I tried it I know I won't regret it! The advice made sense thanks for making it (and especially thank you for making it free bc I definitely can't spend my budget on anything that isn't supplies or packaging/shipping lol)
Thank you, Mei! I will check this feature on my Shopify account immediately. I'm so appreciative when business owners share their learning experiences. The spirit of generosity amongst entrepreneurs is one of the most gratifying parts of owning a business 💕
Hi Joan! Thank you for watching. This was the very reason I started Creative Hive. I wanted to share with others my experiences - both good and bad, so we can all learn from each other! Appreciate you being here :)
@@CreativeHiveCo Since it's happened to others, then you were not alone in learning these lessons the hard way. Plus when 70% paid, it really took the sting out of it too. I think that's what's making me hesitate from moving from Etsy. I'm Canadian selling digital items, and Etsy handles all the remitting of taxes on my behalf. The learning curve of dealing with all that is my main obstacle.
@@PaperZenCeceliaLouie I think you're right to hesitate moving from Etsy! They really do take care of a lot of things for you. If you sell on Amazon, they handle customer service for you. For some business owners, they don't like that. For me, I invite that, haha! There is certainly value in Etsy, Amazon, etc. and many disadvanatges with being on your own platform. But there's always two sides to the coin we need to weigh against each other! On the other side of it, while this was a costly mistake, this is also the platform where I make 97.5% of all my sales. Etsy only accounts for 2%. Amazon is 0.5%. Of course, you get back what you put in :)
Unfortunately, this is the #1 reason, I’ve been so afraid to step out and try. I’m terrified of making a costly mistake. I keep researching thinking I can learn enough so I can be prepared but ultimately end up frozen and not doing anything🤦🏾♀️. I’m so sorry that happened to you but grateful for the share. You’ve come so far since then!! Happy New Year to you🎉🍾
Your fear is legitimate, Tracey! I get like that too, paralyzed from doing something. I resisted doing RUclips videos for years! I find what helps me get past is people supporting me, encouraging me, holding me accountable. Sometimes time just passes and your perspective changes and are more open and comfortable to trying the things that used to scare us. One day it might be the right time for you to try Shopify, but it doesn't have to be now 🤗
Making costly mistakes is the only way to learn and grow. Unfortunately that's life. The real secret {my uncle taught me that} is to never make major or huge mistakes that are going to crush your life or your relations with people. In business you never know if something is going to work or not. Yes, it might have been perfect just 5 minutes ago and now the same thing is gone. You never know. I worked as a trader for a year. And in the beginning it was hard because of the mental anxiety and stress you experience during the trading process. I hoped that with time it would be less stressful and I would get used to it. I never did. But I got to know that it was supposed to be that way so I accepted it and at times I actually enjoyed it. But you have to go a long way till you reach that level. Still those that are supposed to become good traders will pass that test easily. :)))
On Etsy you are allowed to put on your shop that you won’t ship any orders until payment is received. So I would say do that just double check you receive the payment from those orders or order before you make and ship anything out.
I feel terrible for you over the mistake, but I cannot thank you enough for sharing it because I have been researching starting my own digital downloads shop and I'm absolutely terrified of making mistakes. And I know it's part of learning, but I'm hoping everything I am learning will help me push past those fears and just START. Thank you, Mei. Truly.
Hi Julie, the one good thing about mistakes is that you can help prevent them for others! And it's ok to make mistakes as you grow and learn (just try to avoid any of the ones I made lol).
Thank you so much! Someone had helped me set up my Shopify Store and after hearing this I checked it and it was set to manual. You saved me!! I am looking forward to the time when I am able to have an expert go over my store. I really enjoy your videos.
By the way, your solution was brilliant AND I loved the stages of grief thread, I completely understand how heartbreaking that loss would be. I was inspired to hear how many of your customers did the right thing but it was ultimately HOW YOU HANDLED this difficukt, embarrassing, and devastating financial loss that I believe made the outcome so successful. Thank you so much for this advice! As someone who's working on building an online shop I had no idea this could be an issue. You saved me a massive head and stress with this information.
Many people don't bother to reconcile their credit card statement or their bank statement. They pay the credit card bill & check to make sure they have a positive balance in their Bank then throw away the paperwork. Thank you, thank you! I'm setting up my Shopify store now and I remember seeing it and not sure what it was and I'm pretty sure I chose manual!! Yikes! Now I need to figure out how to change it!
This post tells you how to turn ON manual capture, but you can follow the steps to the place you need to go. help.shopify.com/en/manual/orders/get-paid Just don't turn them on! 😂😜😉
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this cautionary tale to save all of us from that hard, disheartening lesson ourselves. As always great, important information.
Thank you for sharing your experience on this with us! I saw this function when I was setting up my Shopify shop. It reminded me of all those years I sold my handmade soaps online. For years I manually processed customers' credit cards.
That is Terrifying ! I am starting a store this week and I am Subscribed ! I am heading over to check for that right NOW.. I would have thought most people would have chosen to not pay. I am happy that was not the case. Great Video.
Hi Mei. I totally understand that's late for you now but I would like to answer your question about "why the manual payment is an option" . As a software developer I would like to share a tip. So many platform that makers use to set up their own website, has this settings and it's used mostly for test purpose. Did you remember when you set up your own website for the first time? I'm pretty sure you tested all the sell workflow: insert a fake order and checked out using this "manual payment" settings to simulate the purchase without charge your real credit card ;) Hope this could be of any help for people in your community. Have a good one! ;) Laura
Why don't they put these explanations right in the page? "This is for testing". Don't assume everyone knows what it means--- especially if you dont have great customer service by phone.
woah! I felt your pain girl. Thanks for the info though, am actually glad I learned about this because I would need manual capture for my type of business actually. I had no idea it had a name :D
I am just beginning to decide on which route to take for my handmade soaps - your videos are very educational and I am learning so much - this story was a very good learning experience and I am so thankful you shared it both sides of this story - once again thank you for all of your videos 💕💖💕
Thanks for sharing. Your NOT a failure.... you got back up & obviously succeeding. Kudos to you. Yes, there is still good & moral people out there. Continued success.
1) Excellent tip. My sister showed me this video while I was building my website so I made sure it was set to Automatic Capture. 2) As a customer, I've had sellers resend me a product that was lost in the mail (they didn't have to because the loss in shipping wasn't their fault, but they did). If I miraculously end up with both packages (the original shipment and the subsequent replacement), I always message them to ask how I can pay for the 2nd package. With big small businesses, every cent matters and it wouldn't sit well in my conscience not to do the right thing. Thanks for your tips!
You sound like an amazing customer, SL! Small business really appreciate these positive interactions, and you're right - every cent does matter. I'm glad you were able to make this change on your site!
Tks so much for sharing this story. I totally get what u mean about hyperventilating. STRESS! So much unforeseen happens with starting a biz. Take care.
Sorry this happened to you! The only option I have on my Shopify is PayPal and I took months setting up my website. I have always been a person who pays attention to every last detail! Your products are awesome by the way!

