a Tungsten or DU hits the turret ring.
Also, 3000m/s da Fug? Did I miss something, does the US now use rail guns on their tanks? Because with conventional guns we are now at around 1700m/s for Tungsten and 1500m/s for DU in regular use.
Problem with Du is just, that it can't go much faster than 1500m/s or it will just evaporate in a ball of fire right after it got shot from the barrel.
Tungsten on the other side only gains from higher speeds, because it doesn't really shatter but becomes a mushroom after impact. It's basically just the question of how hard you can hit with a blunt tool.

Next point would be that he said "rounds don't slow down" yes they do, and that quiet considerably. I understand the logic behind his sentence on the other side. Still Tungsten does not just shatter upon impact, the angle is more important here.

Regarding turbines: fuel consumption on a turbine under operational conditions is within spitting distance of a diesel - well within the ability of the American logistical apparatus. For a nation, such as Russia, with minimal and rail-centric logistical capability, a turbine is a poor idea. But the advantages it provides are well worth for the US.

They’ve shorted the US by giving it the oldest tanks when compared to its competition. (Ex: The 2a6 entered service in 2001, and the M1a2 in game is from the early 1980’s.)

The m1a2 model is broken in game. The turret cheek composite has giant gaps so most of the ricochets off the upper plate in game acctually bounce through the bottom of the turret cheeks. You can see this in armor viewer. Additionally the m1s have a really low composite effeciency compared to the leopard 2 for the same thickness, for example the side turret, the abrams has a 0.2 composite effeciency while the leopard has over 0.9. For some reason the leopard has over 4.5 times the armor for the same thickness. This makes penning the abrams side turret at 3/4 aspect very easy while the leopards is essentially impossible. Furthermore the ipm1 has better hull armor than the m1a2 and m1a1. It is pretty well known that the m1a2 has 2nd gen du armor in cheeks and front hull. The fact that it has worse hull armor makes it clear that the 120mm abrams have some fucked models. The abrams also has a gun pivot behind the mantlet which is around 120mm in thickness which is missing from the model.

But how about the "bottom" of the turret? I've actually never thought about the UFP, but instead the bottom of the turret bouncing into the ring itself
As mentioned in the video, most rounds would hit the composite armor arrays when penetrating the bottom of the turret, but APFSDS could theoretically penetrate the bottom of the turret and enter the fighting compartment. It would be a pretty difficult angle to obtain though, and the APFSDS might shatter on contact due to its structural integrity being destroyed.

I remember Nicolas Moran "The Chieftain" talking about a study done on the tank battles of WWII. The study concluded that most tank battles were won by whoever fired first.
Tank Armor and Ammo/Guns are constantly competing to out do the other. People argue over angles, armor values, composites, ammo types, etc., but I think real life tank battles (involving modern tanks with well-trained crews) are mostly gonna come down to however fires first, just like WWII. T-90's aren't gonna be rolling around hitting Abrams left and right at the perfect penetrating angles. And Abrams aren't gonna be doing the same to T-90's either. As long as tank crews load the right ammo types, whoever spots the enemy first and fires first will win 9/10 tank battles.
Great vid as always, and yeah you can just skip trying to shot trap and go for the turret ring or other weak points. Turret ring is easy from the front, shoot to the left just below the cannon

one thing that could actually help with this is a simple bar of steel across the middle of the front plate. anyhing bouncing will have to engage the lip of the bar, which is much deeper than it's tall so it's disproportionately good armour for its size. it will also increase the angle of the bounce to increase the chance the round enters the armour array.

Id like to ask you to make a video about HE overpressure, because i know you already talked about it, but it was a small talk, theres still a lot to discussed, and id also like to ask you to make a video about arty. Because arty buffs plus HE overpressure is a true Gaijin move. Arty hits its targets a lot more, and that leads to 1 click kills, and its so annoying at the start of a match, where everyone spams their arty. As as example, i was killed *7* times in 1 day by arty, even by tanks with armor. One time, i was on that map with the castle... i forgot its name but its ruins of a castle, and i saw that arty was called, so i hid under one of those ruins but the arty still got me, i was on a Pz 3 N, and it hit me right on the drivers hatch. Anyways, would be nice to see a video on those topics, have a good one!

I know it's not the main topic here, but in the RedEffect video that I believe is being referenced, RE comes to a compromise conclusion about the "upper front plate shattering" as shattering older, shorter, steel Soviet rods, but probably not the most modern penetrator rounds. What's the opinion on this?

Even so Spook just made the point that the upper front plate of an Abrams is 38mm not 6mm being shot by a projectile that has a thicker fin than the plate, not to mention the fact he stated in the video that the upper plate was able to deflect and have the turret face catch M829A1 from a friendly Abrams.

I'm still trying to figure out how to remove camouflage branches that WT inadvertently, when I was selecting camo foliage, and instead of putting it where I wanted it, WT put the camo over the gun scope. So when I SHIFT in, all I see is branches, so it's hard to range.

All the people saying it's a big weakness don't take into consideration that Abrams and many other western tanks were designed to fight from a hulldown position foremost, is such position, with the rear of the vehicle being lower that shallow angle of UFP means it gets hidden behind LFP and it's compostie array even if vehicle shows some of its hull.

So,yes, but it functionally doesn't matter, due to the fact that if anything DOES ricochet off, its either dead, shattered, or whatever was fired at it was going to go through no matter what.
Even _IF_ it were a shot trap - Would it _ACTUALLY_ be exploitable? _CAN_ you actually pinpoint a shot like how it is being done in WT / WoT in reallife? I mean sure at 200m distance, like how most of those battles in the games play out, I guess but aren't most of today's Tanks expected to kill their opponents at like 2'000m ranges? _CAN_ you still flick shoot a round into an Abrams Turret Ring or into the lower portion of a Leopard 2A5-7's Wedges? 🤔

Most gunners are trained to shoot center mass on targets, which explains why B-22 and B-66 were struck in that area during Desert Storm. It's not entirely unlikely, but there are a lot of variables to consider.

The math supposedly says the Leopard 2A5 ( and above's ) turret wedges _combined_ with the internal armour is impenetrable to currently produced ammunition by any possible adversaries so unless they aim between the wedges / below the gun ( which everyone apparently does when they play WT / WoT ) and cannot get an easier shot into the spare ammo rack situated besides the driver in the hull the reaction of a German Crew will be nothing more but a: _"Rock, Paper, Scissors - Okay Hans, your turn to check who knocked this time."_
My personal guess though would be that German Tank Drivers, in reallife, would kindly be asked by their Commanders to respect the etiquette and park their vehicles in the designated parking zones marked with a T ( Tank ) for that hull option to remain a wet dream scenario to Russian WT / WoT players only bringing me back to hitting the area between the wedges / under the gun in reallife which if _"trained to shoot center mass"_ is all the precision you can get as a gunner in reallife then yea... Might as well ask your driver to start upping their advance in _reverse_ game while having an unsent Email with the Subject "дерьмо!" to your loved ones at the ready. 😏

Sure, a stray or poorly aimed shot may hit such an area but at a level of tankery where the first shot is / must be a confirmed kill this kind of wishful thinking is kinda... meh?
Actually the DU round that hit Abrams tank B-66 did not penetrate. B-66 was hit by 3 rounds, but none of them penetrated the DU armor panels in the Abrams. The report reads that the gunner was killed by a "turret fire/detonation", clearly not big enough to injure the the loader as well. So while damage was done to the tank, no shell actually ever entered the crew compartment and the rounds were technically stopped.

Yeah, long rods bouncing/deflecting don't make much sense. The shot trap probably shoulndt exist in game. However I would like to add that the neck of an Abrams is still quite a large weak point to hit in the game regardless. Most kills I get on the Abrams are just me firing directly into the neck rather than a shot trap. So I'm not sure if it would make much of a difference regardless.
I main M1A2 at top tier. Getting rid of this shot trap would help immensely. I cannot remember just how many times I have been damaged, disabled, or outright destroyed by rounds bouncing off the UFP into the bottom of the turret or I the turret ring.
I am sometimes even ammo racked by those bounces which is quite annoying as you can imagine.

Hey Spookston, I was wondering if I could ask for advice about IFVs for a concept video game set in 90s West Africa:
If the primary focus of the game is infantry combat, an IFV would need limited firepower to be balanced. The Ratel “commander” variant was my primary choice because it only has a M2 .50 for its primary armament, but what would be the best Soviet counterpart? (The BRDM-2 for example has a KPV 14.7, but is too small compared to the Ratel, lacking troop transport, while the BMP has troop transport, but has a 2A28 Grom 73mm for its main armament). Is there a more appropriate IFV for the setting?