I like the sound of starting with Shopify and realize that I may not make much in profit for a beginner. I am a self taught/learner potter. My son will be helping me with the technical part of the business like handling the Store online etc. I look forward to learning more from other videos that you have made and are continuing to make. You have given some great advice that I am sure will save me a lot of time and money. Take care in this trying time and be well. B
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with all of us. I definitely learned from your experience though your video. I truly appreciate your honest way of speaking and your professionalism. You have great content and they're extremely useful as well! I'm trying to open my own small shop online and I've been binge watching your videos as research. I'm so glad that I found your channel! Excellent video amen. I just discovered you today & subscribed. Enjoying your topics very much. I'm re-entering the reselling and handmade market after a long hiatus. Will definitely watch and learn more! Thanks, James

Hi Mei, You are very much appreciated for your honesty! Thank you. Myself, being in the process of planning my steps for an online shop, to tell you the truth, I'm in doubt whether or not, to trust Shopify as I read many people's comments in the social media saying that they are scammers. This discourages me of joining this kind of platform. I will appreciate to have your opinion.
Hi, the reason for this option, manual capture is for high or medium risk orders. I have used the manual capture option in the past for Shopify payments bc there were fraudulent orders and I didn’t want that. I also enabled PayPal protection it’s a flat % per order. I also made sure I had different payment options like PayPal active. Hope this helps
(1) If there's a 7 day window, you could have manually captured the final week of the month in question. (And your student's "few days" could have been entirely manually captured.) (2) My own instinct would have been to give these customers some incentive: maybe a perentage off coupon on their next order, IF they pay up on the past one. I wonder what are your thoughts on this?
As for offering incentives, I think that could be an effective strategy to encourage customers to complete their orders. A percentage-off coupon could motivate them to return while also fostering goodwill. I appreciate your thoughts on this; it’s always helpful to consider different approaches to engage customers!
Ommmggg... I worked at a hotel and we also had to make a guarantee (capture) on everybody's credit card so the money was sort of blocked already for us. When you told the stuff about the manual thing I was like noooooooooooooo. I totally understand the feeling you had/have just above your belly. Hopefully you went through the trauma already as it's more than 1 year ago now. I am going to check my settings right away. I don't honestly even get why Shopify has this possibility. I can't imagine a business model which would need that option. xD
It's so frustrating, isn't it? I feel so fortunate that I caught it as quickly as I did, and at least this mistake has now helped others not do the same.

I love all the information that you give because I am not a techy person and I think this helps people that are not and are. So thank you again for all your information.
Thank you for your comment, Dina! It was super hard to admit at first but I knew that if I shared I might be able to stop it happening to someone else.
I think a huge factor is the customer base. People who shop small business in general a) have more money b) more kind and understanding people c) more educated. Most people who are shopping at walmart (I shop at walmart so it not all but most) just want cheap prices. They aren't kind, understanding, or very educated. They usually want the cheapest item, no matter the cost. Buying $1 towel that won't last for more then a few months than invest in expensive towels that last a few years. Hence, if Walmart forgot to charge them, they won't care to go back and pay for it. However, people who usually shop small business know it more expensive, more of an investment, but it worth it (more environmental, less slave labor etc whatever the cost) and willing to pay it. So these people are willing to go back and pay even if they aren;t charge compare to walmart shopper. That just my guess why your customer pay you back and I am so happy for you.
Thank you so much for sharing this, and especially the solution that allowed you to recoup most of the money! Just a heads up though, the stages of grief actually don't apply to grieving other people or sad events. That type of grief doesn't have neatly compartmentalized steps and everyone processes them differently. The stages refer to a study of terminally ill people who were in the process of accepting their own death. 👍
Thanks for sharing. :) The manual thing is probably mostly for EU based shops. It's illegal to charge a card in the European Union before your order is shipped.
I heard that the manual option is there to protect sellers from fraudulent purchases? You can then decide whether to manually capture the payment or not. Not a good idea if you make a lot of sales though.
Most people use the manual capture so they can process the order then charge the card at the time of shipping. Kind of like how Amazon lets you pre-order books but they don't charge your card until they ship it to you.
I can imagine how much that would have sucked when you realised your mistake. But great job in recovering most of the payments. I doubt everyone actually read the email you sent out so the number of people comfortable with not paying is probably even lower 👍
Thank you for sharing. I was wondering do you have a separate bank account for your business? I know I will make mistakes but starting out I want to make less mistakes. How do will collect payment from my business?
Yes, I do and I always have. I've wanted to keep my business separate from personal finances. It makes bookkeeping much easier. The way you collect payments will depend on the platforms you use but pretty much everything can be connected to your bank account for you to transfer money to.

I'm pretty sure you tested all the sell workflow: insert a fake order and checked out using this "manual payment" settings to simulate the purchase without charge your real credit card ;)
Hope this could be of any help for people in your community.
Have a good one! ;)
Laura
Thank you for sharing your expertise, Laura! I'm sure that this happens quite often when people are testing their sites. It makes total sense!
I'm so glad that it was helpful to you, Farida! Thanks so much for watching!
I am just beginning to decide on which route to take for my handmade soaps - your videos are very educational and I am learning so much - this story was a very good learning experience and I am so thankful you shared it both sides of this story - once again thank you for all of your videos 💕💖💕

Yes, not my most favorite event in business, but I'm happy that it's helped other people from having it happen to them.
I’m sorry you had to go through this, but thank you for sharing! I had no idea this was a thing!
I know, it's crazy! While it's not my best moment, I'm happy that I can help others from having it happen to them!

Thank you, Mareka! I hope that they helped make an impact!
I smiled from beginning to end listening to her. Thank you so much for sharing young lady.
Thank you, AM! That made my day to read that!
@@CreativeHiveCo You are most welcome and thank you for sharing your very detailed, yet, easy to understand information. Brilliant !
Take care.
Thanks for watching, Chris! I hope that this story helps keep it from happening to someone else!
Sorry this happened to you! The only option I have on my Shopify is PayPal and I took months setting up my website. I have always been a person who pays attention to every last detail! Your products are awesome by the way!
Thanks, Cici! I honestly don't know what happened with it or how it came to be set that way but I'm glad I figured it out when I did!
Thank you for sharing your mistake. I am in the process of starting a business selling online. I make ceramic functional ware.