3:00 I cant tell you how many times ive been killed through the composite armor plates, the shot bounces off my UFP and hits the tank where there is clearly armor and it pens through the armor and shatters inside the tank, didn't hit my turret ring or anything just went in through the bottom of turret

They could have so easily put rises in the material like the BMP-1 has on its ufp to break water and bullets skipping up the glacis [and also like the The T-64 family has in front of the driver slot] so it can force a torque moment and have shells rotate up instead of going into cookie monster's mouth. Shots would have to be A LOT more precise to get that hit barring mantle update as well.
Leopard is the most screwed on a bounce-down of magnitude since they have not updated that frontal rack at all besides putting an extra plate over the top.

They are all even longer so the problem is even worse for them, the longer the rod is the more the problem is accentuated because they would only bounce at nearly 90 degrees

why dont they just make the ufp thicker or applique armor? wouldnt that increase survivability and cant they use some sort of a shield for the turret ring even if its relatively thin itd help i feel like i dont really know all that much about tank armor especially mbts but i feel like it should be feasible

Yes, but it’s oversimplified, velocity, mass, opposing mass, impact angle, thickness and such will matter, and this is not counting the ridiculous numbers of obscure variations.

DM63 120mm can pen 800mm of Rha at 10mt ^^ what can stop them?
My main concern with the Abram shot trap was with other munitions, particularly APHE and full caliber shells/rockets ricocheting off the front plate and into the turret ring. Obviously these may not fully make it through, but a 100mm APHE would probably jam the turret ring on any vehicle.
it's just that compared to other designs (particularly Soviet and Russian ones) have the turret ring set far enough behind the point where the roof and front plate meet to prevent this from happening. (and obviously with a larger explosive like ATGMs, this now introduces a roof perforation, but I guess with APHE and some HEAT shells my point could still stand.)
APHE largely went out of favor, HESH, HEAT and ATGMs could happen.
I have not seen MBTs used full caliber munition in a long time, but I do guess its not impossible for some older tank to successfully exploit the shot trap.

This exact video and conclusion is what I kept telling people. But some were dead set on 'the other youtubers' data, which were just not fully explained.
APFSDS either shatters or loses enough penetration power to not be able to pen anything else. Next to that, IF the round manages to survive and retrain a lot of power from the first ricochet, it faces ANOTHER steep angle that is heavily armored and also impossible to penetrate.
So yes, War Thunder gets it wrong. Not sure if I should say that anymore...
Same goes for the Leopard 2 ricochet, but thats a given.

So it's possible or likely that some versions of APFSDS will shatter and lose cohesion before being directed into the shot trap. But this is still a shot trap by definition as APHE and HEAT and more durable APFSDS, all shells really, are still directed to a weak spot. It doesn't matter if the shot can't penetrate it, this is by definition a shot trap. And other ammunitions exist. So yes, it's a shot trpa.
Why not put chains in the turret ring area so that weakspot could be nullified even further to where only APFSDS could hit that part

For those of us still playing at Rank 2 can someone please tell me if/how/when you would see that nuke in the game ? Is it an in game asset, an AI event or simply a cut scene ?
6.7+ for nukes
At 6.7 and above there will be an option to spawn a nuclear capable bomber for 3000 sp in RB (There is one for AB too but I don't know anything about it). Once you have attained 3000 sp you have to manually fly the bomber over the battle zone and drop it anywhere in there. A successful drop will instantly end the game and your team will win.
Technically 6.7. But ive had the bomber in my lineup from 5.7 up if i get uptiered to 6.7.
I'm an engineer not a metallurgy engineer mind you but a b.e. none the less. One thing we all learn is that matter behaves in strange ways at high speed. Also I think that fuel tanks are wildly misrepresented in game. Modern fuel tanks should 1. frontal tanks not be set on fire from being hit 2. they should function as very thick armor. A full fuel tank (which the front tanks should be) will not burn when hit, they are well above the upper explosive limit for any fuel. Even the leakage caused by a couple hits in game shouldn't cause a fire. Liquids are extremely good armor as they will slow down a projectile massively when they have nowhere to displace to. That is the reason that they are in the front to begin with. This would improve the performance of both the M1s and most Soviet tanks.