Aw, thank you!!! So sweet of you to stop by my channel and take the time to say that. I appreciate you!
Overall, I love Shopify and I wouldn't use any other platform for my businesses. They are very helpful and their customer service is awesome.
Thank you so much for sharing this story!! I really appreciate you that you decided to tell your experiences and knowledges. Your new subscriber ;)
I really want to help others NOT have this happen to them too! Thank you for subscribing! 💖
Yes, and this is good for people to know, but I think for most small handmade businesses, there is less of a chance of a fraudulent order.
Incredible and valuable story. thx for having the guts to share it.
Thanks for watching, Leigh! I really want to help people not make this same mistake!
This is a great and very teachable story. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching it, Roxana. I really hope it helps someone else not make the same mistake.
Your channel is so good. Thank you!
Thank you so much! That makes me so happy to hear!
Such a valuable video!!!! You are wonderful for sharing this mistake, it could happen to anybody.
Thank you, Mila! I really hope it helps people avoid the same fate!
am currently building my shopify shop so this was a very helpful video for me. Many thanks
That's awesome! Good luck on your website launch!! ❤️
Super Info Mei...thanks for the Headsup
I hope it helps you out, Deepinder!
@@CreativeHiveCo Definitely, and how well thought of you to make the video message. 70% .. that's an insane amount of good and well willing people. Those people are YOUR buyers! Heart warming. And you're definitely a very creative solution thinker. Haha, sorry I'm not an English native speaker but you get what I mean right, have a great day and stay safe! And hard working, mwehehe.
ooooooh boy, definitely adding "make sure i'm actually getting paid" to the top of my to do list XD yikes! thanks for sharing this
Yes, it's kind of an important part of business! 🤦♀️😂
Big thumb up for sharing your mistake you are a brave and smart women. Great respect to you.
Thank you so much, Pravit! I appreciate that!
How can they not pay that sweet face and beautiful and talented person. You are simply amazing! WOuld love to have 1 hour of your services of a new business. Love and peace
Some people realized that got a really great bargain, I guess! 😂 I'm at least glad I caught it and was able to fix it.
Thank you very much for this information I know it was embarrassing but hey I’m sure there’s more than just you and that other lady went through this. I love all the information that you give because I am not a techy person and I think this helps people that are not and are. So thank you again for all your information.
Thank you for your comment, Dina! It was super hard to admit at first but I knew that if I shared I might be able to stop it happening to someone else.
Thank you so much for this information I would have never known. I’m so happy I ran across your video.
I'm happy you found me too! Thank you for watching!
Omg I am missing about 1k from a month and I can’t figure it out where it went !!
😲 oh no! I hope there is a good reason for it and not what I talked about in my video! 😕
Hi Bobby, it's true identifying the habits of your buyer is an important aspect!
Thank you for your feedback!
Thanks for sharing. :)
The manual thing is probably mostly for EU based shops. It's illegal to charge a card in the European Union before your order is shipped.
That is so good to know! Thank you for sharing that!
Thank you, so very much for sharing this experience/education with us!!
My pleasure, Connie! I really hope that it's helped other people not have the same thing happen!
Love your generous information!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you for sharing! Who knew??? Wow!
Ha! I don't even know how it got turned off! Oops! Thanks for watching Katrina! Are you on Shopify?
Creative Hive no, don’t even sell online yet. Market place only for now.
Thanks so much for sharing your tips! This was very helpful and I appreciate it
Thank you for watching!
Way to be proactive. . Good job!
Thank you, Tina!
Thank you so much I’m going to be aware before I start my website
Thank you so much Carina! Good luck in building your website! ❤️❤️
Truly a blessing.
🙏🙏
Me rushing to check to my store! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for watching!!!
Thanks for the information about payment, 😮wow 👏👏👍👍👍❤
You're most welcome!! Thank you so much for watching!! ❤️
I can imagine how much that would have sucked when you realised your mistake. But great job in recovering most of the payments. I doubt everyone actually read the email you sent out so the number of people comfortable with not paying is probably even lower 👍
That's true, John - they may have thought my email was a sale or something and didn't open it. I like that perspective. 😊
Question does Shopify take money from your commissions you make? I’m trying to decide between Shopify and Wix.
If you use Shopify payments, there is no transaction fee. If you use external payment processors then there may be a fee. www.shopify.com/pricing
Wow! So glad you were able to get some money back!
Me too!! And I'm so glad I caught it when I did!
Thank You! This was gr8 information!
